Tell me about paraben-free natural whatsit products

Just as the title says really! I'd like to start to use more natural products on myself and DS (nearly 2). To begin with, I'd like a (non-perfumed?) soap and a light moisturiser.

Can anyone recommend brands and tell me about the various chemicals etc that is should try to avoid?

Just read labels and avoid anything that sounds un-natural.

I don't care for pointing out each thing that has been linked to something, thats only half the story IMO, like with pesticides the cumulative effect of all that shit soaking into your skin and floating round your blood stream has never been tested so best be on the safe side.

My rule of thumb is to go for things that are edible first and foremost.

RecursiveMoon · 22/07/2012 22:48

But everything sounds unnatural Ryoko Grin!

I'm guessing that I'll have to venture outside Boots to buy something more natural?

Well they have the botanical range but I'm talking more the oils and honey etc in the supermarket.

If you got a big organic food shop like As Nature Intended or something they have loads of things (expensive tho).

AgathaFusty · 23/07/2012 09:03

Have a look at this site.

I've used their mascara and eye liners for a while now - mainly because I appear to be allergic to parabens. I have been really impressed, and even better, after using the mascara for around a month, my eyelashes became noticeably thicker.

MissFoodie · 23/07/2012 10:17

boots botanicals is full of silicone, sorry!

here are loads I've reviewed: [www.yumetcetera.com]

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 23/07/2012 11:19

I use Lush, they're pretty good. Some of their shampoos have some "nasties" in but they're working to get rid of them, and there's plenty of parabens etc free stuff. Check out their site.

RecursiveMoon · 23/07/2012 12:41

Thanks all Smile!

I have a plan now - I'm going to buy some PitRok, Organic Surge facial wash and moisturiser, and possibly some Lush soap.

I love your blog MissFoodie. I think I've seen it mentioned on threads before, so it's great to get pointed in the right direction for it.

Holland and Barrett do a range called Dr Organic, which is paraben free etc. Their manuka honey range is lovely and it's quite cheap!

MissFoodie · 23/07/2012 14:34

yes the OS face wash is really nice, especially for the price too!

LandenParkeLaine · 23/07/2012 16:05

My skin seems horribly allergic to SLS and Parabens so I always use natural products.

Love Lula is a great website for skin care and cosmetics, plus they have reviews which I always find useful. The Naked range in Boots is a bit hit and miss but I've always found their conditioners quite good. I use Weleda Calendula cream bath for DS who also has eczema, it's lovely.

EugenesAxe · 23/07/2012 16:10

What on earth are parabens? I get all my baby stuff from Natural Collection, or Spirit of Nature, and they all tend to be 'paraben free'. But why this is good I do not know.

The Earth Friendly Baby bubble bath is really bubbly; you don't often get this with eco stuff. My children don't appear to suffer from it ezcema wise, but they don't have it on a big scale like some poor children.

Unlurked · 23/07/2012 16:14

For skin care I'd suggest the oil cleansing method, I started about 6 months ago and love it.

GentleLentilWeaver · 23/07/2012 16:23

Weleda and Earth Friendly baby stuff is lovely, I have used both extensively. Lush soap/shampoo stuff isn't THAT natural but they do use nice real essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances, which is nice. Their moisturizers are fantastic and pretty natural. I've been trying to stay SLS free with hair products, and have stopped using conditioners and serums with silicone in. My hair seems much happier. At the moment I'm using Green People and Aveda on my hair. The latter isn't 100% natural by a long shot but it's so nice.

If you happen to live near Bury (Greater Manchester), there is a natural/organic salon called Pure Hair Design and Beauty - www.purehairdesignandbeauty.co.uk. All the products used in the salon do not contain any nasties.

Brands - I would suggest Dr Organics (at Holland and Barrett), Faith in Nature online (they also have a kids range as well) and Naked Bodycare online and soon to be in Sainsburys. If you are feeling brave try making your own. I've been doing it for years. It's just like cooking. Follow a recipe and you can't go far wrong! Two good websites for ideas and ingredients are Aromantics and Gracefruit.

RecursiveMoon · 23/07/2012 20:27

Right, I've ordered a PitRok and a Naked shampoo and conditioner because it was on offer. I'm about to check out the Organic Surge website again...

We use Burt's bees baby stuff plus shower gel for me. It's not cheap but I really rate it. I can't use johnsons with dd it really hurts her eyes compared to BB baby shampoo. We also use Ecover refillable laundry products and have done for years Grin

RecursiveMoon · 23/07/2012 20:57

Okay, I'm significantly poorer now.

Lots of great posts, thank you. I'm going to see how I get on with the things that I've ordered so far. I'll be using the OCM and whipping up a face mask before I know it Grin.

Green People is great. I use their skincare range, and about to buy their shampoo too. And it's UK-based, which is a bonus, imo.

RecursiveMoon · 23/07/2012 20:58

Oh, I nearly forgot, any more hard-bar-of-soap recommendations? I usually use Simple, but I suspect that it's not.

OP posts:
RecursiveMoon · 23/07/2012 20:59

Oh, Ocado stock Green People products I think. I'm sure they're on offer at the mo actually.

OP posts:
Conflugenglugen · 23/07/2012 21:13

Tisserand is a good soap company. Not cheap though.

surreyhousefrau · 23/07/2012 22:12

Ive read a bit recently about parabens being replaced in products by a new nasty - phenoxyethanol .... like parabens a preservative, does anyone have any thoughts?? i thought i'd perfected by paraben free routine, esp for the kids only to find this one lurking in the products.

RecursiveMoon · 26/07/2012 20:05

I love my new Organic Surge facial wash and moisturiser Smile. They smell fab, and my face feels nice after using them.
