Are cheap American make up brands better than British?

I have been watching a lot of beauty videos on YouTube, especially ones by EmilyNoel83 and she is always going in about how 'drug store' brands are as good as high end ones, but she seems to mention a lot of brands I have never seen over here- wet an wild, cover girl, elf?? What are the British equivalents of these cheap brands. I am especially interested in eyeshadow palattes with lots of strongly pigmented shades- just can't seem to fid any like this over here- where should I look?

Elf are very good and have a uk website, i've used them a lot. I'd also recommend Sleek which is available in superdrug as well as their own online store.

We have elf here. Covergirl is their maxfactor. I think we probably have better cheap makeup; Barry m, bourjois, sleek, gosh, no7 etc.

Wet and wild was (might be still) stocked in bigger branches of Boots I think.

Cover Girl used to be over here but was discontinued about ten yearts back or something. Poundland or world in my area have bottles of cover girl in.

It might have more "staying power" than our EU equivalents as there are fewer regulations there about which chemicals they're allowed to put in them.

But how can you resist when you find a maybelline mascara for $4 which would cost 12 quid here? :(

knitknack · 08/08/2012 08:46

You can get all of those brands on eBay - I agree that our 'drugstore' makeup is just as good if not better :). You used to get cover girl here, btw, (memories of ill-advised blue mascara in the 80s - so cruel for a young red-head!) and ELF is an Internet only brand which has been available here for several years now.

Not sure which tutorials you are watching, but don't forget bloggers aren't always unbiased in their proclamations - they're quite often in thrall to freebies.

PerryCombover · 08/08/2012 09:02

Yes I think so!
Look at makeupAlley and they have gazillions of really recommended drugstore buys

Ah - I see it's EmilyNoel83.

Enjoying her 'back to school' make-up tips for teens - I LOVE it that she advises taking to school an 'on-the-go beauty bag' with hairspray, q-tips, make-up remover, eyeliner, pressed powder, blusher, bronzer, face brush, lip balm, deodorant and hand sanitiser. Blimey.

Yeah know she is a bit full on at times! I have heard good things about Mua- where can I get this from?

MUA is at Superdrug

anon80 · 08/08/2012 23:12

MUA at superdrug is AMAZING!! its cheap so I thought this is never going to work, I was so wrong - ive found this to be better than Dior and other big brands. Even the pink....PINK, eye shadow came out brilliant!!! I bought the palettes. All of them : )

Krumbum · 09/08/2012 07:05

Mua's powder, nail polish, 3 way eye liner and eyeshadows are all really good. And so cheap Grin

cloudpuff · 09/08/2012 13:00

I have seen wet 'n' wild and covergirl in poundland. Their clean makeup foundation is great for me. MUA is at superdrug. MOst of my make up is drugstore brands and most of it has come from poundland or bargain buckets or similar. I dont give a toss about wearing the latest seasons colours.

There are a few eyeshadow palettes on ebay which are pretty cheap. I have a pro 88 warm one - which has 88 shades of browns and neutrals. Some are very strongly pigmented, others not so but it was only £7 with delivery so well worth a try.
