Hi.
I am seriously thinking about becoming a model Hmm Confused...
People have being telling me that I have potential since my pre-teens but I have been waiting all this time to be 'discovered'...
Growing up, my mum always made me believe that looking after yourself and caring about appereances/fashion/beauty is for the shallow/silly women but I always loved fashion magazines, shows and always played pageant competions with my friends.
Now at 35 (1.66 m/ I tink it is 5ft4) (size 8-10)(and looking a lot younger) people keeping telling me I should try even though I don't dress fashionable nor wear make up...
So, anyone here with any experience/advice/tip on the matter to share with me or should I just wake up and concentrate on my job?

TBH it's hard to say when I haven't seen you pose (!) but anyone can be a model. I was for a few years, and I'm not pretty 99.9 percent of the time.

There's a website called Model Mayhem where you can find photographers to work with for free and get a portfolio together. Maybe you can get paid work on the back of that, but in your 30s it won't be a full-time career unless you're very lucky!

I would think you are too short. Maybe try one of those modelling contests they have for older women in magazines sometimes, like Good Housekeeping I think

noddyholder · 01/08/2012 22:06

You aren't tall enough really.

GetOrfMoiRing · 01/08/2012 22:17

I don't want to be a spiteful misery but I think you are not tall enough or young enough for modelling professionally.

How about though finding one of those photographer packages when they make you up and take professional looking shots, so you have photos of you looking great - it would be a laugh at least.

cybbo · 01/08/2012 22:22

Not sure many people enter the modelling industry at aged 34

Older models have usually been doing it since teen years and have been lucky enough to carry on

Agree about having some shots done though, for your own enjoyment

Good luck but like the others say, I think you are too old now and too short. You dont know till you try though hey :)

Look on this site for hints, tips, registered agents and how to avoid scams: Alba Model Information

No experience of adult modelling, but have used this site for info as my kids have done it. If adult is anything like kids, be prepared for lots of work to be in London, and to have very little notice of castings (24 hours) so you need to be available at the drop of a hat.

MrsCampbellBlack · 02/08/2012 12:34

I suspect it depends on what type of modelling you'd want to do.

For high fashion you aren't tall enough and probably not skinny enough - sorry but have you seen how slender most models are - size UK4 I'd have thought.

Agree though that entering a competition for real women type models in something like good housekeeping could be a good idea. Seem to be more of those types of competitions around nowadays but I'm not sure how much money you could make from it. Also I've always got the impression its a very london based occupation which may or may not work for you.

Windsock · 02/08/2012 12:34

Way too short

Teeb · 02/08/2012 14:51

I think the height thing is the big issue, and probably why you've never been 'discovered' up to now. Most model scouts will look up and down a street and the first thing they use to discard/choose from is height, only after that do they look at general appearance.

Want2bSupermum · 02/08/2012 15:00

Send pictures you have now - picture of your face plus one of your body to a few agencies. If they like you they will call you.

I am 5'6" and at 17 I had two agencies begging me to sign up. My father was dead against it and looking back he was right. Friends who did it aged quickly and only two are still working at 30 (one has her own clothes lines and models her own clothes so not sure if she counts).

AWomanCalledHorse · 02/08/2012 15:10

You're too short.
I was a child model & when I stopped growing at 5'4 I stopped getting work (it's also vair boring & the rejection is cack).

However, if you're confident & think you'd like to model you could always sign up at your local amuter photography group/studio, they're always looking for people of all ages/sizes/backgrounds to photograph?
Or the 'real women' stuff, Essentials Magazine always have a 'real' woman cover star..would be a great thing to show your grandkids :)

You could always try film/tv extras work if you feel that you're up for that instead? (it's fine to be short & act!) Never know you could be the next face/voice of something (hope it's not another bloody comparing Meerkat)!

Good luck!

huuum , I don't really have a style other than the girls next door so I reckon I don't have much chance. Anyway thinking about getting my pics done by this professional photographer in London just for fun and to have nice photos of me as I don't have many but problem is I have to bring at least 5 outfits with accessories/ shoes and I'm crap at putting an interesting look together..

complexo · 03/08/2012 21:56

And also I need some nice pics even to apply for some agencies that recruit extras..
