Don't pick! Prevention is the only way. You need salicylic acid to remove the dead skin cells that are causing the blackheads, and benzoyl peroxide to dry them up. Try Neutrogena blackhead clearing face scrub, Garnier Pureactive spot clearing toner. This stuff is also good too www.proactiv.co.uk/
Make sure your moisturiser and foundation are non-comodogenic (it will say somewhere on the packaging). I used to have horrible skin and have tried literally everything. The Neutrogena scrub has made a massive difference to my skin. If I don't use it I start to get breakouts again.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 11/07/2012 22:11

Ahh... I don't use moisturiser or foundation. Maybe that's why my skin is so perfect

(I wish)

Exfoliation is the best treatment for blackheads. 2 or 3 times a week and if you are prone to spots, just do the nose area as exfoliation can cause a break out. It works, really, give it a few weeks and you will see a big diffference.

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish with a muslin cloth
or
Philosophy MicroDelivery Peel (Vit C )

I used the strips when they first came out (about 15 years ago they used to put them in magazines when there was an advert). I noticed they pulled the tiny, fine hairs off my skin. I now have tiny dark hairs . Sad

StealthPolarBear · 11/07/2012 22:16

Well I can at least try the hot flannel thing in the morning

JarethTheGoblinKing · 11/07/2012 22:21

Use it like sandpaper SPB Grin

HOT though. While in a hot shower.

catinboots · 11/07/2012 22:21

I use the garnier 3 in 1 face scrub. You can use it as a mask, exfoliater and face wash. I use a mask 1 a week and exfoliate with it everyday. I used to have blackheads on my nose but they have all gone. Prior to using this I used to swear by boots own clay face mask/scrub that they used to sell for about 80p in sachets but they stopped making them a few years ago. It was hell trying to find something to replace it. The garnier face wash is quite expensive at about £6 but lasts for months and months. I also sizzle with Mandelic acid for my permanent pregnancy mask and my pores are now tighter.

ItsaMissTerri · 12/07/2012 00:01

might be worth having a look at the blog called www.beautymouth.com ...she seems to give out really good independent advice on all sorts of skin problems..i just put "blackheads" into the search box and a few blog entries came up

bluecarrot · 12/07/2012 00:01

I was just reading last night that Milk of Magnesia as a face mask overnight worked wonders (original flavour, not mint!)

aquavit · 12/07/2012 11:01

yikes and ouch to all these suggestions, though I'm sure they work - my problem is that I can't exfoliate often because have v sensitive skin. What works for me longterm is using oil - as a cleanser (find muslin cloths a bit harsh but use them v lightly) and also under night cream. Totally counterintuitive but it has really helped my blocked pores without making me red and flaky elsewhere.

Then the occasional scrub for special occasions and super soft skin.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/07/2012 11:43

I always thought that about the scrubs as mine is very sensitive too, but the Lush Angels on Bare Skin is fabulous, use it every morning and my skin loves it. I use an oil based cleanser at night too, Lush Ultrabland, but I'm pretty sure it's the scrub that's really helped as I was using the Ultrabland for a year or so before I started the scrub (was previously using Lush Babyface in the shower, also oil based), the oil cleansers were great for the rest of the skin but it's the scrub that has zapped the pores

ihearthuckabees · 12/07/2012 12:04

What aquavit says. The oil cleansing method has helped my blackheads. I also get spots so use spot cream too, but because I've cleansed using oil, my face doesn't get all dry and flaky.

Oil cleansing is also a lot cheaper than Liza earl etc.

waitingforgodot · 12/07/2012 16:43

thanks everyone

Well at least send me a photograph of them Grin

Ryoko · 12/07/2012 17:18

The Oil Cleansing Method worked for mine, get some medical grade olive oil from a chemist (normally found round the ear wax and foot treatments should be about £2 a bottle).

give your face a rinse with water then massage in some oil and stick a hot cloth over your face for a bit, then wipe your face and repeat the hot cloth thing a few times.

I get spotty so I don't do it that often, strangely I've found the best thing for me to keep blackheads and spots at bay is the following.

OCM 1x a week.
a wet sponge nothing more 6x a week.
Runny honey+sugar 1x a month, scrubbed round and left on for a bit before washing off with a bar of soap.

And I only ear make-up when I leave the house and wash it off with soap and water as soon as I get home.
