Growing out a fringe at 40

Having a right dilemma. I have very fine hair, but loads of it, just past shoulder length blonde/grey ( well white really). Until 2 years ago I'd never had a fringe but got one cut in to hide wrinkles. I like long bouncy Jemima Khan fringes on people - sadly mine is more Dave from Slade with no opportunity for bounce or volume. I watched The Women on Sat eve and sighed with envy at Annette Bennings super chic do. My fringe is now eye-skimming ( but flat and at mad angles). Should I try to grow again or just accept the fact I'm stuck with a fringe that increasingly makes me grotesque? My hair is one length and I'm full o' Botox so wrinkles are no longer a problem but I do look every inch an oldster.

:o at Dave from Slade reference

We have identical hair by the sounds of it. I long for a chic Parisian style tousled fringe but always end up looking mumsy so have given up and not had fringe cut since February. I do however have long layers cut in, the shortest of which is around ear length. My hair is thanking me for it.

I started using Kerastase Fibre Architect shampoo and conditioner a week ago and from the first wash I was astounded that my fine hair could be so full. I also don't blow dry my hair any more since May and after the first week of questionable hair, I have been rewarded with natural waves - with a nod to Annette Benning's hair in The Women.

Personally, I adore Meg Ryan's hair Envy however she wears it: from short and sassy in the mid-90s movies to her gorgeous ringlets in The Women.

Thank you muchly ujjayi - just about to order the Kerastase stuff. Sadly no waves for me - disconcertingly poker straight here. I think, like you, I can just about tolerate 6 months to get the dreaded fringe to ear length.

I can't even look at the likes of Meg R's hair without being screamingly Envy.
Might get her lips though, to distract from the 70's Brummie boyband look!

Ujjayi, do you use mousse, etc? Very interested in this thread as I have very fine hair too. But I currently couldn't imagine not blow drying. My hair looks worse/finer if I don't

Charlies is yours dead straight and one length? I once had a few long layers for volume and it was disastrous - v thin and wispy. I know I can't have a short hairdo as my lank locks will not support a style of any kind. Also, can't have a bob cos' it looks mumsy on me. I have reconciled self to one length hair but I'd love it to look swingyish and classy. PS I've used every high-end product for fine hair known to mankind... apart from ujjayi's latest suggestion. Am desperate and will give anything a go.

Yes, that's me! Straight and fine and lifeless. Currently have a layered bob, but unless I style it for all it's worth, it looks dreadful. And even then it only looks good for an hour or so...

I grew my fringe out to now a shoulder length bob (I have to wear my hair off my face for work, so long fringes are a pain)

IIRC I let the edges get longer and used kirby grips until it was caught in my ponytail. Then pinned the rest of the fringe back.

I don't have layers (the hairdressers are always trying to convince me).

It took flipping ages tooo grow. And now I'm bored with the bob Confused

The styling products I use are either Kerastase Volume Active spray or Davines Volumising Mousse. I use Keraste Elixir Ultime oil too either as a pre-shampoo treatment or after shampooing/between shampoos (only wash hair every other day). Last week when it was hot, I smoothed my hair with oil when partly dry and twisted into a bun. When I let it down after a few hours I was rewarded with gorgeously bouncy waves and twists - there is no way that any amount of fussing on my part would ever get my hair to behave like that!

If I don't twist it into a bun then I pull my hair onto once side and twist the entire length in one piece. It does come loose but I keep twisting every 5 mins or so until it is dry. I also give the roots a little massage and lift to assist the product (iyswim).
