That's it really - I am very short (5 foot 1) and currently a size 14 with a BIG problem with carrying weight around my middle. I have smallish breasts (34B) and sometimes think I look pregnant :(

What should I be wearing to flatter my shape? I am hoping to lose sone weight this summer, but until I do, would really appreciate some help with what to wear so that I don't look pregnant and/or frumpy.

That's me too, so not a lot of help. I actually find that's what's most flattering is a waist length cardigan of jacket, preferably fitted, but don't do it up and a loose-ish top under (ie. not tight enough to show tummy!). To be honest, I mostly wear tightish jeans with huge tops as it's easiest but it does make me look bigger than I am. Waist height trousers (ie. not hipsters) are good with a slightly longer than waist top. I got some new ones in the sales and wore with a loose but not baggy T-shirt and people thought I lost weight! I hadn't but was just wearing something slightly more fitted (but not tight).

here is a thread about this problem Calling all apples

I'm an apple too, fine until I turn sideways. Watching this thread for top tips.

Also, check if you're drinking lots of fizzy drinks. I read yesterday that they can lead to big bellies, as can alcohol (but I'm ignoring that bit).

Thanks ladies- also thanks for the link, Marigold. The problem is that I have small breasts as well - many of the apples on that thread said they had nice big breasts. I wish that were me :(

How about an underwired padded bra to make the most of your boobd? With smallish boobs you can probably wear a long scarf to draw the eye away from the tummy. Chunky boots or shoes might balance things a bit too.

I too have this problem-huge overhang after 2 sections. I was actually asked by a little tot yesterday if I was having a babySad. I am a size 14/16,38E boobs but slim through the hips and legs-all my weight goes immediately to my stomach.

I find the most flattering things are dresses-I never wear trousers or jeans now. I wear tea, wrap or prom style dresses-anything that is fitted at the waist but shows off the boobs.

Bhs-yes really!-have some lovely prom style dresses that are now in the sale. They look a bit boring on the hanger but are supremely flattering on.

New look and Monsoon are good for tea dresses.

I agree with making sure you have a bra that gives you plenty of uplift and shape-even with your old bras make sure you tighten the straps and back as it is much more flattering to the figure.

Buy some sucky in pants-I loathe underwear but I buy the opaques from m&s that have built in tummy control-holds the gut in a bit.

how about skater style dresses?

they fit at the waist but flare out over the tummy area

dementedma · 22/07/2012 20:02

I feel your pain, but have no answers Sad. I don't like dresses as I'm not very girly so really struggle with this.
