Dyeing clothes - have you/would you?

I have a pair of black grey skinny jeans and a jacket that I would like to dye black so I can wear them again. Has anyone successfully dyed their clothes and how do I best go about it? I am terrified of using the stuff for the washing machine - DH will go mad if his nice white police shirts go grey afterwards Grin

watching because I'm quite tempted to dye black some lovely white shirts and tops that have gone grey.

done it quite a few times. the dylon machine stuff, got mine on ebay. give your machine a couple of extra washes after the dye and it should be fine. oh, and wipe the inside of the seal just in case any dye stuck there. should be fine, but run an old tea towel through before any important whites

Do it loads. Greying black skinny jeans esp. Use Dylon in the plastic pack. Does two pairs perfectly everytime. Follow instructions, you'll need salt too. I always make sure I have a black/ very dark load to do next in the machine and have never had a problem after that.

Excellent stuff and has saved me lots in jeans/ tshirts / tops tht would otherwise have been charity shopped or recycled cos they looked so crap.

Yep. I have dyed jeans, shirts and a jacket, using the Dylon washing machine dyes. I have to say that the colour is never what I expect, but I only dye clothes that I don't like any more so if it goes wrong I am not too bothered. I have covered bleach marks and rescued a pair of jeans that I loved the fit but hated the washed out look of.

I have only used black (on grey or denim it doesn't quite go black, more darkens the existing colour) and would say that it's best to do an empty wash with a capful of bleach afterwards, and then do a darks wash before risking whites!!

And remember to buy 1kg of salt as you need to put that in with the dye.

Hope it goes well!

It's scary isn't it! I've googled and all the washing machine dyes say that they don't damage the machine but then I suppose they would say that! I'm fed up with my black clothes fading so quickly. I've bought the detergent for coloured clothes now and I'm hoping that will help.

Yes, with Dylon machine-wash stuff, but make sure the seam thread isn't polyester, because that isn't dye-able and stays resolutely the same colour. Also don't bother with modal -
Doesn't take the dye at all.

Im a hoc winter so wear a LOT of black!!! Also i buy ds cheap white tshirts, when they get mucky and stop being so white, they turn black overnight. Works really well as he quite likes trendy clothes and shirts and often has a white/ black t shirt under stuff.

Think I'll give it a go this weekend when DH is at work. What sort of salt do I need? The stuff you put in a dishwasher? What about the "by hand" dyes? Dylon does one but I wonder if that's too faffy?

I've been doing it for years, lots of colours, lots of washing machines, no damage or dissapointment. Faded pale blue jeans -> green, white sweatshirt -> red, old white towels --> yellow, mucky baby clothes --> purple. Black stuff back to black.

Bear in mind that synthetics will not take the dye, and synthetic mixes will be lighter. Stitching is almost always synthetic, so the stitching will not dye. This can look quite cool or not, depending on the garment.

BikeRaceRunningRaceNoSkiing · 02/08/2012 21:57

Salt - just ordinary table salt.
Hand dyes a bit faffy, and less reliable - colour can come out blotchy.

quirkychick · 02/08/2012 22:04

Dylon machine wash is excellent. The black/denim already has salt in it and stops faded grey/jeans. The other colours you add salt. Yy to doing a wash afterwards and then maybe a dark wash rather than whites straight after. Natural fibres dye fine but not synthetics including stitching.

I have really successfully dyed baby/toddler vests and sleepsuits that had stained so they look like new. Reminds me I have some stuff I would like to dye...
