Ocm users: How do you look after face cloths/Muslins?

Stupid phone kept changing muslins to Muslims, hence capital M!

I have noticed my flannels have got a disgusting smell now when they are washed, dried then get wet again. I use one each evening then chuck it in a washbag and put them in with a wash probably every 2-3 days. Just a 40, bio wash. It clearly isn't working and I'm going to chuck them out and replace. What should I do in the future, soak them in something?

Seems really wasteful to replace them every month or so.

I wash towels and facecloth at 60 degrees, no fabric softener, and if you need extra help getting the oil out then a scoop of soda crystals in the wash should do the trick

ronx · 07/08/2012 08:13

40 degrees is too low. I wash mine on 60 as well.

ComradeJing · 07/08/2012 08:22

Absolutely at 60 minimum. I do all sheets, towels, wash clothes etc at 60 and tend to only buy white so that they can be bleached or NappySan'd with ease. (Do you get NappySan in the UK? Or is it just an Aussie thing? I can't remember Confused)

Also if you get a sunny day drying them on the line helps keep them fresh too.

Ok thanks, will do 60 with soda crystals. Do they go in the drawer with the powder or in the drum?

I just bung my muslin cloths in the laundry basket and with any wash I am doing - they come out pure white every time, I use Ariel actilift gel detergent.

TreacleSoda · 07/08/2012 21:55

I just put the soda crystals in the drawer bit

Hmm I have been wondering how to get rid of the chip fatty smell. I only use once, and hang over bath or towel rail to dry before putting in laundry basket and washing at 40. Only do bedding at 60 so not often enough really to chuck muslins in.

Might try boil washing in a pan...

thisoldgirl · 08/08/2012 09:41

I put mine in the machine's boilwash along with the towels. I use flannels and microfibre cloths rather than muslins.

They come out bright white, and as close to sterile as possible in a domestic setting. I don't do them at 60 as I've read there are various types of mites and fungal spores that can survive this temperature.

Okay am experimenting with a pan boil wash - have just put a load of muslins in a saucepan with a load of soda crystals. Will report back on any smell removal.
