Jewellery on the beach/at the pool

What do you think? Nothing? or is it better to wear something? I quite like a little pair of earrings and maybe a little necklace. In all the magazines the models are wearing lots of bangles, necklaces, gold hoops in their ears. I'm getting ready to go away on holiday soon and want to look good but I don't want it to look like I'm trying too hard.

If you get sweaty, it tends to seep into leather and can smell.

i would only wear gold or silver jewellery as it's the only things that won't fall apart/dye your skin/get ruined when in contact with water.

I'd wear v. little to be honest as a big statement necklace tanline would be embarrassing.

You are a real person embarking on a holiday rather than a model having some photos taken? Presumably you have no intention of swimming, so won't need to worry about losing anything in the water? Will you be wearing sun tan lotion (please do)? Some types can damage the finish on some cheap jewellery. How much do you like the feel of sand caught under bangles over slightly sun burnt skin?

You'd be better off saving the jewellery for the evenings, or days out, rather than lounging on the beach or by the pool.

Bunbaker · 09/07/2012 08:21

I just wear my wedding ring and save jewellery for the evenings. IMO anything else is a little impractical especially when sun screen and swimming pool/sea water is concerned.

poppedoutforapintofmilk · 09/07/2012 10:40

I just can't be bothered wearing jewellery other than earrings on the beach. If I go out to eat in the evening I'll put on a bracelet but I never take anything valuable or that looks expensive on hols because I think it might attract pickpockets/scammers etc.

monkeysmama · 09/07/2012 11:11

I wear jewellery on holiday but nothing big in the day. I wear the same diamond studs always anyway but usually wear my big white plastic watch during the day instead of my proper one which I save for the evening. I do like a bit of bling though so wear big sunglasses, gold beach bag and gold Havaianas.

Bunbaker · 09/07/2012 11:19

Now, I don't regard being by the pool or on the beach as a fashion parade. I never notice what other people are or aren't wearing. Besides, I can't see very much when I am swimming because I am extremely short sighted.

Vicky08 - I get where you are coming from on this. I look at beachwear photo shoots and think "ooh, glam, love it". However, in reality I have only ever seen one impossibly chic Italian woman work this look (head to toe Missoni, polished & perfect, no kids).

Like the others have said, I tend to think that the reality will be far from glam - sun lotion leeching colour from metals, metals getting hot and leaving very bizarre tan lines or worse burning your skin.

For me, the secret to looking chic on holiday is to pare down to the bare essentials: well-cut bikini, stylish sunglasses (the bigger the better to protect from wrinkles), leather flip flops & a good beach bag. Slick your hair back (into a bun if long enough) with leave-in conditioner or sun protection lotion (I love the Kerastase version).

ujjayi · 09/07/2012 11:27

Oh and if you want some bling, why not think about metallic details (beads or surface pattern) on your bikini and cover up?

Vicky08 · 09/07/2012 14:54

Hi all, I agree that jewellery is impractical for the beach or pool. ujjayi I like the ideas if metallic details on other things, I'm a bit of a magpie and love a bit of bling but at the same time I don't want to look silly. I love accessories but agree that there is a time and a place for different ones.

Another reason I'm asking about jewellery on holiday is because I often see Spanish women wearing big <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.es/imgres?um=1&hl=es&sa=N&biw=1024&bih=506&tbm=isch&tbnid=8BH5hcgMnURd3M:&imgrefurl=www.whitefirejewelry.com/item-Cultured-Pearl-Earring-sku-WF00928.html&docid=tWBjO4TaC2hY6M&imgurl=www.whitefirejewelry.com/Cultured-Pearl-Earring-WF00928_medium.jpg&w=250&h=250&ei=Z-H6T464F4fV0QWCwunNDA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=642&vpy=112&dur=1100&hovh=200&hovw=200&tx=139&ty=71&sig=114413497939204179243&page=3&tbnh=142&tbnw=155&start=29&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:14,s:29,i:211" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">studs, gold thin bangles and a small gold chain around their neck when they're at the beach. I love people watching and observing what they're wearing but sometimes I can't decide if a particular look is awful or great.

I wear no jewellery no make up I think it looks odd a bit footballers wife. I think people look beautiful after a few days of sun with their bare faces

ujjayi · 09/07/2012 17:21

I don't like the idea of studs but what about something like this bracelet ? I think that kind of thing would look lovely against a tanned wrist and not totally impractical for beach/pool wear.

ujjayi · 09/07/2012 17:23

Noddy - I'm with you on the make up issue. I don't understand the lippy on the beach look at all.

MsOliveOyl · 09/07/2012 17:50

I go for no jewellery, waterproof mascara no make up, just a nice bikini and big sunglasses. Any jewellery worth wearing would just get ruined by all the salt/sand/suntan lotion, surely?

MsOliveOyl · 09/07/2012 17:51

By 'worth wearing' I mean that you actually like, whether it cost £2 or £2000.

Bunbaker · 09/07/2012 18:05

Wouldn't jewellery give you unwanted tan lines? I don't get why anyone would want to clog up their pores wear make-up when lounging around by the pool or on the beach either. Surely it is better to let your skin breathe and protect it with a bit of sunscreen.

fionadeb · 09/07/2012 20:50

Jewellery is great day and night, I'd go for something subtle during the day ( unless you are attending a beach party ! ) and bling it up for the evening. Have a look at this website they have some fantastic pieces and also amazing bargains !! www.trinketsjewellery.com ( free shipping too)
