Contact Lenses - with Astigmatism

HaveAGoodDay · 10/08/2012 17:03

So at the moment i wear glasses - i've worn contacts before, around 18 mths ago, the monthly disposables from Specsavers, paying by direct debit. With an upcoming holiday i fancied getting contacts again. I don't really want to down the whole direct debit route, its quite expensive now, but it appears i can't have the daily cheaper lenses because of my astigmatism, so its not a case of just buying a batch of dailies. Does anyone else wear contacts for astigmatism (and to correct their vision of course!) and has managed to just 'buy a batch' rather than have to sign up to a direct debit?

I buy mine from Asda online, boxes of 6 lenses. There's no contract or direct debit though. Roughly £80 for 6 months supply - not including solution.

StrangerintheNight · 10/08/2012 17:14

Yes, I do. I have astigmatism and buy them online from Tesco opticians, you can get them in various size batches. You need an up to date lens prescription from your local optician before they'll process the order.

Trazzletoes · 10/08/2012 17:16

Envy lucky cows! My astigmatism is so bad they don't do contact lenses for me.

Yes. I get my prescription at the optician, then buy online from Feel Good Contacts. Though I do have to pay for my contact lens checks now, they're only free if signed up for the direct debit.
I have astigmatism and use dailies (Acuvue Moist).

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons · 10/08/2012 17:18

My daughter has the same thing, she wears daily disposables from Specsavers.

BlendingIntoTheBackground · 10/08/2012 17:26

I used to use Costco...they were by far the cheapest around.

Got mine zapped 5 years ago, so might have changed.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 10/08/2012 17:27

I have astigmatism too.
My optician gave me 4 or 5 different ones to try. He gave me about 3 days of each.

I use focus dailies at the moment.

Hope you find some to suit

TwllBach · 10/08/2012 17:31

I order a six month supply from vision direct, no contract or direct debit.

Liveinthepresent · 10/08/2012 23:59

I use focus dailies too - I do pay monthly because I wear them all day every day but I know my optician would e happy with pay as you go too.

I have just started to get monthly lens from Tescos - I also have astigmatism and am short sighted (-3.75). Mine are the "air optic" lens and are £16.50 for a pair (lasts a month) no solutions. I'm really pleased with them as I can get dry eyes and these lessen that dry eye feeling.

I was very impressed with Tesco as the eye test was free and so was lens consultation - I am also going back after 6 months (again free) to have my eyes checked and ensure I am still the same perscription (48, eye sight is changing !!)
Wasn't just because it was free - it was actually the best eye test I've had very through and lots of dialogue with the optometrist (sp ?). Also found the monthly lens nice and thick - daily ones are too thin for me and I had difficulty getting them out of my eye ( been wearing lens for 27 years and just used to thicker ones ).

Brickle · 11/08/2012 10:26

Sorry forgot to say not direct debit, just order when you need them - in store or on line. Smile

HaveAGoodDay · 11/08/2012 21:29

Thanks for the replies. I ask as i've had a trial run of contacts from Boots, but honestly, i may as well not have them in, i can't read texts or see text on the screen! In fact any writing is blurred! They said contacts aren't as strong as glasses, but the contact lenses i had in the past from Specsavers were just as strong as my glasses. I went to Boots this time as i thought maybe i could just buy a batch of them as and when i needed them, but my prescription apparently doesn't allow this. So this leads me to believe i'm tied to a direct debit where ever i go!

And its not cheap, £20+ & more if i have solution! :(

Dh has short sightedness of -10 and his worst astigmatism is -160, the only think he has been able to tolerate is reusable lenses Confused

He tried several disposable types but found them useless.

BigBadBear · 11/08/2012 21:34

If you are anything other than big standard, you won't be able to buy them off the shelf though a decent optician should be able to order them in for you on the back of a prescription (and you'll probably have to pay up front).

I have astigmatism and high myopia and used to wear gas permeables. But about 15 years ago, an optician commented that my prescription is so high (currently -16) that correcting the astigmatism is actually pointless in the grand scheme of things so I went into soft lenses. Much much better. I have monthlies, which are great, from specsavers.

RandomMess · 11/08/2012 21:43

-16 Shock

At any point can you get financially help towards the cost of your lenses or glasses? DH gets free eye tests but that is little towards the cost of his glasses!

BigBadBear · 11/08/2012 21:51

Free sight tests if you are over -10 and some help towards the cost of glasses or lenses at that level as well. I get about £10 off a year, which is nothing when I pay £10 a month for my lenses and solutions and my glasses cost £300 if I shop around (but nobody wants to make them as the glass is so fragile at my prescription). I buy glasses about once every five years Blush

I have quite bad astigmatism. I have reusable lenses from boots as they don't do disposables in my prescription.

BigBadBear · 11/08/2012 22:39

Should have said that my astigmatism is about -1 in one eye and -1.5 in the other.

NotTheFunKind666 · 14/01/2019 12:40

I second another commentator on here to said they use Feel Good Contacts, I do to.

Here are their torics for astigmatism: www.feelgoodcontacts.com/catalogue/toric-astigmatism-lenses

evilharpy · 15/01/2019 07:07

I get my lens check and eye test at Boots and then buy from Feel Good Contacts. I have astigmatism in one eye and wear Acuvue Oasys which are fortnightly lenses - I’ve never found a daily disposable that I get on with.

lottieleo · 15/01/2019 09:33

I use 1 Day Acuvue Moist for Astigmatism from vision direct.
I buy 3months worth but only wear them occasionally so last longer x

Tootrousers · 15/01/2019 09:50

OP, dailies are a lot more expensive than monthlies if you wear them every day (unless you can get them cheaply somewhere)
