Best product for curl definition

I'd love to leave my hair curly but the frizz takes over and I end up looking like a mad cave woman.

Products seem to sit in curly hard clumps - I'm need your recommendations for a good product maybe even technique, which gives curl definition and banishes the frizz....or am I asking the impossible?

Tricky. Serums I find are too heavy and though mousses are better they can leave hair crispy. The frizz ease range is pretty good. I used to use their cream stuff.

MistyRocks · 24/07/2012 09:26

right

until the last few months i hated my curly frizzy hair but i discovered coconut oil a few months ago and it has TRANSFORMED how i feel about my hair. after 32 years of battling against my curls i actually love my hair and i think it looks great.

i have been using it as a leave in conditioner every 2nd night (leave on overnight and wash out and condition as normal in the morning) and my frizzy curly mop has transformed into glossy, conditioned, defined ringlets

i have found it doesn't really matter what product i use on my hair but have been using pantene ice shine mousse. i blob some in my hair while its still wet and then comb through and just leave it to do its own thing. i have also had good results from herbal essences "tousle me softly" finishing cream.

i use argan oil as well, just a little bit on the ends of my hair

give it a go and let me know how you get on!

It prpb sounds like I own shares but I don't, the cloud nine wand is expensive but brilliant!!!

Curly hair is gorgeous but also a nightmare OP! Here's what works for me:

  • don't wash too often, I shampoo about every 4 days
  • If you're using any products after washing, apply to soaking wet hair - don't towel dry first
  • I agree with MistyRocks about oil - I have used sunflower or olive oil on my soaking wet ends (only the ends or you'll end up with a greasy mop!) and it worked well
  • I use Tresemme sulfate free conditioner as a leave-in - apply to soaking wet hair, with head upside down for a bit of volume at roots, and take time to really work it through every single strand, root to tip (I sound like a shampoo ad!)
  • Boots Curl Creme (pink stuff) to finish
  • Wrap hair in towel and leave for 10-15 mins
  • Take towel off and faff about with your hair as little as is humanly possible, don't put a brush or a comb within 100 metres of it, just arrange it into a vague style
  • Leave to airdry - this can take a long time all day but it's the only way I've found to get nicely defined curls. Even a bit of gentle diffusing leaves me with some frizz
Repeat every 2 days or so! Smile

I've heard good things about bedhead which you can get cheaper on ebay. I use Fri was mousse but small amount of oil have worked in the past (not sure whether it dries my hair in the sun though?!?!)

Wearsuncream · 24/07/2012 12:14

Frizz ease not Fri was!

Have to disagree about the pink cream from boots - found it made my hair really claggy. Was really disappointed esp since I had to import it since I dont live in the UK anymore.

Agree about using products with some oil in them. I've just started using a conditioner with oil & mousse afterwards & i've got lovely soft ringlets now. Also only ever comb when wet and only squeeze dry never rub with a towel.

Curly hair can be hard work but I love mine.

kaz1119 · 24/07/2012 12:52

curly head here as well. for me works:

  • not using shampoo (well, I use shampoo 2 or 3 times a year) - i usually only wash with conditioner and make sure it is in for at least 1-2h before rinsing it out
  • i use the boots naked range - I avoid anything that contains silicone (such as pantene)
  • after rinsing the hair, I finish of with boots pink curl cream
  • I just let my hair dry - no hairdryer.
mistlethrush · 24/07/2012 12:58

I love the naked range too!

I quite often only wash mine if I've been swimming as conditioner doesn't get the chlorine out sufficiently. I can't remember when I last washed with shampoo - possibly 8 weeks ago? Its been ignored rather due to lack of time - last conditioned 3 weeks ago Blush - but run wet hands through it every morning which reinvigorates the Paul Mitchell super sculpt that I put in after washing. I also never blow dry mine.

wheresthecake · 24/07/2012 13:22

I also like the boots pink curl creme ( although it doesn't seem to work as well in this weather) but I've been in 3 boots stores recently and it's out of stock. Sales assistants didn't know when it was coming back in. Hope it's not discontinued.

GentleLentilWeaver · 24/07/2012 13:29

(I have thick curly hair.)
Google the Curly Girl method.

I have been using Aveda's Be Curly Shampoo for about a month and it is AMAZING. Got it cheaper on lookfantastic. I really can't praise it highly enough, my hair is soft and lovely. You only need a little so it lasts and lasts, and the citrusy herbal smell is really nice. Has a thick pearlescent consistency; I've found my curls really don't like clear shampoos as they tend to be too drying.
Have also heard v good things about Aveda's Curl Enhancer, which I'm going to try soon...

messyisthenewtidy · 24/07/2012 13:36

If you have time to make your own products from natural ingredients this is a good book.

When I follow the rules in it it really does help but I'm often too lazy to.

Lottapianos · 24/07/2012 14:26

wheresthecake, I have looked for it in 2 branches of Boots recently and both were out of stock. Will be absolutely gutted if they've discontinued it Sad

Lottapianos · 24/07/2012 14:31

Just checked - it's out of stock on the Boots website too

I second the Curly Girl method. I've only just started doing this and already the amount of frizz in my hair has nosedived. If you go onto www.naturallycurly.com, you can do a hair analysis (ie to find out what type of curls you have, if your hair is porous or not, if your hair is thick/fine/coarse etc) and this will help you to choose products which will work with, not against, your hair type. I could not work out why I was conditioning more and more but my hair was getting drier and drier...turns out every product I was using had protein in it, which was making my already coarse hair coarser!
I've ditched the silicone as although it can seal in moisture, if your hair still needs moisture it can seal it out, and since some silicones build up in the hair, it can mean that conditioners do not work to their full advantage.
I use Boots Naked shampoo every so often, but have recently started washing with conditioner. I use one with no protein or silicone. I use a leave in conditioner then Trevor Sorbie Original Curl Creme (clear/white tube, not the green one!) and wrap my hair in an old t-shirt to let it dry gently. It seems to be working so far. I haven't tried Argan oil yet but I tried Amargan which was highly praised on here but it did absolutely nothing for my hair!
What also helps define my curls is using a curl Creme and then twist small sections of hair into ringlets all over my head. Some people mix curl Creme in with gel to get more hold. A good site for advice and product reviews is www.britishcurlies.co.uk. They also have an online store and I've ordered some products from non-high st brands such as Curl Junkie, in the hope that they will make my hair beautiful! Good luck :)

SpringGoddess · 24/07/2012 16:36

I use Boots Naked shampoo as a shampoo and a shower gel - it is the only soap I've ever used that doesn't irritate my skin - I do wonder what the other shampoos contain.

Overdid it again with the oil and ended up a bit greasy looking, it's hard to get it right.
