Shellac nails?

Wondering whether to have these done for a wedding? Worth it? A pain to remove? Don't know much about them. Thanks.

I've got it on my toes at the moment but only had for a week and haven't tried to remove but so far so good.

NoGoodAtHousework · 07/08/2012 19:57

I've heard great things and will be having it done myself before a wedding a couple of weeks.

fanjobiscuits · 07/08/2012 20:00

Yes, definitely recommend. Not quite life-changing as it is only nail varnish, but certainly... Nail-changing. The end result can still depend a bit on the person putting it on though so get a recommendation or trial run if you can.

CountBapula · 07/08/2012 20:02

I had it done once and it wasn't great - my nails grow quite quickly, so I ended up with a gap at the nail bed after about four or five days, which looked daft. Then, when they took it off, my nails were all pitted and ridged underneath. They still haven't recovered and that was nine months ago Angry

I'd suggest instead that you buy yourself a really good base coat and a bottle of Nails Inc Kensington Caviar topcoat. It dries your polish in under a minute - brilliant if you're a smudger, like me - and it gives your nails this amazing glossy finish very similar to Shellac, but without the damage/faff of having it removed.

HTH

I'd definitely recommend it. Had fingers and toes done for daughter's wedding and loved them, would definitely have them done again. Especially toes if the weather would let me show them off (I don't normally wear varnish on fingers).

Took it off myself using the acetone/foil method, now six weeks later and nails are fine and don't seem damaged or weakened at all.

Thank you, may give it a go, I am considering it because I usually chip nail varnish very quickly. Bit concerned about the removing if it may wreck my nails...?

I would recommend it, I had a shellac French polish and two weeks later they still look perfect, shiny and no chips. I'm very pleased with the results xx

I've had shellac -toes- since June (not the same application you understand Grin). The salon-perfect appearance lasts about 3 weeks for me, after that, as Count says, the new nail bed exposure is too great. I remove it myself (takes about 10 mins soaking), leave the nail au naturel for about a week, then have the shellac re-applied.

Normal nail varnish lasts about 3 days for me, so shellac has been amazing.

Had mine done 3 weeks ago today, and only just starting to look jaded.

In that time I had 2 weeks holiday, in pool constantly with DS. Nails looks great entire time.

Haven't taken off yet but have been told to simply wrap cotton wool soaked in acetone round feet and put tin foil over top.

I would definitely recommend.

LilRedWG · 07/08/2012 21:13

I love it. When I initially had it done my nails were quite soft and bendy and as such it didn't last brilliantly. I've since used some nail hardener before trying again and am currently sporting perfect french manicured nails two weeks after having done - despite camping and digging in the sand for a week with the children.

I don't like the line of growth but it's far better than having chipped nails.

I always have them removed professionally (£3), as I've heard of too many people damaging their nails doing it themselves.

Trazzletoes · 07/08/2012 21:17

Hi, I had some done about 3 weeks ago and mine has been on the way out for about 2 weeks. The tips of my nails were pretty knackered where it chipped off (can you tell I'm not someone who has their nails done often?!) grin

My friend gave me the stuff to remove it, in a pot, but it's all evaporated. When you guys say acetone do you mean normal nail polish remover containing acetone? Or some other fancy product? I need to get the rest off!

ARightOldPickle · 07/08/2012 21:41

I used Elegant Touch 'Get 'em off' remover cos it was in the cupboard from when DD had acrylics. Soak cotton wool in it, put on nail, wrap in kitchen foil and leave for 15 minutes (tried 10 but came off better after 15). Easy peasy.

fluffydressinggown · 07/08/2012 22:03

I have Jessica geleration which is similar, it is amazing. I have a French which I paint over with colour if I want to brighten it up.

It lasts well for 2 weeks, after 3 it does look shabby.

You need someone who does a good job as well, even though it lasts longer it does go on like a normal polish and so streaks/missed bits are annoying for two weeks!

CheeryCherry · 09/08/2012 23:26

Well I had them done today, a French polish, they look lovely! Just hope they last..thanks all!

I love gel polish!!! Especially on toes - lasts about 6 weeks

Have been doing mine myself since I got a home kit in March so have now saved a small fortune (to spend on new colours! Grin)

Not always got time to go to a salon, so easier to do it in the evening when kids are in bed.
Also useful to be able to patch up - like when I slice a chunk of polish off chopping onions... Blush

Kit is only 60 quid on Asda Direct now - was 85 when I bought mine but still worth it!
