Cutting cut offs - as simple as that?

I have two pairs of super comfy favourite jeans which have, now sadly, gone at the knees or on a leg crease. Similarly, DS has a pair which are too short as trousers but which are a really nice style and fit him perfectly otherwise.

To turn them into cut offs are there any "tips" on doing this - or is it simply take a sharp pair of robust scissors to them in a straight line across?? Once cut, I assume they will naturally fray (which is fine) or is there something to do to get an "even" fray...

I know this sounds a bit thick but as I have never done it before, I didn't know if there are any obvious pitfalls to doing this!

TIA

I saw a blog post on doing exactly this last week. I can't link it, am at work and no access to blogs (surprise surprise!) but i think it's whatiwore.tumblr, I think the woman's name is Jessica Quirk. Give a google. The post was 1 or 2 weeks ago. She cut a pair of coral jeans, and it caught my attention because she looked fantastic in them!

So, this is the link. I'm sure I read the instructions at the time. I can't see them now, but they're there somewhere.

Im turning some of my children's trousers into shorts because they have become too short. Im making turn ups though so will be cutting some off, turning a bit over and putting a few stitches in on either side.

I also saw a blog post this week but can't find it. They recommended cutting inseam to 3 inches which were too short for me (pockets showing) and washing so cut ends frays.

I did cut a pair of my husbands old jeans today and went for a baggy boyfriend style which I rolled up (will wash later and see if it frays). I did a 10 inch inseam came to about my knee which I rolled up a bit more.

I say cut log as you can always go back and cut shorter.

Yeah the sun is coming Smile

long

If you sew a seam around each leg (not a hem) it will stop them frying too much.

They always look bad

I cut a pair of a little bit too short New Look jeans down when it was sunny earlier in the year. I just cut them a few inches too long then folded them up twice (to look like turn ups iykwim) then gave them a really good press. If you were feeling particularly dedicated you could iron some of the bonding tape stuff into the turn up, but I didn't find mine needed it. The folds just give a smarter look then fraying.
