Is geek still chic for specs?

Have decided to go for some new specs and a new hairdo but wanted to check if the geeky wayfarer look is the one to go for? Any links would be appreciated as am notorious for picking Mumsy styles...

I don't know what the geeky wayfarer look is, but my 15 year old dd2 needed her first pair of glasses a couple of months ago and wanted great big national health/Morrissey style. We compromised on some Red Or Dead ones that look like something a Thunderbird would wear. So this makes me think that perhaps geek IS chic, for teenagers at least!

I just went to the 'teenage designer' bit for mine (v small head!) and chose some FCUK ones - I don't think they are geeky but I don't think they are 'mumsy' either. Then again, what IS a mumsy pair of specs?

I think geek chic is definitely the way to go with glasses. I have these 50's style with tortoise frames for my regular and sunglasses. This company offers brilliant customer service too. You can order up to 4 pairs of frames at a time to try at home (for 7 days) without charge. You return them through the post and order the ones you want online. My trial pairs arrived less than 24 hours after I ordered them and the finished product took 10 days.

Ujjayi, I'm just about to order the Gracie in black. And some tortoiseshell in a different style, but can't decide what yet. Big wayfarer types look silly on me as I have teeny eyes, but I like big chunky frames in a rectangle shape.

I have www.coolframes.com/glasses/lucky-brand-eyewear/lucky-spectacles-collection/high-noon-womens-prescription-eyeglasses.html

The brown ones. So not quite wayfarer but bigger than the slimmer styles I've had before. I'm not sure I'm cool enough to pull off the larger ones plus I wear them at work and they feel a bit more 'play'. Glasses direct are brill, as someone mentioned further up the thread. Actually got the ones I linked up there from GD but the frame was out of stock. Usually have 2 for 1 offers so you could get 2 different styles.

Thanks for the link louwn. I haven't tried on any wayfarer types yet but fear I may not be trendy enough either!

I have these

corygal · 30/07/2012 17:56

I have the most heavenly (unbreakable) men's specsaver frames called Grenville. Were 69 with lenses, I do recommend.

QuinnFabray · 30/07/2012 18:52

ujjayi, I have those exact same ones as my prescription sunglasses.

Catsmamma · 30/07/2012 18:55

yes, the Two Ronnies look is still where it is at for specs.

We are getting lots more colours in though, so moving away from black and or tortoise shell.

The fifties is making a bit of a comeback too, upswept cat's eye shapes, metal rims combined with plastic.

All very retro.

:o

Glad to be of service :)

msbuggywinkle - those are almost identical to my last glasses.

QuinnFabray - do you get many compliments about them? I have never received so many - I think it is because they are so quirky and different compared to what is available in most high street opticians.
