Cycling in a maxi dress

I'm off on a holiday where there will be lots of cycling. I also want to wear long dresses/skirts. Is it doable? I'm sure tighter ones can be hitched up right? Will it be a total faff?

Total faff. And you don't want it getting caught in the chain or peddles etc.

Have a nice hol though

glub · 11/07/2012 16:01

thanks. but grr. i want to hear it's possible! anyone?

It is possible, but will make you miserable and is difficult (used to cycle to work wearing midi skirts - even they were difficult enough). Imagine if it rains? Or if it is hot, you will hate it. Wear comfy shorts and trousers while cycling and save your dresses for the evenings?

bigTillyMint · 11/07/2012 16:09

Don't do it, unless it is literally a 5min ride! Wear long shorts if you want something to cover your legs.

Eliza22 · 11/07/2012 16:17

Don't. Just don't. Wear shorts or Capri styleee trews!

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 11/07/2012 16:21

Could you carry off the short onesies that are everywhere?

glub · 11/07/2012 20:30

sorry i've been out and about. oh no :( and i could do onesies/other short things but would rather not when i'm bruised from the kids/travelling or covered in massive mozzie bites

I live in the Netherlands and people cycle in everything. It's currently "pants season" as women are cycling in mini-skirts.

ENormaSnob · 11/07/2012 21:15

Tuck it into your knickers?

TheCraicDealer · 11/07/2012 21:54

I just saw your thread title- it sounds like the start of a reconstruction on 999 with Michael Beurk.

witchwithallthetrimmings · 11/07/2012 22:03

Three things to worry about, modesty, comfort and smell. Many skirts are cyclable in but show a lot of upper and inner thigh, some skirts are just too much faff to get on and off. Actually fine when you are on though. You will sweat though and so may need a change of clothes anyway. I would thus wear a t shirt bikini pants and a sarong to bike in and change once I got off

cinnamongiraffe · 11/07/2012 22:03

I actually did laugh out loud when I read your thread title, sorry Grin.

If it was a straightish maxi you wouldn't be able to move your legs surely and you would fall off. If it was a full skirt you would be fine I should think until the skirt got caught in the spokes.

Would leggings be acceptable in these circumstances? Not on their own obv...

witchwithallthetrimmings · 11/07/2012 22:04

Btw one of my favorite thing to cycle in is a long a line maxi skirt, is just above ankle height

glub · 11/07/2012 22:07

lol at 'pants season'

glub · 11/07/2012 22:12

and thank you witch for giving me hope. you know what i'm going to give it a go (then probably grumble lots, get laughed at and end up ripping it on the way home!).

OP posts:
AlpinePony · 12/07/2012 06:16

I think it depends a lot on the bike. Mine has a big protector over the chain and there's just no way it could get hooked up.

Glittertwins · 12/07/2012 06:45

But you won't be able to stop it getting caught in a wheel though. I ruined a favourite long skirt years ago by wearing it when I rode my bike. It got tangled in the spokes of the rear wheel. Good job the village was dead quiet otherwise it would have been a messier accident. As it was it was only a mangled skirt and mangled pride rather than me mangled under a car.

MrsHoarder · 12/07/2012 07:04

I sometimes cycle in loose knee skirt, but cycle shorts underneath are a necessity. Don't cycle in a maxi dress unless you're not going far and your bike has a skirt guard on the rear wheel.

comixminx · 12/07/2012 07:11

Yy to a skirt guard for city cycling: I cycle in whatever I fancy on my Pashley and it's never a problem, but that's a heavy city bike not v suitable for a cycling trip I'd think!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/07/2012 11:03

Dot do it...I used to cycle to work quite a lot and one day in my wealth of wisdom I wore a skirt...the wind was blowing up it, I got whistled at loads, felt a complete anus and so got off at the nearest sports direct and bought some cropped trousers Grin

Wasnt my finest hour!!

glub · 06/09/2012 13:40

i did it by the way. pants season was fully embraced :D. i hitched it up, twisted and tucked and it was fine

VerityBrulee · 06/09/2012 13:47

Good for you! Don't compromise your style. I read about a woman who runs marathons in dresses and she almost inspired me to take up running Grin

Needabitofsunshine · 06/09/2012 14:13

You can cycle in pretty much anything! Mini skirt season here too...

I´ve cycled in maxi dresses millions of times - hoick up the back and sit on the material (kind of tucked under your bum). Keeps it out of the chain and allows the front to fall down so you´re not flashing your knickers. Mind you, sounds like it´s a cycling country, so no-one will bat an eyelid. They will be cycling in all sorts of clothes, high heels too.
