Anyone know a good make for under a fiver?

I can get a 400ml bottle for £6 in the organic shop (thats the cheapest one), the supermarket has an eco brand baby one for £1.35 but it still has crap in it just less of it.

Me no want chemicals and I sure as hell ain't using vinigar (YUK!) and baking soda rubbish.

'naked' are lovely and all natural. They do different products for different hair types too! It's sold in boots. Already under a fiver but often on 241 too!

shrimponastick · 30/07/2012 08:50

I use one from The Green People. It isn' t under a fiver, but it is very concentrated so a tube lasts me for absolutely ages.

I don't usually fork out so much for toiletries but this is really economical, as well as being lovely .

TacoLeBell · 30/07/2012 09:46

Another vote for Naked from Boots, really good and very reasonably priced.

Lavera is another good brand but a little bit pricier I think, and you'll probably have to order online. Their Mango hair range is lovely.

Nanabana · 30/07/2012 10:09

ive been using Liz Earle (SLS free), bit pricey but very nice, and good to know that my hair isn't being savaged by oil stripping properties.

Will look into Naked as a cheaper alternative

I tried Tressemme (i think it's called Naturals), good value for money, but didn't like.

Ryoko · 30/07/2012 17:10

Cheers I'll have a look in boots, Lavera is in the organic shop all ready looked at that.

I use a bar from Lush, it's £4.50 and lasts about 3 months with daily washing. Pink one, smells of cinnamon, best thing ever Grin

LoveGigi · 31/07/2012 08:10

I've been 'no poo' for over a year now and I won't go back. I use sodium
bicarbonate for shampoo, apple cider vinegar as a conditioning rinse and argan oil or coconut oil as a treatment. My scalp is über healthy and my hair is glossy and feels really good. I'd never have believed the results you''d get from kitchen cupboard ingredients.

skandi1 · 31/07/2012 08:35

LG. sounds interesting. Please tell me how you actually "do" it. And how do you store the ingredients in the bathroom??

Also if you go swimming how do you do your no poo then?

It sounds ideal but I am getting this mental image of being covered is grainy bits of bicarb whilst stinking of vinegar with a greasy shine from the oil so I need proper instructions. Please Smile

Vosene Kids No nasties Smile

Nanabana · 31/07/2012 08:49

ah I didn't know Vosene Kids didn't contain SLS/parabens. Will try that on DD as a change to the Johnsons Sensitive Head to Toe wash I've been using, which doesn't seem to contain any nasties either. but doesn't have any fragrance.

LoveGigi · 31/07/2012 10:25

I did quite a bit of research on 'no poo' before I started doing it. I think I was prompted by an article on it in a Sunday supplement. I had an itchy scaly thing going on at the back of my head that wasn't going away. I was also keen on reducing things like parabans in the products that I used.

Over the years hair products coat the hair shaft with substances such as silicones which will be removed using this method.

There is a transitional period of a few weeks, whilst your hair and scalp adjust.

I used to wash my hair every 2/3 days, now I wash my hair every 4/5 days.

It took time to see what worked for me but this is what I do now.

About a tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate, ( I just tip an amount in a cup, using my eye to judge) then with fairly hot tap water I fill the cup 3/4 full (online most folks use a 1/5 ratio for water to SB).

If the water is hot, the SB fizzes up, I give it a stir with my hand so it's all dissolved. I then tip my head over the bath to wet it. Then tip the SB mixture over my head, avoiding my eyes. Aim the SB mixture at the roots mostly. SB is a degreaser. I give my scalp a quick massage then rise my hair, it's now squeaky clean.

I then use Apple Cider Vinegar, I use the Bragg brand, bought online. It has 'the mother' in it which is just a cloudy pithy substance which is rich in enzymes.

Using an approximate 1/5 ratio of ACV to cold water, I slowly tip this mixture over my head. Again avoiding my eyes. ACV has a PH more similar to the PH hair has naturally. My hair is now soft and detangled. Although at this point it does smell of vinegar, a smell my DP loathes and actually makes him want to be sick! It won't smell when your hair is dry.

Then when my hair is still damp, I either use a tiny amount of Argan oil or coconut oil rubbed between my palms and worked into the ends of my hair.

I blow dry and it's job done! It sounds laborious but this takes me 3-5 mins to do.

I store a small tub of SB and my bottle of ACV in the bathroom cabinet along with 2 small kids cups.

It's odd at first not having the scent of a shampoo in your hair but I think my hair just has a neutral non descript scent.

Also I don't need styling products as my hair has a lot of body in it now, it holds styles well.

I've used shampoo on 2 occasions over the last 15 months for hairdresser purposes and both times when I went back to normal it took a week or so to get rid of the white flaky deposits which I think are the shampoo products being removed again.

I don't swim often, I imagine I'd just wash my hair when I got home.

Google 'SB and ACV' or 'no poo' there is a lot out there on the subject.

It's the norm now for me and it's nice to be able to avoid the shampoo aisle. ACV isn't cheap but it has multiple uses and lasts ages. I also buy my SB in bulk from summer naturals online. It works out very cheap as I use it for other household stuff.

Sorry long post.

Nanabana · 31/07/2012 11:18

have looked up the no poo method, and i'm intrigued, had never heard of it before. Am considering trying it. Thanks for sharing LoveGigi

LoveGigi · 31/07/2012 12:09

I would revert straightaway to shampoo and conditioner if the no poo method made my hair horrible in any way. I am first and foremost vain, Grin but thankfully I don't have to make that choice.

Ryoko · 31/07/2012 16:05

There is no way I'm letting vinegar anywhere near me, I can't abide that stuff it fucking stinks, puke inducingly so.

I worked in an animal home for 6 months cleaning out blood ridden cat shit from the sick ones, never chucked up once was told I was the only one never to do so, I'd sooner put that on my hair TBH the smell would be better.

LoveGigi · 31/07/2012 17:43

OP, that's the exact reaction my DP has to the smell of vinegar!! ACV has an alright smell IMO. But clearly this method will not float your boat!

Ryoko · 31/07/2012 18:45

I'm interested in the bars at Lush actually I will have to go look, curious about a bar of soap for your hair.

I've never been in there thought it was just a home made soap shop, it pongs so strong of flowery soap walking past I've never held my nose and dived in to look at what they have.

skandi1 · 01/08/2012 08:28

LG. thanks! I am considering giving it a try. It shouldn't be hard.

I am worried that I would not get past the transitional stage thought. What I mean is that I have highlight every few months in a vain attempt to hide my greys. And obviously they would need to
Shampoo it out and would I then be back to square one every time?

MrsTeabag · 01/08/2012 20:18

Naked Bodycare is fabulous. Under a fiver, lots of different types, smell great and available in most Boots shops, as well as on Boots website and on their own website. I alternate between it and Liz Earle (which I think is better, but is more expensive).

SunWukong · 02/08/2012 17:43

They don't leave you alone to look do they, after extensive looking on Lush.co.uk I went to shop to pick between 3 shampoo bars based on smell and was pestered by staff twice, I was in their less then five mins.

Me no like, I may buy online in future, I was going to look at a few other products in there but I just wanted to get my shampoo and go before anyone else came up and started telling me about products without me asking.
