I cannot wear skinny flipping jeans!!

As I seem to be (years) behind the times I thought boot cut was still ok. Apparently not , so I have bitten the bullet and tried some skinny jeans. They are all AWFUL on me truly absolutely hideous ! I have parsnip legs , very long (36" inside leg ) but my thighs are huge compares to my bird like calves and ankles . They really do look stupid beyond belief on me and flipping uncomfortable too .
So what can I do ? Shall I continue to look like a sad thirty something woman in bootcuts which suit me or resemble a root vegetable but be vaguely current in style . I don't have a huge range of jeans to choose from due to my leg length either . What about straight cut are they also to be mocked? I might get away with those , maybe only carrot legs then

I don't care much about the current style but have found that the straight leg versions of NYDJ jeans look nice (I have pretty good legs but a bit of a tummy at the moment, and am very short). I do wear bootcuts (normal trousers not jeans) to work and could not care less what people think, I like them.

DontEatTheVolesKids · 30/07/2012 13:01

Boot cut is out? I was recommended to only get Bootcut at a Designer Jeans-Fitting session only 3 months ago. They were quite emphatic. Well, at first, then they started gushing that with my figure I could wear anything (ignoring huge muffin top that all hipsters give everyone nowadays). And recommended a load of styles that all cost 60 quid and would give any non-anorexic human female on teh planet severe muffin top. But that is supposed to be flattering. ??? Confused

I need high waist. Pure and simple. I can wear any style as long as it's high-waisted. And curvey. Can I find high waisted curvy jeans? Can I fiddlesticks.

snowmummy · 30/07/2012 13:51

There is nothing wrong with boot cut. Its how they're worn that's important. Don't wear mid blue ones that are too short with frumpy shoes. Do wear nice slim fitting ones with killer heels. Skinnies are not for everyone. Choose the cut that's best for you. Easy

AnArkIsAFineVessel · 30/07/2012 15:02

That's the thing boot cut with heels make my legs look endless , skinny = root veg. No contest really ! I'm not concerned with what people think of me on an Internet forum , I have read this piece of information (I.e i am an old dud who will be taking up the wearing of "per una" soon enough if I don't get with the times and wear skinniesGrin)
I do feel a bit frumpy mummy though , definitely need to experiment a little more just maybe without thigh clinging items

Donteatthevoles have you tried NYDJ (Not Your Daughters Jeans) jeans? High waisted and very nice (very pricey too, but I actually bought some on eBay (new not used) direct from the USA, where they come from, and they were half the price).

theDudesmummy · 30/07/2012 15:05

PS you have to buy a different size as they are American. eg I am a 12 here and an 8 there.

HazeltheMcWitch · 30/07/2012 15:15

I am the peariest pear in Pearland. But quite slim. I have also evolved so far that I have done away entirely with pesky ankles, which are prone to breaking on others. I go straight from foot to calf, no messing.

You may deduce that skinnies are not for me. I still cope, but go for a slight bootcut, either Levis Curve:ID or Gap.

DontEatTheVolesKids · 30/07/2012 16:08

Dudesmummy Can you recommend a good website to buy in the USA with very precise sizing info? I hate buying anything mail order, but will research, so thanks for the tip.

I loathe loathe loathe hipsters.

Bunbaker · 30/07/2012 17:53

"I wish they had a tool where you could enter your waist and hip measurements and it would tell you if you're bold or demi."

Try this

sweetkitty · 30/07/2012 17:58

I'm a size 8/10 and usually wear bootcut as I'm a parsnip, I find it hard enough to get jeans as I have a big bum and thighs but small waist so to get them over my thighs they gape at the waist, also have tiny calves and ankles.

Bootcut balance me out, skinny jeans look awful.

angryfurball · 30/07/2012 18:45

"resemble a root vegetable but be vaguely current in style" made
me snigger.

Always go for whatever suits you, if that's boot cut then so be it! I personally would choose straight rather than boot cut, if you look alright in them.

DontEatTheVolesKids · 30/07/2012 19:11

I've tried the Levi website, I've been in their shop, too. Their "high-rise" curvy-fit jeans still fit about 4" below my navel!!

BigBandwitch · 30/07/2012 21:15

Thanks bunbaker, I'm a bold curve apparently!

dexter73 · 30/07/2012 21:26

I went to the Levis store when I got my jeans and was measured as a bold curve - ended up buying demi curve straight jeans and slight curve skinnies. You really need to try them on as the sizing is different between styles and even different colours in the same style.

CointreauVersial · 31/07/2012 00:20

Ways to minimise the skinny-jeans carrot leg:

  • Wear longer tops that cover your bum
  • Wear boots (short or long) that hide the narrow ankles/calves and balance the thighs/bum
  • Wear skinnies turned up to 7/8 length, so the jeans finish on a slightly broader section of the leg than the ankle. This one works well for the summer with ballet flats or flip flops.

But they really don't suit all body types, so wear what you feel comfortable in.

MaMattoo · 31/07/2012 00:30

Uhh the straight leg is a classic design and has never gone out of fashion, skinny and boot come and go.
Wear what you like - it probably looks best and makes you most confident/comfy!

DontEatTheVolesKids · 31/07/2012 09:07

Wait a minute, what's that funny-name website that MNers link to, that takes all your measurements & then suggests loads of clothes & styles that would suit your shape & "style"? Dressipi? But they don't seem to do jeans(?)

Bunbaker · 31/07/2012 10:00

"Their "high-rise" curvy-fit jeans still fit about 4" below my navel!!"

Same here. The Levi bold Curve fit me nicely, but are just too uncomfortable because they are too low rise for me.

I also find skinny jeans uncomfortable in general and wear straight leg these days.

notjustamummythankyou · 31/07/2012 10:02

Yes, Dressipi

Trills · 31/07/2012 10:04

I link to Dressipi all the time.

It is not (IMO) detailed enough for jeans though. But no-one is.

For a true jeans-fitter you'd need

Inside leg (real)
Inside leg (desire length)
Waist
Hips (actual hips)
Hips (lower - the actual widest bit)
Desired height from groin to waistband
Some indication of how far up your hips and waist are compared to your groin
Some indication of how far down your widest bit is
Thigh circumference
Calf circumference

DaPrincessBride · 31/07/2012 10:12

I have ample thighs and ridiculously muscly calfs (think rugby player). Skinnies get stuck on my calfs before even they even get chance to take on my thighs Blush

I found an amazingly flattering pair of straight leg jeans which nicely skim at.....Sainsburys! The Gok Wan perfect trouser - lovely soft denim, plenty of stretch, lovely fit and length (I'm 5 10 so avoiding ankle swingers is another test). They were £18 (on one of those 25% off days).

I also wear flare bottoms, got some in the Next sale half price, and they really suit my shape.

If it helps, in real life I can safely say I do not zoom in on bootcuts and judge!!

Bunbaker · 31/07/2012 10:20

"Hips (actual hips)
Hips (lower - the actual widest bit)"

I didn't know there were two hips sizes. I always measure the widest part for my hips.

"in real life I can safely say I do not zoom in on bootcuts and judge!!"

Neither do I. I am far more likely to notice someone who dresses inappropriately for their shape.

Trills · 31/07/2012 10:21

I do too - but if I were relying on a website to find the perfect jeans I would expect them to ask for both, because both influence how the jeans will fit.

theDudesmummy · 31/07/2012 15:49

donteatthevoles I got it off eBay, will see if I can find the name of the US supplier
