So what age should a woman cut her hair short?

Hello to all you stylish Mumsnetters. Smile

I would appreciate you advice on whether a 35 year old woman should have long hair (a few inches past shoulder length).

I love having long thick hair and it is in great condition, even my hairdresser says she is jealous. Grin She thinks I should keep it long, but I have noticed that most women get to 'a certain age' and suddenly decide to have their hair much shorter. Is this obligatory or something? Confused

I don't feel ready to cut off most of my hair, it is like a lion's mane only straight and black. Grin I'm just wondering if having long hair at my age is not the done thing.

I've had a crop for years but have just grew it, its chin length atm, but Im going for shoulder length. I'm 43.

I was thinking of starting a thread like this today but I am 44.

I have a shoulder length bob in a side parting and am looking at a layered, very short bob. I've been cutting and pasting styles to show my hairdresser.

My hair has definitely changed as I have got older. I could once wash and leave it and it would look sleek and shiney. It's now gone a bit wirey and needs straightening regularly.

OH gosh, please don't succumb to the 'mummy' cut ( as someone else put it!) just because you think at your age (which, incidentally, I think is young!) you should have short hair.

I knew the most gorgeous gorgeous girl, who was an absolute stunner. Beautiful, glossy, long hair which she curled and she was so pretty. She turned 40...and chopped it all off into this awful mumsy cut. Not a Frankie cut. An awful, adding 40 yrs to her, cut. I wish I could post her before and after photos but it would out me! Absolutely everyone I showed the post photo to went 'whooahhh, what the hell did she do that for!'

If you have a pretty little pixie face, with small ears, and would rock a short do, then do it. Otherwise, for god's sake, you're 35 not 85!!!! Think Jennifer Aniston, think Fergie from BEP - YOU ARE NOT OLD!!!!!!!

I am in my 50s and have long hair about halfway down my back. It is straight and very thick however so l recently had some layers cut into it to make it look a bit more modern and more movement and less like a lifeless sod on my head and same style since school

Can someone clarify what a mummy cut is exactly?

51 and it's still shoulder length. I fancy a shorter blonde bob. x

I recently went from long, under bra strap to shoulder length, I am 36

I have always had long hair and until dc3 4 years ago it was thick and shiny and very good condition. Since then, and dc4 it has gone ratty so I finally took the plunge abd had about 6 inches cut off. It looks better and suits me better. I still would prefer longer hair.

I also know what you mean about it seeming to be the done thing to cut your hair short by a certain age. Lots of my friends had short hair by their 30's

I'm 43 and my hair is now below my shoulders - I have a great hairdresser who cuts life and bounce into it - otherwise I know it would look drab and aging...but right now, I'm loving my long hair and look at photos of me from a few years ago with short hair and I looked old, frumpy and distinctly mannish Shock

I just turned 36 and have beautiful thick silky hair a good few inches past my shoulders.

When I turned 30 I cut my longer than elbow length hair into an ear length bob. The novelty lasted a couple of months.

As long as it it looks good why cut it?
