Help me stop saving my clothes for 'best'.....

I have a terrible habit of never wearing most of my clothes as I am saving them for better days/best. The thing is I am a stay at home mum of a 5yr old and an 10 month old baby so never really go anywhere other than school, supermarket and coffee/lunch dates so 'best' never comes around.

I end up wearing the same few things over and over, I have some lovely day dresses that make me feel good but I just think whats then point. I see other mums at school and think they look nice and in reality I have the same things sat in my wardrobe at home!!

Talk some sense into me please.

Germy - yes her blog always makes me laugh - she always looks v. stylish! (believe she is a MNetter too)

My new motto is "Life's too short" and "you can't take it with you" - no point holding onto things for special events. Every day is a gift and if wearing something sparkly or bright makes you happy why not? (I might sound a bit happy clappy but I know people who have had health scares recently and it has made me reassess my outlook on certain things)

I friend cleared out her mother's wardrobe after her death. It was full of unworn items that had the tags still on Confused

I do this I have loads of nice dresses I would love to wear but would feel too dressed up. I live in a hot country though so can't add denim jacket etc to make them look more casual or even shoes/tights/boots etc
What could I do to wear them but make them look ok on school run or just going about??

frankie4 · 07/07/2012 16:18

10987 - how about a denim waistcoat. Or if it is a plain dress then wear a big patterned scarf with it.

i am exactly the same, i have tons of lovely clothes .....saving for best.....but the best never comes, or when it does i buy something else.....madness...need to change NOW !!

I'm so bad I keep things in the bag so that they stay even newer than putting them on a hanger.

Ii was joking to the dcs that because of the rain and not being able to do any washing, they'll all have to wear their oldest, most outgrown clothes. I, on the other hand, will end up looking tremendous as I am forced to wear my "new" tops (would something I bought in 2006 be out of date by now...?).

Oooh, I am bad for this!

DH gave me an eternity ring for our 10th wedding anniversary that he had designed himself with different coloured stones for different years - I was soooo pleased with it ... and he was therefore Confused when I promptly put it away "for best".

He absolutely insisted I have to wear it every day with my wedding ring. I do love it and I am pleased he insisted!

Thanks for this thread, will do better at trotting out my "good" clothes.

QueenCadbury · 08/07/2012 15:35

I'm still Confused.... Do you still have 'going out clothes'?

germyrabbit · 08/07/2012 15:48

well i have just been to the zara sale (again) and got two new things to put in the cupboard and gaze at occassionally Grin

ooer that reminds me dp bought me a lovely silver ring a couple of years ago and i don't hardly wear it as i don't want to lose it Hmm!

MissWooWoo · 09/07/2012 09:39

I am also guilty of this ... how do you get over the feeling that wearing your "best" stuff for school run/nipping to the shops isn't over doing it or Blush showing off?

DonaAna · 09/07/2012 09:55

Clothes have to be worn when they are still in style and you still fit into them.
I have a few party dresses that I save for parties (I go to them quite frequently), but all the rest is for everyday use. If you find that your closet is full of going out clothes and you only go out a couple of times a year, you'll ned to start wearing them and being extra mindful when you purchase new ones (do they fit your lifestyle - would you wear them today - if not, don't buy).

MadAboutHotChoc · 09/07/2012 15:48

I now wear my best clothes and do my nails when meeting friends for coffee or lunch, at weekends and only wear my old stuff when not doing anything at home (no longer do school runs).

I feel so much better about myself and my friends say it shows Smile
