Root touch up, only lasts 3 weeks?

I switched to root touch up recently and thought it was pretty good. However the greys need redoing in 3 weeks? Is this normal?!
Doesn't help that my hair is dark brown so grey shows quickly. Am washing it twice a week so not excessive.
Is there anything better? Or do I resign myself to a three weekly dyeing??

I got to that point of dying hair so often that I gave into the grey. Now free of those endless hours and expense of the hairdressers.

I had a rich friend who had her blonde hair re-touched at the hairdressers every 9 days.

I'm blonde and have my roots done every 4 weeks. Friend s hairdresser thought so 'mates rates' Grin. I went grey late teens (now 26) so need to have it covered. I went brown for a while but found I was doing my roots every week!! The blonde helps hide it a bit better. Really is a PITA!

I'm the same (very dark hair) and yes, sadly it does mean doing it every 3-4 weeks Sad.

My main dye (every 8 weeks) takes 2 boxes of the stuff such is the ginormity of my hair.

Still, I would do it every other day rather than go with the grey.

I have begun using root touch up in between salon visits and think it is great! Did it on Sunday and my colour looks totally refreshed. Yes, it fades after about three weeks, but it is a quick fix that enables me to cut down on appointments and tide me over if I haven't got time or childcare.

Ok so it looks like I just have to stick with it. Is a pain but no way am I going grey!

Is the problem that it's growing out or that it's fading after 3 weeks? I don't know if you saw my post on another thread about Castings hair colour but I was voicing my concerns to a hairdresser friend of mine who specialises in colour and she advised me to mix a medium brown (ie. without any other tones - you may need a dark brown) with the tone of my choice 50/50. If you use, for example, a reddish brown colour then the red tone has some transparency so your greys will show reddish and fade more quickly. If you put a plain brown base in there it gives more coverage. She also suggested leaving the dye on for half an hour. I used Castings last time and did this. It's only been a week so can't tell yet what the 'fade rate' will be but the coverage is a lot better. You can do root touch ups with any home dye, you just need to buy a tinting brush.

I second what Branchingout says. I think its brilliant stuff, it gives me about another 3 weeks before i have to go back to the salon. And there's no faffing about with shades, plain old medium brown works for me. And, my hairdresser just thinks i get a really long time out of my colour!

daimbardiva · 17/07/2012 14:35

This sounds exactly what I need before I bankrupt myself at the salon - what brand is it??

BranchingOut · 18/07/2012 12:53

Clairol Nice and Easy is the one I use - it is 'multi tonal' so supposed to blend with other popular shades.

£4.28 x 3 packs = £12.84. If each pack tops up your colour for about 3 weeks, then that is 9 weeks when your hair does not need colouring, so you 'save' one salon appointment - about £80 around my way.
