Swimming has ruined my hair :(

I used to have lovely shiney hair but now its really dry and frizzy. Its horrible!

I take the girls to swimming lessons every week where im in the pool with them. Ive noticed a difference in my hair since then so guessing its the clorine in the water.

Anyone have any ideas to bring back its shine and glory! I have long hair right down my back which looks lovely when its healthy but just a big mess at the mo.
Any other swimmers have any tips?

Grow it out and start again?

Swim cap? I need one, we swim a lot!

I used an Aveda shampoo when I swam a lot and it worked really well. I forget the name but it was designed for swimmers.

I feel your pain!

Best thing (BEST thing) is pure coconut oil (cheapest here ) and drench your hair on the oil (it turns to liquid when warmed in your palms). Twist into a top-knot right on top of your head and leave overnight.

Washes out with normal shampoo, then condition as normal.

Do this every night for a week, then twice a week as maintenance. I've got the longest hair I've ever had using this method - and coconut oil doesn't stain cotton or silk pillowcases.

Oh ill try that Pinot. Think ive still got some from coconut oil left over from when I did a baby massage course with DD1. Although that was a while ago!- does it have a shelf life?

Will look for the Aveda shampoo too. I did try a swimming one once ( cant remember which brand) and it didnt seem to do much.

Thanks

Tresseme do a keratin repair cream that u use after ur shampoo conitioner and leave for 5 mins. It really helped my trashed from swimming hair.

Also once u shampoo and condition you could rinse and condition again. And use a hear protection cream not spray before u blow dry. All this on the advice of my hair dresser and my hair is back to being lovely!

I don't think it has a shelf-life - if you were to eat it maybe, but to slap on your hair, you'll be alright! Honestly, it's brilliant. But do do it regularly - as much as you can, until your hair comes back from the brink, then upkeep.

Moroccanoil would be a good bet for your hair as well - I love that stuff. Makes hair all swishy.

I use VO5 hot oil shower works moisture soak. It says that it removes 75% more chlorine than shampoo. You just put on in the shower no need to heat it.

stargirl1701 · 25/08/2012 17:16

I swim everyday. I put a protective coating of conditioner on my hair before I go into the pool. It's Boots own brand and made specifically to combat the chlorine. It does make a difference but wears off after about 30 minutes.

I'd rather be fit with crap hair Grin

PlumSykes · 25/08/2012 17:51

Before you swim, soak your hair in the shower, so it's totally sodden. Your hair won't be able to absorb much pool water if it's already drenched with fresh tap water.

pigleychez · 25/08/2012 18:16

Stargirl- Sadly the swimming is just an hour of me swishing the girls about in their lessons (30mins each) so not hardly any 'actual' swimming for me!

Will check out everyones suggestions :)

One of the few tips I've ever taken up from the various women's mags I work on: put a heavy-duty hair mask on under your swimming cap before going in. I swim 3 times a week.

ThisOnce · 25/08/2012 21:53

It's probably the swimming, but, you might want to think about having your thyroid tested. My hair turned to straw before I was treated for hypothyroidism.

I am surprised no one has recommended this already as it is a WONDER product... Philip Kingsley Elasticizer. I have bleached blonde highlights and my hair was often dry and lacklustre before using it but now I use it once a week and it is bouncy and amazing. Based on how fantastic this product is, I imagine his swim cap product might be worth investigating. HTH
