So following on from frumpy thread.....what the blooming heck should I be wearing?

Aged 37, sahp so need day to day clothes, gym, odd lunch, no very dressy stuff needed

5 months postnatal (on a very slowweight loss journey) size 18, 5'8'', I would say my weight is evenly distributed, I feel comfortable with how I look in skinnies, (though as a relative newbie who lurks shocked to see term parsnip legs!)

I am v confused now after reading frumpy thread. I have shopped regular at next over the years Shock or Blush.

I shop high street, and quite like monsoon as feel their cut is good for me. Like my jeans and trainers but also quite feminine pieces from monsoon. Current wardrobe:

Straight leg jeans
Skinny jeans (mint velvet) > all dark blue
Skinny jeans (next)
Long sleeve ts black/grey/white

Heavy fur trimmed pink tweed gullet from fatface
Long black quilted Parker with fur trim
Thin khaki green grungy Parker

Long grey cowl neck
Long grey cardigan
Longline navy cardigan
White v neck cardigan

Navy, red, black poppy print tunic dress (large abstracty looking)
Denim shirt dress
Cotton black shirt dress
Feather print dress (black white turquoise)
Black and white maxi print dress

Tan boat shoes matching tan leather bag
Navy supergas
White footbed sandals
Nude wedges with corsage decor, and cork heels
Black wedges simple toe bar and straps round.

I have other stuff that I suspect I should not wear anymore, I'll check these later.

So I. Trying to plan my AW buys and just don't know:

Black skinned or straight legs
Black with white spots peplum top
Knee high boots black, but havnt got a clue what to get.
Classic style mac in Berry colour for autumn
And these..

this cardigan

this dress which I will have to wear with leggings, or thick tights and black knee highs.

I have just bought a pair of mustard pumps quite plain suede that would go great with cardigan for £10 and found two fossil bags across body ones for £40 each.

I'm tired feel like I get it wrong, and constantly struggle with practical (possibly frumpy) to should I buying seasonal disposables, or classic core wardrobe.

I want to just keep on the right side of on trend without being a full blown fashionista. I have started to get hair done every month, but nails never seem to get them sorted.

Is it that bad no one got anything to say? Grin

Not loving the cardi or the dress.

Both could work -- depends on how you style.

Actually probably not the cardi.

Try a blazer.

Originalplurker · 20/07/2012 20:37

Thanks mirpuppet

I was just thinking of wearing cardi with blue skinnys.

Dress as I said with black leggings or tights and boots.

This was me trying to do trends, you see I'll end up in my long sleeve ts and jeans forever.

Sad but not having a particular good day.

Not keen on the Monsoon dress. Makes even the model in the picture look a bit hefty!

Originalplurker · 20/07/2012 21:02

Ok thanks much appreciated, back to drawing board.

I do. Have lots of scarves!

What do you thinks about a black n white spotty peplum top?

OP posts:
dexter73 · 20/07/2012 21:35

Do you have a link to the top? I can't really picture what it could look like - big spots/small spots/, black with white spots or the other way, neckline?

diddlediddledumpling · 20/07/2012 22:56

see I do like the cardigan. But I'm fast realising from the frumpy thread that I know nothing. watching this with interest.

WipsGlitter · 20/07/2012 23:00

Neither cardi nor dress.

Originalplurker · 20/07/2012 23:04

Hmm hmm, so what should I be wearing folks?

TheWombat · 20/07/2012 23:11

Scarves are good!
I think you have some good basics in your wardrobe already. Perhaps you could get a couple of more colourful bits to mix into what you have?

What is your colouring like? That might tell us more whether the things you linked to would suit you :)

TheWombat · 20/07/2012 23:14

Clarks have some good non-frumpy boots in their autumn range this year. Not really sure about peplum tops - a bit high fashion for me but I think if you are curvy it might look good with a pencil skirt. :)

Originalplurker · 20/07/2012 23:21

Thanks wombat

Pale pinky complexion with dark brown hair.

I thought the cardi was to be my seasonal colour! I bought mustard pumps in readiness!

I do love my scarves. If it helps my dhj has always described me as a bit boho, studenty type.

I'll check Clarke, too thanks.

I like the sound of mustard pumps, would look good with the rusts and teals around this autumn :). and lovely with indigo skinniest too.

Originalplurker · 21/07/2012 12:54

this peplum top with black skinnies

There is a cream one.

Right I like the cardi but can see its rugeskness! And think it will be one of these patterned buys that I'll look at and think heavens that's dreadful in a few months time.

I'm reserving judgement on the dress until I've tried it on, as I know there are tons more dresses about that are nicer but i do know these style from monsoon seem to fit my shape and size.

Sorry but I think the cardigan and dress both have to go back, unless you really love them. And I think a peplum on a size 18 is unlikely to be your best look. And I suspect that the gilet is unlikely to be your best friend either.

If I were you I'd get:

  • black skinnies (the ones that are cotton rather than faded black denim) M&S do fantastic ones for just over 20 pounds
  • a couple of tops that are nicer than t-shirts but not too dressy: eg simple silk t-shirts or a nice cowl necked fairly shaped one
  • knee high boots (but personally I think brown or tan more useful than black)
  • a biker jacket rather than a trench
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/07/2012 14:29

Love the sound of these 3 btw - Denim shirt dress
Cotton black shirt dress
Feather print dress

Gillybobs · 21/07/2012 14:35

Ive a few of these types of tops from Phase Eight silk front t shirt and they are comfy and casual but smart , I wear with skinnies and nice cardi. Also have similar from Mint Velvet and Zara. Id avoid plain LS t's like the plague as they are horribly unforgiving.

Also bought this cardi I dont ever normally shop in Factface but there happened to be one when we were on holiday and I needed a retail fix...it look great over the cream silky T above, teamed with indigo skinnies and ballet flats. Or what about this Kew cardi

Agree on leather jacket and knee high boots (love tan personally) too.

Originalplurker · 21/07/2012 15:14

Oh right this is all great, im taking this all on board.

I havnt bought the cardi or dress btw. I thought a peplum top would work with my curves as the flare out? Well I havnt actually tried any on the be fair.

I have a chocolate brown biker jacket (leather) but I thought it might look dated re brown been and gone, but is it forgiven if style is correct and it's leather?

I will look at links to get ideas and feedback.
i really really appreciate all posts thanks Smile
