Ugh! Polyester everything especially blouses/tops

What is it with polyester at the moment? I want a top with buttons. Everything is polyester. EVERYTHING! The static!

Now, I teach textile science, the only good things about it, are it is cheap and easycare. I hate it. I know there is lots of sheer stuff around at the moment, but you can have sheer cotton.

HandM, Zara, Next, all are full of it. Or viscose which just looks tacky and cheap. Are natural fibres ever going to be used again?

Funny, I just bought loads of tops at H&M and marvelled at them all being cotton or even pima cotton (not blouses though). Had a lovely haul!

My advice is to buy Toast and Whitecompany in the sale (no polyester in sight), or even Massimo Dutti. Zara and Mango can be good too, if you browse.

Watching this thread. I hate polyester - so sweaty and I have such sensitive skin. Decent quality viscose in a blend can be nice (but most viscose most definitely is not) and i love tencel because it drapes so nicely and it's stil nice and cool like cotton, but there's so much crap in the shops.

spanishring · 23/08/2012 11:56

So what is tencel?

I find some viscose ok and some sweaty.
I like it for thin blouses but I have some thicker dresses from Cos which hang nicely but are sooo sweaty.

Viscose has many guises! But I absolutely hate acrylic and have no idea why you'd put your child in it. Or why people say it washes better. It doesn't. It goes all crunchy!

orangeandlemons · 23/08/2012 12:01

Tencel: I similar to viscose as it is made from wood pulp, but it is treated with differnt chemicals which can be recycled as part of the manufacturing process, so therefore it is an environmentally friendly fibre. It is often given a denim appearance but can be used for anything. It was invented in the 80's in conuction with M and S I think and can be manufactured as a microfibre (I think) Smile

Next question?

Viscose, rayon and acetate are all made the same way so will all make you sweaty.

Crunchyness of acrylic can be stopped by using fabric conditioner but I hate the stuff

viscose and rayon do not make you sweaty.

Acetate and Polyester do (and Acrylic) and are 100% nasty and sweaty.

Viscose= Rayon, which is made from chemically treated wood pulp (oddly), it is like poor man's silk. A step up from Acetate, Polyester and Acrylic though, as it is breathable.

daisydoodoo · 23/08/2012 12:15

yes school uniforms- why no cotton other than polos or shirts. Every skirt or pair of trousers are made from manmade fibres, even in stores like john lewis. Im on a mission to buy only natural materials as 3 of my 4 dc have sensitive skin and only cotton or wool don;t aggravate them.

orangeandlemons · 23/08/2012 12:48

Viscose makes me sweaty. I know it's breathable but it makes me sweat and cotton doesn't

Yes, school jumpers too. DD's proper school ones have acrylic and polyester in I think as well as cotton. Yuk

Lovewearingjeans river island to lovely soft cotton boys hoodies

ToastedTeacakes · 23/08/2012 13:35

Topshop is the worst for overpriced polyester and acrylic, like £50 for a shapeless plastic cardi. At least 'cheaper' stores present it in a more realistic fashion (price-wise), regardless the implication of sweatshops, etc. Trouble is, Topshop (and especially that Phil Green dude who owns the empire) make no attempts to hide their disregard for fair trade, either, so this makes the prices seem even more repugnant.

orangeandlemons · 23/08/2012 13:42

It's the overpricing that gets me. I expect polyester in Primark because it's cheap. I tried on a blouse the other day in a Coast. £70 for polyester.

Well whilst we are here - I hate any kind of polyester in pants and it's impossible to find just cotton pants that aren't vile.
I got some silk pants from patra but the design was awful.

NoComet · 23/08/2012 16:48

PLEASE DON'T BUY IT!

We've been here before.

If we refuse to buy the horrible plastic tat and honestly we can all manage without new clothes, we just like buying them. They do eventually get the message and cotton will reappear in a year or two.

PretzelTime · 23/08/2012 17:00

Isn't there a shortage of cotton at the moment. But viscose, tencel, silk, hemp, linen etc...could be used instead, all more pleasant than polyester. Agree that we shouldn't buy it, that's how they shops will be forced to change.

orangeandlemons · 23/08/2012 17:32

But teenagers will always buy it! ButCoast!Shock
