Why do tweenies hate "nice" clothes?

I have none of my own but happily spend dress my three DN's. I honestly get why they politely asked me to stop sending them Boden clothed but I found a great Swedish clothes brand that had a fab sale and the text I got back " please don't waste your money, those clothes don't fit us but, you can take us to Holister/Next/Primark when you visit us next oh, and we don't wear White Company anymore either" bloody hell!

They just want to choose their own clothes, I expect, and peer pressure is an incredibly powerful force! How old are they?

germyrabbit · 15/07/2012 00:27

send them american apparel stuff that is much cooler than hollister crap Grin

TheNightWatch · 15/07/2012 00:27

9, 10 and twelve I can't remember been like that. Then again we only had Tammy Girl.

My 9 year old dresses like an extra from Little House on the Prairie. I don't know where she gets it from. Her favorite dress is a tartan smocked one with a navy blue velvet Peter-pan collar.

They wouldn't fit into American Apparel!! Beleive me I looked, I saw, I sent and the answer was "I'm not wearing those clothes, I'll look
Like Cher Lloyd" whoever she might be.

Peer pressure.

I can't even predict what my own DDs (9 and 11) like to wear any more, let alone DNs. They sure as hell won't be seen dead in Boden, or anything pink/printed/frilled/sequinned/flared.

Tis a minefield......

They get so much pleasure out of shopping for clothes which is why they prefer to get clothes vouchers or cash. Why not take them shopping with you for their presents?

BellaVita · 15/07/2012 08:52

Because they are clothes that you want them to wear rather than what they want to wear. I would class Boden as "sensible". I used to hate being made to wear sensible clothes at that age.

TheNightWatch · 15/07/2012 11:47

I only see them three times a year. Thats why I send. I stopped the Boden malarky last year when even I realised it was overpriced tat. Luckily they arent into girly, sparkling clothes. How do they know about Holister when they dont even have one in their town?

Im seeing them next month. Ive spoke to the eldest and she said the clothes I sent were "fussy" and, can they go Converse shopping? that sounds like a plan. When I asked her last year if she wanted me to bring her some Converse back from America she turned her nose up and now she is gagging for them!!!

As others say, peer pressure and a desire to fit in plays a huge part.
DD is 8. I love Boden type look for her but realise those days are now gone when she came home from a non uniform day complaining that' no one else wears clothes like these'.
Most recently I decided to take her with me and let her have more input. She likes next. Boyfriend style jeans with colourful belts, colourful t-shirts and vests, denim shorts which she wears with leggings, hoodies etc...
She also got some pink converse. And some gladiator style sandals from clarks.
Surprisingly she also picked a really lovely Autograph by M&S retro print dress.
From now on I will take her with me and let her have her say. Saves the battles.

I usually get DH to get Hollister etc in the USA when he goes over there on business as these are much cheaper.

TheNightWatch · 15/07/2012 18:52

Oh, I know. It's a complete rip off here.
