Broken capillaries - is there anything that can be done?

I'm 37 in a couple of weeks and have just started to notice a few tiny red veins appearing around my nose and on my cheeks. What can I do about them? And how can I stop them spreading or getting worse? Thanks all.

The only thing that has worked for me is zapping with a laser. (Not IPL).
Expensive and rather painful and if the veins need a vascular laser to zap them you get very unpleasant looking bruising immediately after treatment which for me lastead about 4 days and couldn't be covered with make up. I stayed at home and did a Greta Garbo.
Some people find that the veins come back though even after laser. If you decide to go this route do your homework and get several consultations at different places.

I'm just trying rosehip oil on my skin as recommended here. I don't expect a miracle but it would be nice if the redness fades. My face looked better when I got up this morning after using the oil last nigh.

They are not yet at the stage where anyone else would notice them. My skin doesn't look red. It's just I'm noticing them when I look at my skin very close up. So I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to prevent them from getting worse?

I have 3 red patches on one arm that I've just noticed are broken capillaries. Not sure what happened but think I was attacking my KP and caused them :< If anyone knows anything that works other than laser I'd be keen to know as they look like spots from a distance.

BonDepart · 17/08/2012 15:29

I don't know if anything is guaranteed to prevent them from getting worse because AFAIK they're part of the skin's aging process because of damage that's been done already.
I had beautiful clear skin until I was 40 and now I have a lot of diffused redness on nose and chin, plus some larger broken caps that look like someone has drawn a squiggle with a red pen, and a lot of hyperpigmentation.
When I was having laser treatment, the consultant told me to always wear sunscreen every day from now on, avoid spicy food and red wine as those things are known to make them worse. She also told me that some skins are very sensitive and don't respond well to manual exfoilating, like scrubs etc.

Buy some Bare Minerals Bisque concealor.

BonDepart · 17/08/2012 15:33

Sorry, I posted too soon.
So Lola if you've been messing with your KP your skin may be sensitive and you need to be much more gentle with it.

I'd say the key thing is to avoid further sun damage. You can help that, you can't help aging.

valiumredhead · 17/08/2012 15:35

KP?

BonDepart · 17/08/2012 15:36

Keratosis Pilaris. Those little red bumps that many of us get usually on our upper arms.

valiumredhead · 17/08/2012 15:37

Do you get them on your face? I thought the face ones were little sebum bumps?

BonDepart · 17/08/2012 15:39

I don't know if you get them on your face. Mine are just on my arms and I believe Lola said hers were on her arms too. A friend of mine had something similar on her face turned out to be a reaction to her shampoo but it wasn't KP she had.

valiumredhead · 17/08/2012 15:41

Oh sorry - getting confused with the OP! Grin

BonDepart · 17/08/2012 15:43

It's ok valium - it's Friday afternoon Wink
I was just thinking that if Lola has been treating the KP on her arms roughly, it may have caused some broken caps in the area if what I was told about exfoliant scrubs making broken caps worse is true. I get broken caps on my legs as well as my face so I just make sure to be gentle to my skin.

valiumredhead · 17/08/2012 15:47

My KP went with Aveeno cream after every shower.

BonDepart · 17/08/2012 16:11

I'll give that a try.
Lola - try the Aveeno cream instead of 'attacking' your KP. Be nice to it Grin

Fuckitthatlldo · 17/08/2012 20:04

Yes I've stopped using grainy scrubs and steaming my face. I'm using the sorts of masks that eat off the dead skin instead.

Does everyone get them as part of the natural ageing process then?

OP posts:
BonDepart · 17/08/2012 20:31

I don't think everyone gets them but I do think anyone with fair and/or delicate skin is more prone to them as they age. Especially if the skin has been sun damaged.
I've also heard that heavy drinkers get them too - I'm not in that group, more the fair delicate type. Grin
