Can anyone recommend a good salon in SE London/ N. Kent to deal with mixed race curly hair?

Title say it all really. Sitting in Headmasters which I usually really like, but last few cuts have gone a bit down-hill, grey been missed quite a bit on a couple of occasions.

Would like to go somewhere else but not sure where to start?

Just anywhere that isn't a chain!
There is one called zone on sidcup high street which has recently expanded into shop Nxt door whereas 4 or. 5 other salons have come and gone within the last year. So clearly they are popular.
No idea about your hair type though. I would have thought closer to Lewisham would have more experts in your hair type??

I use a local mobile who is great.

shattereddreams · 29/07/2012 20:54

Oh forgot to say, I used headmasters in soho or Mayfair a lot over te years, but refuse to anymore as the managers patrol the floor tapping hairdressers to hurry them up.

lizardqueenie · 29/07/2012 21:57

Thanks shattered. I think the hair type thing might not actually matter too much- as long as they are used to curing curly hair it's not as thick/ corse as Afro hair. Totally agree with you on the time thing & headmasters- you do feel a bit whipped in, whipped out & I feel for the staff who are running around like mad. Maybe why none of them seem to stay there for an extended period.

I would definitely recommend Juan at Our Little Secret in Herne Hill on Railton Road.

Have been going to him for 5 years, he is brilliant with curly hair. Lovely bloke too and a very small (one other stylist) and relaxed salon.

lizardqueenie · 30/07/2012 16:06

Thanks bedfordshire May I ask what you roughly pay for a cut with him? Thank you Smile

I have similar hair - curly, but not afro type hair.

I've always gone to a European hair salon, but I haven't been happy for a long time. My sister (who also has similar hair, but her's is actually wavy as opposed to curly) went to an afro hairdresser and it looked great so I went along and the lady really understood my hair and gave me a great hair cut.

My haircut cost me about £26 and I went to one in Croydon.

GoingToBedfordshire · 30/07/2012 21:06

Of course - £45. Expensive compared to what I used to pay at other salons, but I never used to walk away entirely happy.

He is v good. My curly husband and curly friend are also devoted.

lizardqueenie · 30/07/2012 22:26

Thanks for that Bedfordhire - I shall google!

Sorry to hear your unhappy too Chani would have thought you might be able to find one in Croydon or maybe Thornton Heath/ Norbury?

£45 is good for a salon, until you add in colour etc.

Also, factor in that if it's a good cut it should last longer, if they cut to your hair. So 10 weeks not 6 weeks across a year does
Stack up money wise

GoingToBedfordshire · 30/07/2012 23:37

That is v true about frequency of visits with a good cut. I only go 3 times a year and the cut holds its style inbetween.

His number is 02073260418 and the address is 118 Railton Road. He's fab.

lizardqueenie · 31/07/2012 07:38

Ah thank you- you've done the work for me! Just one other quick question- is it fairly easy to park?!

Hi Bedfordshire - is Juan good with European curly hair? I'm not mixed race but have reasonably fine, curly hair which breaks easily so I need to avoid any sort of drying/straightening to keep it in decent condition.

Usually take a trip to Sarah or Natalie at Willie Smarts in Crystal Palace - Sarah has curly hair herself and does a brilliant job, but only works a few days a week. Natalie does and excellent cut, but is about to go on maternity leave. Becoming fearful for my curly barnet.

chanie44 Sounds great, too - where in Croydon did you go?

chanie44 · 31/07/2012 09:18

I went to Suave on London Road, West Croydon.

Word of warning, they are always running late, so either get a really early appointment or be prepared to wait.

Thanks for starting this thread, LQ, its good to know that there are others out there with the same problems.

lizardqueenie · 31/07/2012 13:16

No- probs, its good to get/ share recommendations & I think it is quite nice if you can go to a one off salon rather than a big chain, I like the personal service. Also I don't really have any friends local with the same kind of hair so tricky to get recommendations locally.

Well I'm right on border of Kent & London at County Gate (slightly cryptic for a bit of privacy Grin
And have no hesitation in recommending my mobile hairdresser for dead straight fine but plenty of it hair.

And she is amazing at DH and toddler DS hair.

PM me for her details if anyone wants them. I'm sure she travels all over the region.

GoingToBedfordshire · 31/07/2012 23:03

Lizardqueenie - No, as far as I know it is all controlled parking round there. It's only 5 mins walk from Herne Hill station and 10 from Brixton tube/rail station. Check the buses too which go along Dulwich Road, they will drop you just a couple of minutes walk from the salon.

KandyBarr - Yes, I am not mixed race and sounds like you and I have similar hair. Feel bit bad possibly steering you away from Crystal Palace, as I have since moved that way from Herne Hill but stayed loyal to Juan!

lizardqueenie · 01/08/2012 07:29

Bedfordshire thanks- I'm such a car hog I didn't even think about train/ bus but train would be quite easy from
Where I am- very regular to Herne Hill. Was going to take DD to Brockwell park soon to check out the new little splash park so I'll see what the journey is like. Though I may have to buy myself a granny bonnet- I guarantee as soon as I have shiny smooth hair the heavens will open!

I know exactly what you mean! This weather has been the worst thing for my barnet.

Have fun at the park, still haven't been with mine, but apparently it is brilliant. And enjoy your haircut - am a bit nervous now as I have been so gushing. Make sure you report back!

lizardqueenie · 01/08/2012 20:52

No no no, I am sure it will be fine & am sure you haven't over-egged it! Its so lovely to get a recommendation. As Ive just had my do' done (iyswim) i wont need to go for a while now but would look to get in before Christmas.

Yes, jut need to set aside a day to go to the park when the weather looks promising!
