bored with shaving legs

I've bought the Veet easy wax roller thing it was on sale Has anyone tried this? Is it worth it or should I return it and try something else first?

Shaving is a faff, veet cream wasn't as effective as shaving. In the past, I've tried cold wax strips which seem to work but HURT and left a sticky film...

Oh, this is for my legs btw, and possibly underarms (though the Veet worked a bit better there)

I reccomend an epilator for your legs. Don't use on.the underarms. You won't be able to put themdown for a week. bitter experience

sue52 · 11/07/2012 22:13

I second an epilator though I am quite curious about the NoNo thing I have seen advertised.

CandyCrate · 11/07/2012 22:16

Argh epilators hurt like hell! I know you are meant to get used to it, but the back of the thigh... jesus I couldnt take it!

If you find a magical answer please let me know. I hate shaving. V sensitive skin so it irritates me.

Gettheetoanunnery · 11/07/2012 22:20

Sorry to hijack op but to the posters who vote epilators, does your leg hair get thinner after you've used it for a while? When I shave I get quite a lot of growth within 24 hours and I'd like to use another method that lasts longer.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/07/2012 22:21

Wimps!

Epilators are fine on legs, because the skin is flatter and you can hold it taut.

I use a hot wax for underarms (I find it 'opens' up the pores/hair follicles.

Many years ago I used a roll on ( it went in a lilac coloured electric heating base but refills were expensive and it took ages to heat)

Cold wax strips and sugaring don't work for me.

NADS No-Heat works pretty well.

Veet Microwavable (with the strips) works best for me.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/07/2012 22:23

Getthee - yes the hairs do get thinner and finer.

I've never had 6 weeks hair free that they promise but much better than shaving.
And I even have bald patches on my legs now Grin

fragola · 11/07/2012 22:26

I found my epilator in a drawer last night, I hadn't used it for 4 years. I had a good epilate and it was ace. Satisfyingly painful, then horribly plucked chickeny, but silky smooth this morning. I'm just trying to remember why it ended up in a drawer for four years. I think it may have been something to do with ingrowing hairs...

fragola · 11/07/2012 22:28

Getthee, when I used my epilator regularly the hairs definitely got finer, with quite a few bald patches. They gradually returned to normal over the wilderness years though.

DonkeyTeapot · 11/07/2012 22:30

I have been wondering about that NoNo thing too...

I recently tried an epilator for the first time, it was pretty painful, I have to say. Maybe I shouldn't have tried it for the first time on my bikinin line.

I tried home waxing strips recently, when I pulled, the strip came off, the wax stayed on my skin, and not a single hair was removed. Ace!

zipzap · 11/07/2012 22:36

I've been wondering about those light thingys - that seem to burn the hairs away so they gradually get thinner (oversimplifies hugely!) but am always put off by the thought that if the light is that strong then is there any risk of cancer in years to come - or any other downside come to that.

They are scarily expensive at the moment but if they are as good as they say then it's tempting, just not enough at the moment at that price.

I've used an epilator in the past too - but ended up sticking to shaving - just easier and less painful. and in this weather - wearing trousers lots so I don't need to shave as much Blush

ujjayi · 11/07/2012 22:39

I always thought shaving was a faff until I recently discovered the Spa Breeze razors. They have two strips above and below the blade which lubricate the skin so no need for shaving creams. I have very dry skin on my legs but found that these left my skin really soft and smooth whereas conventional shaving cream dries them out.

thenightsky · 11/07/2012 22:44

Epilator all the way.

Legs feel tingly but in a satisfying way.

Armpits... grit yer teeth for the first swipe. After that you are concentrating so hard on staring in the mirror and angling it get every single hair you forget the pain.

And it lasts a week.

DonkeyTeapot · 11/07/2012 22:45

I use the Intuition thing which has a massive block of moisturising stuff on it, meaning you don;t need any gel or anything. Great for legs and underarms, but a bit bulky for nether regions.

MrsMuddyPuddles · 12/07/2012 00:46

Thanks, Ladies. I had though of an epilator, would a cheap one be ok, or am I better off shelling out for a quality one?

There are a lot of bad reviews of the No No on US Amazon:
www.amazon.com/No-Hair-Removal-Unit-Pink/product-reviews/B002LBK5QU

Shame no one's tried the wax thing I bought... might return it and try one of the razors recommended.

Yeah-looks like NoNo is a nono Grin

bruffin · 12/07/2012 01:21

The trick with the epilator is to take a painkiller 15 minutes before.
I have a new expensive epilator which is good for the legs. But the old one I have is better for arm pits.

Pinkflipflop · 12/07/2012 06:35

Phillips lumea is a great option, I love mine!

I got mine in boots a few months ago and haven't looked back.

FlyMeToDunoon · 12/07/2012 11:30

Anymore epilator recommendation? Boots have a third off Braun ones but a simple Phillips or Boots one is still about half the price. I feel drawn to the ones with lights (saddo).

bruffin · 12/07/2012 16:42

I have the one with the light, the braun silk apel wet and dry one. As i said above it is brilliant for legs, but not so good on underarms as it seems to leave a rash which I don't get with my 15 year old phillips, so I use both.

Have a look at the reviews on amazon.

FlyMeToDunoon · 12/07/2012 17:47

Have looked at Amazon and as usual was left as indecisive as ever.
It's probably wisest to get the expensive one.
Isn't it?

Pelicano · 12/07/2012 20:07

I bought a cheap Braun silk epil for beginners (wusses) with only 20 tweezers. It takes ages but is good, however I should've gone for the 40+ treezers for the time factor and I can take the pain.

Underarms done for the first time this week and no probs.

Legs do have some bald patches as I did it a few years ago and then retired the contraption - I think for the ingrowing hair problem also.

I'm off to buy a Lumea when it's on offer again in Boots now.

Wine helps break the pain barrierWink

Yika · 12/07/2012 20:15

I can't shave - regrowth so thick and black you get beard rash if you touch it. Salon wax for best results. Cold home wax is absolutely useless. Might ad well just attempt to epilate with Sellotape. Epilator less painful and you can do it at more regular intervals. Never lessened regrowth much in my case but then legs are very yeti-esque. I'm now getting them zapped with ipl and have good results after 2 sessions.
