Orthotic insoles - how much room do they take up in shoes?

I'm due to get orthotic insoles for flat feet soon. Are my shoes still going to fit and is it sensible to hold off buying new ones? I can go shopping today but don't want to waste my money if they won't fit.

I wear the Scholl ones in the shoes that I can, and they don't take up much room at all, probably only a few mm thick - not even half a cm really?

I've worn mine in Uggs, DMs, COnverse, Vans, Fly London, Clarks work shoes, and not had a problem. Obviously things like Birks are no good with them, but 'normal' shoes are fine.

Are they being made for you? If so they can be quite thin apart from under the arch support area or they can be quite thick and need to sit deep into the shoe, it depends. I have some thin ones made for me that can go in most shoes but I have had to take out the insoles that were in the shoe originally a couple of times. I would wait (if you can)!

I've waited! I'm not sure if they're being made or not. I have a hospital appt, just have no idea what to expect.

Depends what type they give you. If they give you the temporary ones they are quite thin and can fit into most flatish shoes. If you can ask for 1/2 ones as they are easier to put into other shoes etc.

If you get the hard core ones that they normally create from a cast of your foot and then send away to make, I'd hold off buying anything new and expensive.

I have half ones and they are quite thick and I find they are fine in most shoes unless they are particularly low cut around the ankles. Occasionally I need a half size bigger so I would hold off. Sandals however are a bugger as you need something with a back to hold them in place.

Uh oh, I'm bad for buying mum shoes as it is! I suspect I'll soon be wearing great big boots.
