Are linen muslin squares a waste of money?

The ones I've seen are about £35 for three! They are almost sheet size. They were nicely packaged and are going to be a present. Will th ey be of any use though?

Muslin squares are brilliant but I wouldn't pay 35 quid for 3!

valiumredhead · 18/07/2012 11:56

Do you mean for babies? Yes they are great and very useful, I bought them in packs from Mothercare for about a tenner iirc.

suedpantsoffem · 18/07/2012 12:00

I just cut up old sheets or used tea-towels!
However I would probably have used muslin ones if given them as a present.

crazynell · 18/07/2012 12:10

didn't someone on here mention these from Boots as being good value?

TheNightWatch · 18/07/2012 12:21

Is it because they are organic they are dear?

redrubyshoes · 18/07/2012 12:23

I always buy the Boots ones for anyone I know who has just had a baby, they are so useful and very cheap.

HipHopOpotomus · 18/07/2012 12:27

I think because they are ORGANIC and LINEN.
Cotton ones are fab for the fraction of the price. I can't imagine the linen ones will be 8 x better.

Having said that I have some cotton/linen bath sheets that I brought circa 2000 that have had LOADS of use and still look good & have lasted very well.

But the muslins are just going to get sick, food and stains on them.

Lovesoftplay · 18/07/2012 12:27

I got some in tesco the other day for about a fiver, they are really useful i think.

Glitterkitten24 · 18/07/2012 12:31

I got about 24 on sale from tesco for about a tenner...£35 for 3 is very expensive.
It's a nice idea but remember they are generally used for mopping up sick, drool ect, and when baby starts solids (like ds has now) they just end up all stained with coloured foods.

Some things it's worth paying for quality, but I'm not sure muslin squares is it!

TheNightWatch · 18/07/2012 12:44

The one I saw being used was to swaddle with and then it was like a cover over the pram

OP posts:
moonbells · 18/07/2012 12:46

That's expensive. I got a pack or two from Mothercare and we still use them, though these days we use them as napkins!

Astr0naut · 18/07/2012 12:52

Depends how messy the baby is too. I wsa never without one to hand with ds, but I've hardly used any with dd.

Think I got all mine from ASda - or ebay.

Floggingmolly · 18/07/2012 12:53

£35 for 3??? Desn't sound right, are you sure they're not the cellular blankets?

AWimbaWay · 18/07/2012 12:56

I know the one's the op means, they're not the normal muslins but extra large one's, I'll find a link, I think they'd be useful personally.

AWimbaWay · 18/07/2012 13:01

Like these, so more of a swaddle than just a muslin square for wiping up mess.

LurkeyLurkerson · 18/07/2012 13:03

The ones in Asda are quite big and are three for £3.50

Waste of money for DD1, never used them
Absolute godsend for pukey DD2!

hazchem · 18/07/2012 13:13

I used my giant ones loads last summer. Also my aunt gave me a pretty one with lovely green spots. I love it because sensible me brought the cheapest (dullest) muslins.

I couldn't justify them for myself but would love them as a present.

lacroixsweetie · 18/07/2012 13:35

Muslins are insanely indispensible but Yes - that's a bonkers amount to spend on something that is going to be used for all kinds of baby spillage. It's lovely to have some luxury items for a new baby but unless they scream quality, then I would pick some up in John Lewis. There are cheaper options but theirs are very soft after washing even when dried over a radiator.

Generally I got through at least 5 a day and they were never ironed again. Ideally you want them to be colour fast, plus tumble dry friendly. If excellent quality linen that will soften with washing and tumbledrying, and you have nothing better to spend your money on then fine, but I would suggest that there are probably nicer things you could buy for the money.

MsOnatopp · 18/07/2012 15:08

If you don't use them much or at all for a baby, they make fab tea-towels [bush] Just give 'em a good boil wash and away you go...

MsOnatopp · 18/07/2012 15:08

hahah bush... I meant Blush of course

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 18/07/2012 15:13

If you want nicer ones then M&S do a pack of 5 for, um either 7 or 11 quid and they are luvverly and soft, so much finer than my mothercare ones

TheNightWatch · 18/07/2012 16:24

These were massive though, as big as cot sheets. It was a French brand. They had sleeping bags made out of the same material as well.

OP posts:
lighthousekeeping · 23/07/2012 01:11

They sound like swaddling sheets.

MrsJohnMurphy · 23/07/2012 01:26

The only child I bought muslins for was ds2, they didn't really get used, because I don't really understand what they are used for Blush. £35 for 3 seems mental, even if they are used for swaddling, actual swaddling blankets wouldn't be as dear. I always used a brushed cotton top sheet for swaddling myself, probably about a fiver for 2.

For pukey times, I always found the good old fashioned bib a bit more useful than a muslin, actually fits round the neck , and well, you know catches the sick, maybe bibs are now frowned upon, I haven't a clue.

If you fancy some mega muslins, there's these: www.bigmuz.com
