Come tell me what foundation to buy

So the old faithful Elizabeth Arden flawless finish is nearly done and every time I think I will try something different but invariably end up back where I started.

I have combination skin - dry cheeks and oily t zone and sometimes acne and will be the big 40 this year. Like good coverage as I have crap skin bloody parents so any suggestions most welcome!

I have crap skin and have just converted to Estee Lauder Double Wear. It's very good coverage and really lasts (doesn't go shiny and slip off). I use my fingers to apply it as it 'sets' quite quickly and is hard to blend with a brush. I think if you go to a counter they will give you samples to take home and try before you buy.

Lozislovely · 13/07/2012 13:53

I second ELDW! I converted last week from Clinique after MN reviews!! It really does stay put even on my t zone, though I do a little touch up with translucent powder at lunchtime. The colour choices are really good as well to the point that the foundation actually looks like my skin now rather than an orange Grin

ElizaDoMore · 13/07/2012 14:00

I got a sample of ELDW Light Intensity %232 from Debenhams the other week. Used it for a wedding and I loved it!

Charliefox · 13/07/2012 14:01

Yep, Estee Lauder Double Wear - tis fab.

ElizaDoMore · 13/07/2012 14:01

Don't know where all those numbers came from - it's Intensity 2.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/07/2012 17:04

I'm using aldi foundation in the palest shade at the moment, it's one of the few that havent made my skin orange.

I have oily t zones and drier cheeks. It gives me a decent coverage for any spots with a bit of concealer but doesnt settle on them and make them more obvious.

I did buy it thinking it would be rubbish and kept the reciept in case it had to go back.

loflo · 13/07/2012 17:50

Ta Smile don't think we have Estée Lauder in our crapBoots but next time I am in a decent shop will have a look. We do however have an Aldi Blush so will try there for one to keep me going!

just get some samples - even the ones i haven't been keen on have kept me going at work for a while...

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/07/2012 17:57

Sometimes you can buy samples of make up on ebay, but you would have to research the colour you'd need.

I think foundations so hard to get right.

40notTrendy · 13/07/2012 17:58

I have to be a voice of dissent. I have same skin and found double wear unpleasant. It felt heavy and cake-y. But I'm No help really as I'm still searching for the ultimate foundation. Clinique ones are ok but I still get shiny. They feel much nicer on though.

Cartoonjane · 13/07/2012 18:00

I have just used a sample of Dior Forever and thought it was lovely. Good coverage but silky texture and looked smooth and light on. I am going to buy some.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/07/2012 18:09

I didnt get on with double wear either, I looked too made up.

lauratheexplorer · 13/07/2012 18:21

Estee Lauder's Double Wear is fantastic but too heavy for some. Rimmel Wake Me Up is a fantastic cheaper alternative.

cocolepew · 13/07/2012 18:25

I got a sample od DW but thought it was too heavy. I really like Revlon Photo Ready. Max Factor liquid minerals is also very good.

I bought the Chanel one after everyone raving about it on here. It was awful.

emsyj · 13/07/2012 18:30

I hated Double Wear the first time I tried it, aged 21. I love it now (aged 32) as my skin is so vile I need the 'emulsion paint' effect. It is the heaviest coverage foundation I've ever used but I love looking very made-up (see profile pic Blush) so I like it!

I believe the 'Light' version is good too. Have heard fantastic things about the Dior Forever one, I've got that on my list to try next!

PerryCombover · 13/07/2012 19:08

Don't poo poo try the maybelline dream Liquid mousse
Excellent

QueenieLovesEels · 13/07/2012 19:34

Mac studio fix.

amybaby123 · 13/07/2012 19:37

Use a primer (Arbonne have an amazing one) before putting foundation on - makes it stay on and keeps your make-up in place. Estee Lauder is very good and so too is one of the Chanel ones. Primer really does help though!

Eliza22 · 13/07/2012 19:42

Estée Lauder Double Wear Light.

A Godsend! I have good skin at 49 so, just a little of this sorts me out. And it stays put!

goingdownhill · 13/07/2012 19:52

I really like Revlon Colour Stay. It gives a great coverage for problem skin and stays put for ages. It is also only about £12 so great value for money.

ggirl · 13/07/2012 19:58

I haoily slick in t-zone and dry elsewhere. I have tried EL all sorts and chanel and clinique and cheaper brands liek revlon/bourjois/.They either disappeared in a few hrs or like EL looked like face cake.

most tinted moisturisers slick off me as well

the only one that works for me is bare minerals matte foundation with mac spf 50 prep and primer underneath

TenMinutesLate · 13/07/2012 20:20

I'm with Queenie....Mac studio fix in liquid....my face in a bottle; if I can't get to House of Fraser then Revlon do a Photofix (or something like that!) range with is pretty good x

Tried mooooooouse ranges but coverage just not good enough....

emsyj · 13/07/2012 22:37

MAC Studio Fix has similar coverage - I used to use that before switching to Double Wear (largely because I got a better colour match with DW). It has more 'slip' and is easier to blend so if you find the DW too drying it's worth trying - probably worth getting some samples of it, MAC will give you a week's worth at counter so you can try and see what you like for your own skin. I find it needs more powdering than the DW and isn't as long-lasting, but my skin is very oily so no doubt depends on your skin type.

I also find the MAC colours very yellow (both the N and C) and the Estee Lauder ones have more neutral/pink shades, so your skin tone might make the decision for you - I cannot get a good colour match in MAC, their shades just don't work for me.

QuinnFabray · 13/07/2012 23:22

ELDW can look non-cakey and quite natural if it's applied well. You need to use a primer first ( I love MAC spf50, that's great for oily skin ) and then you need a tiny amount and apply it with your fingers not a brush. Probably half the amount of what I use of other foundations. It took me a while to figure out how to apply it so it looks nice, but now I love it.

Shiseido liquid sun protection foundation is also brilliant for longevity and oil control. Very light but excellent coverage.

Oodle · 14/07/2012 09:11

Best ever foundation is Futurist by Estée Lauder. Rumours they are discontinuing it ( why oh why) so get some quick! Quite pricey but def worth it.
