Bra fitting - are we still doing the measuring under and over and taking away etc thingy?

Because I have just done a calculation online and I have come out a 38d - when I have only 32-34 H and J in my drawers, and although none fit me perfectly (I have lost a little weight) NONE of them are 2-3 sizes too small in the cup and 4 - 5 cup sizes too big - in fact the last time I got my boobs into a D cup I think I was still a teenager...

I have to find a bra to go under a dress for a wedding and have not bought a new bra in ages, the current one I have has no writing on the label anymore Blush so I am trying to work out where to start when ordering from Bravissimo, I haven't been able to get a good fit from there in ages as have to order such a range of sizes to get it right, then sending them back and getting new ones, such a faff...

Just want to get a starting point - or get measured, the last time I did it was House of Frazer, they were rubbish, came away with a bra that seemed to fit but was miles too small in the cups, think that was a 32J...

Does anyone have a link to any good websites for figuring it out?

Whatkatydid has a video tutorial showing how to properly fit bras.

gymboywalton · 12/07/2012 19:54

go to a shop-here do you live?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/07/2012 19:59

Measure under bust add nothing

Add over bust

Each 1" different = 1 cup size

Same over and under = AA

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/07/2012 19:59

Add = measure (over bust)

I live in kent, we have Marks and Sparks which is terrible, HoF, then next nearest is bluewater, and then maybe lakeside, not sure which shops are best. I know there is rigby and peller, but I don't think I can afford them! I don't think I have ever had a well fitting bra.

Whatkatydid? what's that? on youtube?

I can do the good fit thing - I know what it looks like, but I kind of want a starting point so I can order s few from Bravissimo in the right range.

Will try that itsall - makes me a 32/34 G/H, which might be about right.

Also in my OP I make myself sound minging - obv have more than one bra! have about a zillion, none fit very well....

I need a balconette I think, the dress is square necked and is currently showing bra at the corners in my Freya bra.

John Lewis and Bravissimo are spoken of highly on here for fitting. Don't know if there is either where you are, but worth a look...

missmakesstuff · 12/07/2012 20:45

Not close to us, Bravissimo are great but not many shops. John Lewis maybe, one nearish I could try.

Have just ordered a load of sale bra's from Bravissimo in a range from 32-43 G and H, hopefully will give me a start! Just have left it a bit late and it's all the waiting for them to arrive and then exchanging that is annoying.

Whatkatiedid.com/bra-sizing
Sorry, can't do links on iPod.
It's a lingerie shop in West London.

No idea for adult fitting but took DD for her first bra to Debenhams and they only measured under the breast and then took it from there, checking bras that she tried on for comfort and fit and explaining how they should fit and advised not to just assume one given size will always fit, as often different makes come up differently sized.

marriednotdead · 12/07/2012 21:11

Let me know which ones you ordered and I'll tell you which ones fit to size/are worth keeping or exchanging Wink

missmakesstuff · 12/07/2012 21:38

married I am looking to be impressed at your encyclopedic knowledge of Bravissimo's catalogue! I won't ask how you know - unless you have all of them...

I ordered Rococo charm bra, tango plunge (good reviews but have a feeling I ordered once already and it didn't fit right) and a Demi Diva - looks lovely and the right shape etc, but we shall see!

Go on then!

hula will try debs, actually one where I work but not much chance of getting out of work before they close ever..but yes, actually getting fitted is best, I think they have a range of larger ones? I actually think it will be easier now than before I had DD as I was a 30 J-K! body has expanded and boobs deflated...Sad

marriednotdead · 13/07/2012 20:29

Tango plunge is quite tight in the band but a pretty good fit. Demi Diva fits more or less to size, Rococco Charm comes up a bit small in the cup but bigger in the band.

I have a feeling they are all going to be a bit small in the cup after your last comment but I'll wait for you to get them and see... Wink

missmakesstuff · 13/07/2012 20:47

Thanks - will see how I go, that will be really helpful when I have tried them, at least I will know what to try size wise next. The Tango had good reviews, the demi is really pretty too, although I forgot to order briefs so will have to do an exchange for the briefs I want to go with the bra if I find one, thus beginning another sizing nightmare...

Do you think they are all pretty much of a half cup? I need to not have them showing with a square neckline...

It is just such a nightmare - what is so hard about just making a 32 band size actually 32 inches in size? I mean seriously, do they not make enough money from us to buy a tape measure? I can understand cups being different as it depends on the band size and style etc.

I am just glad the weather is so shit and I am so fat as I don't even have to consider buying bikinis etc, can't face it!

marriednotdead · 13/07/2012 21:02

Tango plunge not a half cup but fairly low. The Boudoir Beau is quite good under a square neckline if the other styles don't suit.

There are no Demi Diva bottoms left in the red...

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/07/2012 21:43

Rococo and demi are both very low and square - on me the cup almost comes out in a straight line with my armpit (hard to explain) but I don't think there are many square necks they would show under.

missmakesstuff · 14/07/2012 08:39

Both sound great. will wait and see!

Who am I kidding anyway, as if I am ever going to have nicely matching Bra and Knickers anyway just my usual cheap primark stretchy massive granny pants

If you ring Bravissimo to order, they will help you to get the right size. Their sales ladies know which bras come up big/small etc. they are really helpful IMO.
