How often do you clear out your wardrobe?

About an hour ago I decided that a clearout was needed in my wardrobe, sad I know on a Saturday night!
I too everything out and dumped it on the bed and am regretting my decision bigtime! I really need to clear out, there's alsorts of shite in there, have made a resolution to stop buying crap and I have been pretty good so just want to do a sort and throw out the rubbish.

So how often do you S and B ladies do a massive clearout and where do you start????
Motivation please.......

I did this last weekend! Excepting our first baby soon and needed to make enough space to clear out the spare room. I got DP to help me because he is roofless when throwing things away. Decided that if I hadn't worn it in the last 12 months I'm never going to wear it and it had to go. Ended up with 3 bin bags full!

I still had clothes left from my mid teens; I'm 25 Blush

Ruthless Blush

bluebump · 14/07/2012 20:37

Did it last week whilst in quarantine with my chicken pox infested child. I had 5 carrier bags of stuff that I took to the charity bin in the end...then went shopping in the sales and filled some of the gaps! Grin

malteaserbunny · 14/07/2012 20:40

Hmmmm the sales, maybe I will reward myself if I can fill a couple of bin bags!

I do it twice a year, spring and autumn. I try and sell any good quality items and give the rest to charity.

lupo · 15/07/2012 08:02

I do this quite regularly, love a streamlined wardrobe. For the past few years I have only bought things I really love or need, and clearout when I swop from winter to summer and also have a look evey couple of months to get rid of old items. I then ebay or charity shop and replace with new items. Makes getting dressedin the morning much easier.

openerofjars · 15/07/2012 08:10

You make 4 piles: Oxfam, fabric recycling bin at the tip, keep & wear, archive unwearables.

If it's too shabby to give to Oxfam, you may not keep it for wearing. Archive unwearables is for things you really can't throw out for sentimental reasons, like the horrible old t-shirt you gave birth to your firstborn in, for example.

If you do eBay, you can have a 5th pile for that.

chickydoo · 15/07/2012 08:19

Lupo
I'm a bit like you, I'm a constant wardrobe clearer. A bit OCD with it.
I have a triple wardrobe, it's not that full as I'm constantly getting rid of stuff.
I know how many jumpers & cardis I have, everything is in colour order. Shoes are in a rack at the back, swimwear & shorts & holiday stuff in a box at the back.
I like to see what I have, & am able to put outfits together reasonably quickly as everything is accessible.
What a sad life Confused

I do one every other month and then a major clear out each season. Like others, I have a family/eBay pile, charity shop pile, keep and try to work in pile and stuff I wear a lot.

I sort the clothes I'm keeping by item then colour (so going out tops are separate to day wear), make a pile of good quality things someone I love may want or I can eBay, always have big charity pile of high st stuff I won't sell and then a pile of things I like but don't wear. I move these to a specific part of my wardrobe and look through regularly to see if I fancy wearing any of it. If I don't it goes in the next cull.

FixMyTeeth · 15/07/2012 12:34

Frequently. I don't keep anything that I have not worn for 2 years.

It gets Ebayed or charity shop but almost always Ebay.

I keep some knitwear in chest of drawers, and other larger pieces on hangers in wardrobe ( tunics etc.)

Things that are rarely worn- shorts, summer skirts etc- are on top shelf just folded up.
I don't have many clothes and what I do have is worn a lot, or sold if it's been a " mistake" buy.

noddyholder · 15/07/2012 12:50

I had a massive clearout about a year ago but don't think it was enough. I really wear about a third of my stuff and the rest I cling to 'in case' Hmm.Think when we move I will have another go and really get rid of all the unwearables

mirpuppet · 15/07/2012 13:13

I'm also in the not often enough camp. Wish I could do it more but I have problems letting go. I see an item and then I wear it for a week or two and then it gets to stay in my wardrobe.

I'm trying to get more choosy about what i buy as I know I have problems letting go.

jalopy · 15/07/2012 13:29

Every year I have a big clear out. Then I put it all back in again.

Itdidntworkout · 15/07/2012 14:38

I do it twice a year.

I make sure that before I put away the old seasons clothes, I have everything dry cleaned and then vacuum pack.

I make sure that I have an outfit for all types of events: funeral, wedding, girls night out. You need to get the basics right. A flattering pair of trousers, I well cut shirt, immaculate pair of heels (no scuffs) etc.

For autumn/ winter I usually stick to three colours. For me it's olive, burgundy and mustard. All the colours work well together, I can mix and match roll necks/ gilets/ jackets etc.

MsOnatopp · 15/07/2012 18:57

Itdidntworkout I NEED you! I don't have enough clothes or enough money to do that anyway but oh if I did. I would so want your help! :o

QueenMaeve · 15/07/2012 19:46

Very, very rarely. If cheaper stuff gets washed out I put it in the recycle bin, but most things I hold onto. My mum was the same, I have lots of her vintage clothes. I always think things do come back into fashion and usually after I've got rid of something I'll immediately want to wear it.

doinmummy · 15/07/2012 20:05

I find it helps to have a friend with me when I do it. Get a couple of glasses of wine and some chocolate and prepare to be ruthless. I would have hung onto a knee length multi coloured mohair jumper from the 80's if it hadn't been for my friend persuading me that it really would not come back into fashion.

Tiago · 15/07/2012 20:08

Not very often. I'm still wearing clothing I bought almost 7 years ago. I only get rid of stuff as and when I find it (a) doesn't fit anymore or (b) develops holes.

Itdidntworkout · 15/07/2012 22:30

MsOnatopp, I bet you already have the clothes in your wardrobe.

  1. Go through your wardrobe and put things into piles, assess what you have. Throw away anything that doesn't fit.
2.Do alterations to hems, jackets immediately.
  1. Look for gaps in your wardrobe. For me, it's a tweed skirt with skinny brown roll neck for everyday and I'm looking for a claret velvet jacket to wear with black trousers in the evening.
  2. Decide what colour you and wear only colours from that palette. I'm autumn.
  3. When folding tops, use a thin plastic chopping board. Place it on the back of your garment, fold over the arms, flip the bottom over and remove it from the top. All your clothes will be one size.
  4. Plan what you are going to wear each day, get it out the night before.
  5. Polish your shoes weekly and have them resoled.
  6. Invest ain a good coat and it will last you 5+ years.
Bonsoir · 16/07/2012 07:51

I weed my wardrobe a couple of times a year and get rid of the things that I either haven't worn for ages (and are unstylish or don't fit), or have just worn out.

I have a really big walk-in wardrobe/dressing room and most of my clothes are on hangers. I do think it is much easier to manage clothes that are hanging rather than clothes that are folded.

BellaVita · 16/07/2012 08:05

I clear out summer and winter

Itdidntworkout · 16/07/2012 11:33

Bonsoir, I'm very jealous of your dressing room/ walk in wardrobe. Can you post a picture please? Grin
