Can somebody tell me exactly how all make-up counter girls manage to achieve that exceptionally smooth air-brushed look with their make up?

I mean, I'm not even sure I want it. Sometimes I think it looks a bit too fake.

But I would at least like to know how they do it.

It is so unique. Very few other people look like that in real life even when fully made up for a night out, but you walk into a beauty hall and there they all are - make up that looks like air brushed photos.

I have got Smashbox primer (love it, by the way) and have tried several foundations that I am resonably happy with. I have however never found anything that completely covers the skin in total evenness and shows NO blemishes through whatsoever.

So what is the secret? Anybody know? Do they pile it on in layers or what? And if so, how do they do this without caking and piling?

Have you asked them? They may know the answer... Smile

I always thought it was because they put so much on. They probably have a good primer, loads of foundation and then a powder on top.

Then keep it topped up all day.

I'm curious too so bumping for you!

I used to be a make up counter girl. No secret.. Make sure foundation is right colour, use a foundation brush, a highlighter of some sort helps, eg Lancôme miracle éclat, and also please bear in mind that the lights in beauty departments are designed to be flattering

laracroft2001 · 14/08/2012 13:11

No they don't always have loads on, but yes most likely to touch up at lunchtime

Sonaive · 14/08/2012 13:14

I think they'd sell more make up if they looked fresh, natural and well groomed.

Never seen one I wanted to look like.

laracroft2001 · 14/08/2012 13:15

You never met me! GrinI don't like wearing a lot of make up

Gillybobs · 14/08/2012 14:12

A Chanel assistant once told me that ALL the counter girls wear Estée Lauder DoubleWear as its the only product the covers flawlessly and needs no touch ups. They aren't allowed to touch up their make up whilst at their counters....

I actually like DoubleWear although I apply it sparingly with a brush so as not to get the heavy handed effect. I also mix it with a bit of illumiating fluid for some dewyness. It definitely lasts!!

I am also intrigued and put it down to them wearing a lot of it... The only other people I've seen with skin like that are teenagers who are wearing foundation but don't really need it. Maybe they're all teenagers? Or maybe they have excellent skincare routines and are putting foundation on top of perfect skin, thereby making it even more perfect.

I would love that look! More for night out or wedding than everyday though.

Dermablend?? I used to use a mini sample of the foundation as a concealer, & it was amazing.

voscar · 15/08/2012 18:20

My ex SIL used to work the make up counters and she also swore by este lauder double wear. I can testify that applies with a brush in the right shade - its immaculate. You can apply lots or just a thin application depending on the look you want.

I think the opposite, girls at makeup counters always look awful to me, like they've scraped their makeup on with a shovel.
