The ones in my local store are all gay.
Ditto the Jack Wills men.

When I was a retail manager in the eighties, I remember having at least one man in each shop. They were usually fast tracked up the management ladder.

nicecupofteaplease · 15/08/2012 07:57

What an odd question

ujjayi · 15/08/2012 08:08

I think it's an odd question too.

And as for "the ones in my local store are all gay"........words fail me.

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 15/08/2012 08:48

Just stating a fact.
I actually made a point of talking to the manager about the two of them, saying what fantastic service I'd had from them.
She was the one who said they were both gay.

So not sure what point you're making ujjayi.

PooPooOnMars · 15/08/2012 08:54

What does it matter? Aren't men supposed to work in shops or something?

MamaGeekChic · 15/08/2012 09:00

Bizarre comment! I worked in topshop 2002-2004 and i'd say 50% of staff in that store were male. Also, in many cases it's shared store with topman and staff are shared.

AKissIsNotAContract · 15/08/2012 09:02

They are clearly perverts who want to catch a glimpse of women getting changed.

MamaGeekChic · 15/08/2012 09:04

Also, not that it's relevant but only one of them was gay and wasn't 'out' at the time, in fact he was dating one of the girls...

Naysa · 15/08/2012 09:05

"I actually made a point of talking to the manager about the two of them, saying what fantastic service I'd had from them.

What right does she have to bring their sexual orientation into it? And why did you comment on it? It hardly affects the shopping experience...

Sounds like a shit manager to me.

This thread is really not a good one.

NoComet · 15/08/2012 09:07

As an older plump woman I find the lads far less intimidating than stick think girls wearing night club make up.

ujjayi · 15/08/2012 09:10

The point I am making MrsRD is i fail to see the relevance of their sexuality to their choice of occupation.

The fact that you have been personally informed of their sexuality by the manager is also quite awful tbh. Why on earth would she think she has the right to discuss an employee's sexual preferences with a customer or, indeed, anyone?

EdithWeston · 15/08/2012 09:12

I would hope that they only reason they employed particular members of staff was because that person was the best candidate putting themselves forward at the time.

I did not say to the manager "oh those two guys were fab...they must be gay"

They had both gone beyond the call of duty helping me get something for my dd...were fantastic.
I sought out the manager to comment on their great service. Having worked in retail for 15 years I know that shop workers often get complaints rather than praise.

AKissIsNotAContract · 15/08/2012 09:41

but how did the manager tell you they were gay?

ujjayi · 15/08/2012 10:02

MrsRD I didn't say you actually asked about their sexuality. I am shocked that the manager thought it was okay to disclose.

And Bandersnatch it isn't being po-faced. I can just imagine the responses if someone has asked why [insert name of menswear store] has so many female employees now.

germyrabbit · 15/08/2012 10:04

jeez wish i hadn't asked! was just wondering, guess they are students - just before there weren't any!

akiss, ujjayi its hardly MrsRD's fault that the manager told her they were gay?? "id just like to comment on how great the service was..but please dont inform me of their sexual preferences"

how come even a style and beauty thread can get peoples back up?

AKissIsNotAContract · 15/08/2012 11:36

I didn't say it was her fault but it's highly unprofessional of the manager to discuss the sexuality of her staff with customers.

I didn't say it was her fault either - I said it was wrong of the manager to discuss their sexuality.

Having said that, actually I do think it is odd that MrsRD feels the need to share that info here too. Why is it relevant? Why could it not be simply stated that there are males working in her local Top Shop? Why the need to assert that not only are there men working there but they are gay? Are there lesbians working there too? Transgender etc etc???

I concede that it is not necessarily the norm to have men working in high street womenswear stores but as I said before, we don't discuss women working in menswear high street stores.

I find it frustrating because I see how many young men are put off studying fashion & textiles at A-level/BTEC due to the assumptions people make about them and this kind of comment making reference to anyone's sexuality is so irrelevant.
