Am going to bed wearing a sock bun..

...if I don't look like a raven haired temptress tomorrow morning I will be most displeased! Trying to dissuade myself from chopping it all off but not convinced my hair is long enough or that I put enough effort into tucking my layers in. Does anyone else actually do this or are my DH's derisory smirks justified?

Is your hair currently raven?

Because a sock isn't going to magically change the colour...

miomio · 12/08/2012 22:46

I tried this and I looked kinky in the morning - and not in a good way kinky! Good luck.......

abigboydidit · 12/08/2012 22:49

Haha! Yes is very dark brown but lacks and shine usually as too frizzy.. I fear I may end up with dodgy kinks too as I have the sort of hair that holds a shape too well (I can't take a ponytail out after even just half an hour as I get a big bouncy bend in my hair where it was...)

Trills · 12/08/2012 22:52

I don't think this will make it shinier either, just put some quite defined bendy bits in it...

You'll notice that the women who demonstrate these things on YouTube already have thick shiny hair.

Balls...

I do it!

It's a bit hit and miss tbh. It does leave my hair shinier because there's no frizz.

Zwitterion · 13/08/2012 18:59

Did it work abigboydidit?

GreenEyesAndHam · 13/08/2012 19:03

It doesn't work for me, it just puts the kinks in it.

I'm the same with the ponytail- take the band out and it more or less retains the same shape!

NewDog · 13/08/2012 20:32

It works for me! I sometimes leave my hair in a sock bun during the day on a weekend then take it down to go out in the evening.

swishes

abigboydidit · 14/08/2012 08:42

I am surprised to say it worked! Or rather it was no worse than my usual mess but took zero time in the morning which means extra bonus points! It felt thicker & looked fuller and I definitely had curls not kinks. I have naturally curly hair so it looked like my usual curls but on a good day! And definitely less frizz initially but got a it wispy/frizzy looking as day went on. I will definitely be trying again.

I do it all the time :) its great!

It does give proper curly curls though doesn't it!

RamblingRosa · 14/08/2012 12:52

Um, what's a sock bun Confused

It sounds like it's something I need to be doing (wild frizzy hair here) but I have no idea what it is! Bun inside a sock? Bun wrapped around a sock?

serotoninbutterfly · 14/08/2012 12:53

I think we need a linky Grin

Is it better than using a donut?

That girl on that video was horrifically annoying Grin

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 14/08/2012 15:16

Mr Kate????

RamblingRosa · 14/08/2012 15:22

Hmm, interesting. I'd tried doing a bun with a doughnut thingy before but it never worked well. I think I put the doughnut around the base of the ponytail and then tried tucking my hair under and pinning it to hide the doughnut.

The girl in that video sort of rolled her hair down over the sock which seemed to work better. I'll give it a go.

So is the idea you leave it in overnight and then you get nice waves/volume in the morning? Wet hair or dry hair?

RobinSparkles · 14/08/2012 15:27

I've done it before but it only made the bottom bits curly. I was so disappointed.

My hair is poker straight and will not hold a curl :(

RobinSparkles · 14/08/2012 15:28

I think it has to be slightly damp Rambling.

MrsRyanLochte · 14/08/2012 15:29

I think I need to lie down with a cold flannel after seeing that. She is really annoying and not annoying in a quirky zooey deschanel way (which I'm guessing is what she's aiming for).

Love the sock bun, though the sock she used looks pretty minging. Doughnuts (hygienic ones that never never been near feet) are £1 in primark.

RamblingRosa · 14/08/2012 15:31

Wondering about using DD's sock for a less enormous bun. Would that work Confused

PutIcecubesDownTheVestOfFear · 14/08/2012 15:55

I do sock buns for curls - it's hit and miss because sometimes some of my hair will slide out in the night and I'll end up with half curly, half straight hair. It's great though, much better than my natural curls, which are a bit flat.

Bun donuts are better if you're going for an actual bun though, but then you don't roll your hair down over them like you do with the sock (or I don't anyway), so they don't give you curls.

If you're getting that 'ponytail kink' at the top of your hair from the sock bun, maybe try putting it higher on your head, so it's right on the top rather than over your crown.

RamblingRosa · 15/08/2012 12:30

I've rediscovered my doughnut. I tried rolling my hair into it (a la annoying Mr Kate) and it works really well. No hair grips required.

I might give it a go with a sock overnight too. It can't be any worse than my usual morning barnet.

Isn't it a bit uncomfortable sleeping with a big bun in your hair though?

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 15/08/2012 13:57

Did it work, BigBoy?

clippityclop · 15/08/2012 14:38

DD1 does this all the time, makes her natural curls (which sometimes look flat because her hair is long, just a few layers) loo lovely and springy again.
