dress for my body shape

AGilchrist · 19/08/2012 21:18

Hi
I have recently lost quite a bit of weight. I am now a size 16. Smallish waist, d cup boobs and a huge ample backside. Along with a post child less that taught tummy.
my sip is getting married in 4 weeks. Its been so long since I have worn a dress I have no idea what style will suit.
I would really like to wear a dress.
Has anyone any idea what style dress would suit and flatter my figure.
Thanks

I am a similar shape and swear by wrap over dresses. Just for one from la redoute for about £40 which I'm very pleased with. Also try hobbs and jaeger sales, and ASOS

I have never thought of a wrap around dress. do they cover the dreaded tummy?

Wrap dresses make me feel horribly tummy conscious.

I like the H&R dress, fantastic print. the bottom of the skirt annoyed me a bit but I think it's fine for bridesmaiding. I wonder if it might look a bit teenage worn as a human dress IYSWIM.

similar print with cap sleeves (photographed without petticoat)

MrsLettuce · 21/08/2012 20:10

Ah, right. I still had a tab open with the H&R dress in and I've just been looking at it again. If you look at the back shot the cotton looks very thin indeed. What I thought was the dafy netting frill is, of course, a cheapy petticoat sticking way too far out the at the hem. I'm not sure if they've done it as styling or if the dress is cut to sit too high on the petticoat. I think it's short thaough, the proportions look right with the extra length og the underskirt added on.

If it is a shorter cut that's a real shame - would completely spoil it, especially on someone of your height. It'd be fine for the day even if it is short but you couldn't really get any wear out of after. If it's right it be lovely worn as a summer day dress without the petticoat, but if not the shorter cut and high waist would make you look like you we wearing a petite cut dress. You'd have to see it as a true bridesmaids dress - worn once, shoved in the wardrobe and forgotten about.

This black and white rose print job from DP looks like better quality and it might even take a petticoat.

I thought I'd linked to Vivien of Holloway before but I hadn't. Teh black and white polka dot halter neck might fit the bill. You'd get a lot more wear out of this than the H&R dress and it's more special than that or the DP one. 'tis adult and better quality.

This OTOH isn't even vaguely vintage looking but it's very elegant. Would need good spanx.

So after much back and forth I (sil and I) have decided on the Bobbi lee ivory.
I just need to decide on nail colour and hat. Thank you.

ThisTooShallPass · 24/08/2012 13:55

Which one was that?

MrsLettuce · 24/08/2012 14:09

Do you mean this one? It's very pretty. I've got a couple of their dresses and the quality is fine.

Are you want to play up or play down the 50's ness?

chickenwingsmmmm · 24/08/2012 16:50

Yes that's the one. I am not sure whether to go for a ivory or white petty coat?
I think I fancy playing up the 50's style
Forgot to mention I have NC.

chickenwingsmmmm · 24/08/2012 17:17

I was a little worried about the quality of the black and white one.

Vaginald · 24/08/2012 17:20

I'm having such fun following these dress links mrs lettuce! & mentally buying them all lol!x sadly can't afford to buy any clothes in RL

MrsLettuce · 24/08/2012 17:27

I'd say either white or pale pink for th e petticoat, it depends what you're doing for bag, shoes, cover up and hat...

Too simple?
probably too quirky, would be fab though
simple cream again

A very pale pink or very pale blue pashmina would work a treat. For nails pin up red is unbeatable IMHO.

chickenwingsmmmm · 24/08/2012 17:37

I was think red for my nails. I love those hats. They are Fab.
I have ordered the dress. You are a woman of amazing style.

MrsLettuce · 24/08/2012 17:38

fuchsia
blue

One of the cream ones or the bird would be best, I think

MrsLettuce · 24/08/2012 17:39

x posts

Blush thank you!

MrsLettuce · 24/08/2012 17:46

shoes? Only if you have tiny feet
these are perfect but wide fit

MrsLettuce · 24/08/2012 18:02

Pink or maybe blue Wow
presumably much too high
too muted?
nude ----

(this is my favourite of the hell bunny floral dresses, really quite autentic too which doesn't happen often with them. Not sure if I like it best in the blue or black version.)

chickenwingsmmmm · 24/08/2012 18:57

Mrslettuce that was may favourite.
Dh thought I wouldn't like it when it came. As I am a jeans and plain t-shirt type he thought I might feel a bit out of my comfort zone.
And I do agree, not exactly happy with my body. I don't know if i am brave enough. Bit i adore it.

MrsLettuce · 24/08/2012 19:00

Lol! there was me thinking you were brave going for a pale colour and cutsy print Smile

ANything like with teh shoes, or are you sorted already?

chickenwingsmmmm · 24/08/2012 19:03

I can't get the pink or blue thread to work. I adore the massive ones but I will fall over. I quite like the nude ones.
I am so confused now. I might order that one and try them on to decide. I love the belt. I think that might make my waist look a little more structured.

MrsLettuce · 24/08/2012 19:47

If you're happy to return things then yes, do order the may day dress to try. I like the cutsy cream one but it could look fussy on, TBH it needs a belt too - is pretty much compulsory on a 50's dress.

I suspect the may day would be more flattering on most women. It's more adult and you can easily go understated with the accessories, say black peep toes along the line of these, black bag along the lines of this, this cardy in sea green, fab, quirky hat to pick out the detail in the dress. Something along those lines.

pink / blue shoe link

And, NO you can't put a cardy with the cream dress, it'd make you look like a 5 year old. It really does need a pashmina

chickenwingsmmmm · 24/08/2012 20:21

Lol. Dh said what about a carry, I howled laughing.
I was considering getting a belt for the cream one.
I am going to Florida in Jan and the mayday will look fab. We have a day out, when we go that is high end window shopping and posh lunch. It will look great for that as well.
Just going to go through your mew links. :)

chickenwingsmmmm · 24/08/2012 20:22

Dh said 'what about a cardy'

chickenwingsmmmm · 24/08/2012 20:29

The bird is lovely but not a good idea. Mil has a actual bird phobia. As mils go she is great so wouldn't want to upset her.
If I get a pashmina for the may day, what colour and what colour hat?

MrsLettuce · 24/08/2012 21:12

these, this and this with a white pashmina would be phenomenal with the may day.

If you want more sedate black shoes and bag +/- as before, <a class="break-all" href="//hwww.houseoffraser.co.uk/Linea+Sequin+with+net+pill+box/163714986,default,pd.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this and a match the pashmina to the hot pink or deeper green in the dress.
