So disappointed with my facial...is it me?

Wondering if I can get some skin advice from you lot.

I have very congested skin at the moment, lots of clogged pores, giving me attractive bumps on my chin and up the side of my face. sigh. plus a couple of break outs, urgh.

Having got back on the diet wagon I thought I could justify treating myself to a deep cleanse facial and am so disappointed. If anything my skin looks worse, and I feel like all she did was squeeze a couple of spots. so couple of questions...

  • was I robbed?!
  • any tips for dealing with all the congestion?
  • if / when I can save up for another facial, what should I be asking for...or are they all a con?

thanks

I hate facials, get red and pimply skin after. I prefer to lie in a sauna for 20 mins!

CarpeJugulum · 13/07/2012 21:19

Facials do nothing for me either.

Second a sauna - and then I go for a nice swim in chlorinated water - next few days are icky, but then everything calms down.

I think often your skin can seem worse afterwards as it brings some of the crap in your pores to the surface or something.
Until you can save up for another how about try8ing a face mask - Lush do some nice ones for about £5-6.

Can I recommend a home facial? I use scantuary deep thermal mask once a week and a good exfoliating scrub then tone and massage face and use a face oil or good moisturiser (at the moment using l occiatane immortelle ) found using it has declogged my skin

How much did you pay? Where did you go? What is your skin type - combination?

There are so many treatments available now and some of them are very very good and are absolutely not a waste of money (I'm a trained beauty therapist and I have regular facials). BUT not all beauty therapists are any good and not all salons are either. You need to find someone you trust and who cares about your result like I have (have been going to her for 4 years).

I have alpha beta peels and I also love microdermabrasion. I personally believe that you need to have quite specific deep exfoliation as you get older. Just having more products put on the skin (like they probably do in clarins etc) is not going to brighten it at all and will clog it up. Dead skin cells (and therefore dull skin) are partly what makes you age. A deep exfoliation will also help the skin absorb any prescribed products much more effectively.

I can't see your skin so it would be difficult for me to know what I'd recommend for you but for people with a lot of congestion there is a germicidal treatment called direct high frequency which uses ozone. I have found that this got rid of spots that I had.

Don't give up. Today the most effective treatments are much more accessible to all, not just the rich and famous as it was at one time.

I never felt any benefit from facials until I tried Clarins Tri Active facial. It really has made such a difference to my skin - much less prone to hormonal outbreaks, fine lines disappearing and skin tone much improved. My skin glows for a week or so afterwards and I have them every 6 weeks.

BigusBumus · 13/07/2012 23:03

I personally hate facials, paying £50+ for something that makes no positive difference. Rather have a couple of sessions of gel nails. At least you can look at what you've paid for for a couple of weeks.

Having said that, my 67 year old mum has a monthly facial and it works wonders with her very dry, liney, mature skin. You can really tell when she's had one.

thank you all for you replies. It was a dermologica deep cleanse from a fairly reputable salon (that did an AMAZING job on my brows and came recommended.) there was a load of product, a steam and spot squeeze...then a zappy thing and ultrasound

Not sure how meaningful the cost is - 74 dollars, but prices are weird here in central qld! bananas can cost a fortune or nothing, decent haircut very reasonable!

Maybe dermalogica doesn't suit your skin (or the products they used)? After extraction your skin will not look great for a few days anyway. It's maybe a case of finding a treatment you personally like. Everyone tends to like something different ime.

putyourhatonsweetie · 14/07/2012 10:06

perhaps it will be better in a couple of days then Grin

I used to have their power exfoliation, I always refuse extraction though.
