Can you recommend false eyelashes for beginners ?

I've always been quite anti the idea of false lashes (memories of seeing my gran in terrible spidery contraptions!)
Things must have moved on since then, as I've seen a few people lately with very natural looking ones - better than my efforts with mascara. My own lashes are quite short and sparse so it's difficult to apply mascara well without it clogging.

Any recommendations for lashes which are easy to apply, won't fall off (!) and won't feel weird? I'm a bit squeamish about the idea and if you'd told me a few years back that I'd be considering false lashes I'd have laughed in your face. But it seems there are some good products out there so I'm manning up and want to go for it! Also any tips for applying them and taking them off (does it hurt?) most welcome
TIA

These ones are very easy to apply as they have tabs at each side to help you guide them on. I use false lashes all the time and haven't found much difference between cheapy ones and expensive though. I think as long as you have a good glue it doesn't matter. Duo is a good one.

lauratheexplorer · 14/07/2012 09:59

I agree with the statement that if you have good glue it doesn't matter. The cheap sets come eith horrible glue. I buy £1 lashes from Primark, Poundland and eBay but use Eyelure glue from an old individual eyelash pack as that is what holds them on all day for me. If you're a bit worried about them coming off I often wait until they're dry and apply a thin strip of glue over the eyelash weft and slightly on to the eyelid too.

MooMinCow · 14/07/2012 10:08

agree - use decent glue and wait a minute or two for it to go tacky before applying. Lisa Eldridge & Pixiwoo on YouTube have fab tutorials on how to apply lashes.

I would buy some cheap ones and just practice, practice, practice TBH. I find it easier to use tweezers to apply, but with time you will find what works for you. Oh and don't be afraid to trim them as they're easier to apply if not too long. good luck!

oh and the Ardell Demi ones are good for beginners (they even do a starter kit with an applicator)

i was never into false lashes but for my wedding, i thought i would go for it. I paid at my local Spa to have the lash extensions which lasted about a month in total (some do fall out after time). Lasted the wedding and honeymoon before i pulled the rest of, but you can pay for infills. cost about £50.00 but a real treat! great if you have a few nights out and weddings to attend over the summer!

cocolepew · 14/07/2012 10:28

Stupid question alert, how many times can you use them?

MooMinCow · 14/07/2012 10:32

I can get about 4-5 uses out of each pair if handled gently! after removing I pick off the old glue (oddly satisfying Grin) then wipe with damp cotton wool or cleansing wipe and bung back in their tray. Admittedly this is often late into the day after the night before Blush

Thanks Smile

I can't wear a full set of false lashes - instead I buy the individual ones and pop just a few on each eye. Always get compliments whenever I bother to do it for the odd night out! It enhances without being obvious and I find much easier to apply than a normal full set of lashes.

MooMinCow · 14/07/2012 11:03

Cali - I agree, the individual ones are easier to apply - better for daytime or natural looks IMO

Itsgottabebags · 14/07/2012 11:35

One of the poundshops sell a fasle eyelash applicator gizmo if that is of any help.

HappyGirlNow · 14/07/2012 12:19

I've occasionally tried full eyelashes before and they were ok but they attach to eyelid so noticeable and only last a day. I also found them hard to apply.

I've also had eyelash extensions at a salon and while they're good they're expensive and mines sometimes twisted round looking stupid and I had to wait on an appointment to get them sorted.

In the last couple of months I've discovered these individual lashes and they're amazing! Smile - I LOVE them! They last for days, attach to your own lashes and look more natural and your lashes look AMAZING! It's quicker to get ready as there's no faffing with mascara and eyelash curlers, I just maybe add one fine layer of mascara once I've applied them. If one falls off, no probs just replace it and if you want to remove them you can buy remover that gets them off in seconds.

Honestly, wish I'd discovered them years ago! Check out Lisa Eldridge tuition for individual lashes and with a tiny bit of practice your lashes will be fabulous - I'm not on commission, honest! Blush

Ps they come in short/medium/large. As my lashes are naturally shirt I dont go OTT and I use mediums for the outer half and shorts towards the inner half. I don't want folk to know I'm wearing falsies! But you can also go longer for a more dramatic effect..

Another vote for individual lashes. I bought the eye lure ones from Boots and they were so much easier to out on than strips.

cocolepew · 15/07/2012 00:35

Having a google and some individual ones stay on for weeks!

I'm off to Sallys.

CointreauVersial · 15/07/2012 00:51

The false eyelashes I bought came with black glue - it went everywhere, and I looked like I'd been punched in the face. It made such a mess I had to abandon the lashes, clean everything off, and I've not dared try them since.

Is that normal, or can you buy clear glue?

And do you put false lashes on after you do your make-up, or before?

cocolepew · 15/07/2012 00:53

I saw black glue on the Boots website. Its usually clear.
I used to have lovely long lashes but the bloody menopause has made them start to fall out. I'm going to give the falsies ago to let my poor lashes recover.

MooMinCow · 15/07/2012 01:21

Cointreau - most glue is clear - I recommend the Duo glue, a bit pricey but much better at holding lashes in place

Coco - my lashes were thinning out, bit have been using the Revitalash for 3-4 weeks and it really has helped. only use falsies for nights out when wearing smoky eyeshadow.

HappyGirlNow · 15/07/2012 10:00

The black glue is meant to add to the intenseness but unless you are a real pro it only highlights any errors and can look splodgy. I use clear.

I used to buy from Sally's but find Amazon better. Here's what I get :

Eyelashes which I also buy in 'short' and clear glue and remover
