Bras - Does this only happen to me?!

So, I seem to find it difficult to find comfortable bras. I usually buy in Debenhams or Marks and Spencers and buy 34G.
I was recommended to go to bravissimo, they said I was a 32H Hmm but I found the bra really uncomfortable.
I always buy underwired and the ones that arent padded as such but are thick, iyswim.
On all of my bras the wires end up poking through the middle of my bra after a while - Why is this happening? Is my bra the wrong size? (It feels comfortable and I dont have any double boob issue) Is it that Im buying rubbish bras?
Does this happen to anyone else? Can anyone recommend some good bras for larger boobs but not bravissimo?

I think it's wearing a too-small cup size that makes wires poke through...because your bra doesn't sit properly against your chest between your boobs IYKWIM. There is too much pressure localised there.

I wear debenhams own brand ones, fantasie or panache mostly, in 32G. The tighter band does take a bit of getting used to, but I prefer them now- if I wear a looser band I get an ache between my shoulder blades. I always machine wash and have no issues with wires poking through. I do agree though that some brands are just a bad fit.. I can't wear Freya, they're just too shallow in the cup.

I wish I could buy comfortable bras! I spent over £100 in Bravissimo on 3 bras and got the knickers to match. gave up wearing them after a fortnight because they felt much too tight. Decided I couldn't justify 3 sets of brand new underwear sitting unused in a draw so I bit the bullet and went back to Bravissimo with them (over a month after purchase by the time i made it back to the shop) and asked someone to check that they fitted properly. The lady said that they were all a cup size too small, and when I asked if I could exchange (not buy more!) she said yes. Two designs were no longer available so she refunded them and... Best bit... Refunded the knickers because I said that I had only bought them to match the bras so they were now useless to me. Very impressed with the customer service, although a bit miffed that they didn't get the first fitting right. Now I'm trying to get on with the new size that I got on Monday.

Why is it that they fit in the shop, but as soon as you start wearing them at home they're blooming uncomfortable?!

I've been wearing Lejaby underwired bras for years and I've never had anything break or twist or poke out - they just end up looking a bit sad after six months/a year - then I replace them. I always machine wash them, but try not to tumble dry. I'm not a small cup either - 30dd. They can be expensive, but once you know which style you like you can look around. I just bought two on ebay (BNWT) for 14.99 each

I think of all the ways to shop for bras, online is the nicest. Order three or four in different sizes and then try on in the comfort of your own bedroom - try with different tops. It isn't hot and no-one's nosing round the curtain. Second best experience would be rigby and peller

Exactly my experience!

Itsgottabebags · 26/07/2012 21:49

You need to hand wash your bras to stop the wires poking out. I think its the only way.

Itsgottabebags · 26/07/2012 21:54

Elliptics I think its because day to day ife is just a bigger test of a bra than standing in a changing room.

emdelafield · 26/07/2012 21:57

I 've said it before and I'll say it again-you can't beat your local independent lingerie store. If you are in/near Glasgow I can recommend Pampas in Hyndland Rd.

You don't have to spend £££ -the window displays tend to be the really fancy stuff but in the shop there is a huge range and genuinely no pressure to buy.

Most medium to large towns will have something similar. Good luck from 32FF.

Kaloobear · 26/07/2012 22:07

If you're near York I highly recommend Kathryn Rolfe. I believe she used to work for Rigby & Peller. She's BRILLIANT but all the bras are in the £70+ range Sad Get measured by an expert, buy some cheaper bras elsewhere (be prepared to try on a few sizes as different brands are different) and then save your pennies and go back and buy one luxurious one!

The two main reasons for wires com

marriednotdead · 26/07/2012 22:30

I'll try again. The two main reasons for wires coming out are machine washing and the cup being too small.

Bras should be hand washed without fabric softener.

HumphreyCobbler · 26/07/2012 22:38

I bought a brilliant bra today, but it did cost 70 quid. BUT it didn't give me back hamsters and is unbelievably comfortable. I am a 32F so need the support frankly.

It isn't the sexiest bra I have ever owned, it looks like an old lady bra but the fit is fantastic. PrimaDonna.

MarianForrester · 26/07/2012 22:44

I machine wash my Wacoal bras on the handwash cycle. They have lasted ages. I got mine from figleaves with tesco vouchers and they have been great.

I have previously had the underwire problem with other bras.

chimchar · 26/07/2012 22:56

I have just bought a new bra today. My bappage is about 3inches higher than it used to be. Grin

I'm a 30K. Stupidly massive!

I can highly recommend leia. There are not many stores I don't think, but they are online and do free returns.

A good fitting bra can make you look like a new woman.

chimchar · 26/07/2012 22:57

Oops. Meant to say, their web site is leialingerie.com I think.

brighthair · 26/07/2012 23:23

I find Debenhams Gorgeous ones the most comfy and they go to a J cup

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 26/07/2012 23:38

Same problem with Freya gaping at the top - I'm a 32f at bravissimo, but I just find the back too tight, I'm now trying out 34dd's from triumph and an esprit one, they're comfy but push my boobs away from each other so look terrible with anything low cut, what's the point of having no cleavage if you have f cups!!! May give John Lewis another go. I just want a t-shirt style bra with a narrow middle of the boobs band and a bit of cleavage without gaping. It's like finding the holy blooming grail....

ihatethecold · 26/07/2012 23:59

After trying bravissimo I and the bras being way too tight. I went to the triumph shop and they were fantastic
They are about £30 but they are so comfy

So impressed with the customer service there

midori1999 · 27/07/2012 00:32

I have quite wonky boobs at the moment (it's a long story, but it's very noticable when naked) and went to be measured in the edinburgh Bravissimo. The woman who did the measuring was a bit of a bint tbh, not very friendly and a bit condescending, but I can't fault how good she was at her job. I knew the bra I was wearing didn't fit, had been in nursing bras for months and wanted an underwired to wear under a dress for a function. The measurer knew right away what size I was and also knew exactly which style would make my boobs look as evenly sized as possible. The bra was pretty, but I wanted something sexier, so asked to try some more styles. She got loads, but did say they would likely make me look more wonky than the first and she was right.

I did feel like the bra was a bit 'gapey' around the top of the cups at first, but I think it was just because the style was different to what I was used to and I had been squeezing into a bra two sizes too small until I was nursing. It definitely fits and now I have worn it in, the band is more comfortable.

I would never shop anywhere except Bravissimo now.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 27/07/2012 00:41

I'm a measly 36A and it happens to.me too, usually under the arm too.

It's just wear and tear on.the fabric pocket the wire sits in...but derfinitely not related to big Boone.

HazleNutt · 27/07/2012 07:09

I always machine wash all my 32FF bras (Freya and Fantasie mostly) and never had any poking wire issues. I still think it's the wrong size if it happens to all your bras.
Oh and yes, if you are used to wearing too big back size, the right size might feel uncomfortable at first, but give it a chance.

MouseyHousey · 27/07/2012 15:39

Right general consensus seems to be I need to give Bravissimo another try. Edinburgh is my local one too.. I will go in and get bras in 32 and get used to it! Will also try to handwash but I am pretty lazy so that will be a big step!
Thanks all for your success stories

I went into bravissimo about 4 months after getting fitted because I was uncomfortable all the time - I was just looking for something more comfortable. I ended up with the manager fitting me and all the old bras replaced free - outstanding service.
