what do your DH's do re groomiing?

DH wants to start a bit more of a grooming regime. I am clueless about male grooming routines and products. What do your OHs use, in terms of products and the actual doing? If it helps, DH has fairly sensitive skin that is quite prone to spots and general irritation. Thanks I advance!

Surely he has ideas of his own?

If not, a quick visit to Boots or The Body Shop will soon overwhelm him with choices of male grooming products.

Do you mean you want him to smarten up as he's letting himself go?

My DH uses soap and water, shaves twice a week (uses Body Shop shave cream with a bristle brush) and whatever shampoo is in the shower (Timotei) and the deodorant I've picked up from the supermarket (Sure 48 hour) but as he showers either once or twice daily and has a haircut every two months (short back and sides at a traditional barbers) is always fresh.

Anything more than that would be unmanly in his eyes!

My dh has a shower every day (he cycles to/from work) and shaves. The only grooming he does is to clip his nose, ears and eyebrows when they get too unruly!

My dh swears by kiehls for shaving, moisturising etc. Very good for his sensitive skin, but not too fussy (meaning girly!) Also likes their shower gel.

RugbyWidow7 · 12/08/2012 20:18

Waitrose bottom butter is the only real 'beauty' product my dh will use.

Itdidntworkout · 12/08/2012 20:32

Kiehls moisturiser (from space nk/ John Lewis) is fab.

He uses my shampoo, Kerastase (bloody annoys me).

I have to force him to trim his nasal hair.

Haircut every four weeks.

DH also has sensitive skin and he could be sponsored by Nivea (uses their sensitive shaving gel, after shave balm, deodorant). He uses a loreal moisturiser usually but I have just bought him some kiehls as it happens!

He says the Gillette fusion manual razors are really good, much less razor rash than with previous razors.

Other grooming: errr, he cuts his nails and gets haircuts... Think that's about it

DH's current ideas are really: shower everyday, shave when necessary, and steal my moisturiser (nivea soft). This doesn't really seem to be working any more, and I have reasonably clear skin, so I can't really advise re: spots/ irritation. I know he could go into a body shop/ elsewhere, but I wanted to know if any of your DH's had done anything that had worked with similar skin... I don't know if the men-specific products are worth it, I guess there is a difference as my skin is quite affected by my hormones (he doesn't have that issueGrin)

Also nowt to do with me wanting him to groom more, or thinking he's let himself go- he's the one who raised it as I think he reckons I do something magical to keep my skin clear (actually just good genes- thanks mum!). Will look into the nivea sensitive shaving stuff, and also the Kiehl's bits and pieces.

What about exfoliation? Is it likely to make his sensitive/ irration prone skin worse? Thanks for the tips so far!

I'd avoid any exfoliators with bits or beads in. Muslin cloth cleanser is a good way to exfoliate gently but it's quite a girly/faffy option...

DH used to get more spots (esp in beard area) before he switched razors, so I'd definitely recommend trying that first.

What face wash does he use? Suggest something soap free (so not drying) and quite bland - the Simple ones could be good?

Thumbwitch · 13/08/2012 12:20

DH used to put nivea on the dry skin on his forehead, but then he used use anti-dandruff shampoo as well and leave it on for a few minutes while he showered. He no longer does either of those things and his skin has shown a marked improvement.

He does drink filtered water, has given up beer completely, has a live yoghurt most days and doesn't eat junk food very often - plus he's now on a multi-vit/min supplement - these things have helped him.

With your DH, he might find he's reacting to the water itself - some of the chemical treatments in tap water make it very drying/irritating for the skin - possibly something like a house water softener might help (but that's pretty expensive).

DH is a baldie so no shampoo. Number 1 buzz cut of any remaining hair about 1x a week. Neat beard trimmed at same time to about a number 3. Neck shaved 1-2x a week. Dove soap all over every day in shower. Boots No7 for men serum, moisturiser and after shave balm. Suncream if outside in sunshine. Diet fairly poor (takeaways once a weekish, home cooked dinners, supermarket meal deal lunches, no breakfast), occasional smoker, little booze. Nails dealt with by biting but actually they look OK for some reason Hmm. His skin is pretty good, no wrinkles, occasional spots. He's 38

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/08/2012 22:18

DH uses No7 for men. He used to use clarins until our household had budget cuts! He showers every day and uses my Aussie shampoo and Waitrose shower gel! Also aftershave and deodorant etc. He is very clean and smells lovely
