What do you wear on holiday in the evenings?

Just looking for a bit of inspiration really.

It's more 'early dinner with DS in a typical Med resort followed by a couple of glasses of wine at the hotel bar' rather than 'glamourous romantic restaurant with gourmet dining'.

Generally I have a couple of jersey casual-ish dresses with wedges or flip-flops or white trousers Blush with a few different tops.

What do you stylish ladies wear? Any links to recommendations would be lovely, I'm a size 16/18, 5'5" and with a bit of a tan by day 3!

Simple cotton or jersey dresses with flip flops or flat sandals. Anything with a suggestion of a heel seems to try-hard for the Med IMO. I also like to wear loose fit vest tops with tailored shorts but as I can't stand longer length shorts this usually only occurs towards the end of the holiday when the tan allows!!

I go for a luxe hippy feel so keep everything pared down and simple - hair either loose or twisted up into a loose bun, and jewellery-wise I either go for one statement piece or wear a few very simple pieces. I also carry a cotton scarf with me which comes in handy if the evening is cool (for either me or the DCs :) )

Make up is rarely more than Bronzer, mascara and lip balm, although i will use brighter eyeshadow as eyeliner occasionally, iyswim.I can't bear to see a full face of make up in the evening heat. It just looks greasy and way over the top.

A dress of various lengths and flats/ wedges

Check as many places have a dress code in eve, ours last month was no flip flops for either sex and no shorts or short sleaves on men ( Greek island)

Cremolavelodrome · 30/07/2012 07:55

Maxi dress silver sandals pashmina

lilolilmanchester · 30/07/2012 08:14

I take some of the chiffony overtop things which glam up a plain vest top, but can take it off if I get too hot. this sort of thing only a bit fancier (tho actually, I do like that white top now I'm looking at it with big jewellery)

Trills · 30/07/2012 09:29

Dress. One that doesn't mind being scrunched up in a suitcase. So jersey, usually.

ComradeJing · 30/07/2012 09:37

Jersey dress or dress that will survive being packed and then shaken out and hung up in a steamy bathroom. Knitted linen dresses by brora or white company usually brilliant for this.
Tailored city shorts or short shorts with a nice top. Banana republic were great at my last visit.
Maxi skirt & vest top

Always, always a leather sandal whether it is gladiator or a thong between toes and thin strap around the back. Flip flops are day time only IMO. I usually pack a pair of wedges and then don't wear them.

YY to casual make up though I'm always a fan of a bright lip stick.

Can't go wrong with a jersey maxi dress - I have a couple of plain ones in black and navy - and I also have a couple of knee-length cotton dresses - I wear em all with flat metallic sandals. I reckon on four outfits being enough, but we are staying in a villa and going to local tavernas so maybe a resort hotel would be posher.
Forever Greek, we are going to a greek island too, DH would be aghast at the no short sleeves thing, so perhaps just as well we are self-catering!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/07/2012 10:00

No short sleeves on a Greek island seems a bit ridiculous to me, especially if women are showing their arms.

I've packed:
1 cotton dress
1 jersey dress
1 jersey maxi (probably won't end up wearing this as it may be too hot)
1 cotton skirt
1 silk skirt (not posh at all, just a little flippy thing)

Flat glad type sandals or sandals with a tiny wedge. Flip flops for the beach.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/07/2012 10:02

And hardly any makeup. Agree that full make up in the heat is awful. I usually just wear mascara and lipgloss.

landofsoapandglory · 30/07/2012 10:04

We 've just come back from Lanzarote. I took a selection of summer dresses, in various lengths, a pair of flat sandals and some silver

landofsoapandglory · 30/07/2012 10:04

*silver ballet pumps!Blush

ENormaSnob · 30/07/2012 10:22

I usually wear cotton or jersey dresses and flat leather sandals.

Hair is left natural (curly) or a loose bun.

Bit of bronzer, mascara and clear gloss.

beanandspud · 30/07/2012 10:34

Thanks for that, I am always guilty of packing far too much so my next job is to pare down the amount of stuff that I take. I am going to look for some sandals.

I never wear much makeup anyway - I don't like seeing people on holiday caked in it either.

Agree about very little make up, but I usually take a powder compact to mop up redness and shine after a day in the sun.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 30/07/2012 12:53

Plain easy-fitting dress and some jewelled or otherwise pretty flats.

Light scarf.

Viviennemary · 30/07/2012 12:55

That bronzer stuff is quite nice but some of it is very dark. And a bit of lipstick does wonders when you have a light tan. I tend to do skirts and tops rather than dresses as they are more versatile.

ujjayi · 30/07/2012 19:07

Viviennemary - Boots 17 (yes, really) do a fab bronzer which is a blend of pinks and bronzes leaving you with a fresh sun kissed look, as opposed to the "Going clubbing and did my make up in the taxi on the way here" look :)

Comes highly recommended by Sali Hughes in her Guardian Weekend column Wink.
