Which items of clothing are worth splurging on?

What items do you splurge on/buy the best you can afford, and which do you spend less on?

For me, a good quality coat is a must-have, also things like winter boots. I've also recently started spending more on jeans, as I always used to buy them from Asda and Primark and they never fitted properly and always shrunk.

Wool winter coat
Shoes / boots
Hand bag - keep for ages
and denim skinnies.

I second (or third) a good coat, carries you anywhere and everywhere.

And bras. Fair enough if you are 32A or whatever, but for the more well endowed of us, a good bra is essential. You look tonnes better, and clothes fit better with the right underwear.

I try and buy stuff that I want to last from 'good' shops in the sales.

So -

my main winter coat is from Hobbs but was half price in the sale: it was still quite a big investment for me but it should see me through at least five winters, I think

boots - again, I buy good quality ones but I buy them in the sales

underwear - especially Fantasie bras (another one with small back and big cupsize, so the quality of the scaffolding matters!)

opaque and woolly tights - Walford sales or M&S Autograph

jersey dresses in plain colours and good quality basic t-shirts/silk tops, because I know I'll wear them for as long as they fit/survive

Things that I don't/won't spend a lot on are -

flesh coloured tights/stockings
ballet shoes (Clarks is as expensive as I'll go for these)
jeans
fashion scarves
knickers - M&S three for a tenner suit me fine
sandals (Clarks again!) or flipflops
summer holiday clothes

Bras.

A very good waterproof coat with hood.
It is useless here without one as it rains most days. Have invested in Ilse Jacobsen.
Warm lined leather boots with a proper sole that can be mended( ie not rubber)
100% cotton knitted round neck cardigans which don't date in various colours
Extraordinarily comfortable but expensive black leather work shoes as I am on my feet all day.
Falke tights ( I stockpiled in Germany)
All my pairs are over 5 years old and all fine cotton and do not stretch.

I don't spend much on undies as I like buying new a couple of times a year.Blush

Agree a good bra is essential if you are boobilicious.

I will spend on coats, jackets, shoes, denim, scarves and handbags (also a big Mulberry and AH fan, Always). The odd dress in a sale. Ocasionally knitwear but I have bought some expensive brands that didn't wear well.

Don't spend much at all on underwear and have inherited some lovely jewelry so no interest in buying more. I think I'm going to stop spending much on t-shirts, I used to buy Nicole Farhi and Splendid and they are not lasting well.

Spend more on a winter wool coat (about £300) every couple of years from Karen Millen or Whistles. Also don't like really cheap shoes, I buy them mostly from Massimo Dutti in the sale, very well made and comfortable. Will not spend much on things like layering tops or jeans as I have found HM skinnies to be a brilliant fit for me.
I prefer to buy silk tops rather than polyester but again these can be picked up in sales from massimo dutti or zara.
I also spend more on bags as I like good quality leather but not mulberry prices more a coccinelle or franceso biasia or mimco.

Bras if you have big boobs.
Leather bags and shoes.
Coats
Denim
Cashmere

Trainers- you can scrimp on sports wear as decathlon do fantastic home brand things but you need good trainers.

Underwear as to be honest cheap underwear makes me feel cheap

Going out dress- makes me feel good with quality shoes

SpringGoddess · 17/08/2012 11:44

You don't need to spent lots on trainers though, more than supermarket level but between £50-£70 should be enough.

I buy top quality running gear because it doesn't get replaced very often - I'm still wearing tights and tops I bought 5 years ago ago. And let's face it, it's Lycra and it's close fitting, it's hard to look good when everything is clinging to you, so I want it to look flattering as well as being functional.
