Are bare legs a business dress no no

Work in a not too stuffy industry and reckon business dress has relaxed so much over the years - but when I wear a smart dress / jacket type combination for meetings I still feel I am breaking the rules if I go bare legged.
What do others do / think?

I would as I can never see the difference. I used to do this in an large accountancy firm in the middle of London....severely hot summers back then (at least on the train on the way in!) As long as the rest of you is smart, I see no problem. Having said that, a nice fake tan works well too....you could see the beacons of my pasty white legs from several miles away!

cacm · 01/07/2012 15:21

I would never go to work bare legged It just doesnt feel right to me.

emsyj · 01/07/2012 15:38

IMO flesh coloured micronets are the way forward for hot summers in the office - they won't make you sweaty. But if you must go bare-legged, it's really only okay if you have very lovely soft, tanned legs and a skirt that ends below the knee plus smart open-toed shoes with immaculate toenails.

valiumredhead · 01/07/2012 17:17

A member of my family is a real high fligher - regularly jets off to the other side of the world for meetings - light summer suits and bare legs when it is warm is what she wears.

justtryingtodomybest · 01/07/2012 18:46

I'm not a fan of bare legs with business dress - although it is fairly common in the office I work in. But that's maybe because I don't have the very lovely soft, tanned legs that emsyj suggests!

Rachog · 01/07/2012 19:11

Lots of bare legs in our office, we have gone fairly relaxed lately though.

Liveinthepresent · 01/07/2012 19:41

Interesting views- yes Rachog in office it's fairly casual. I still tend to dress smarter than a lot of others - and bare legs would be fine. It's just the client facing stuff where I don't want to get it wrong. I have some great work shoes that are peep toe and always add to the dilemma.

emsyj I like your criteria - I am ok on toenails and shoes - struggling a bit on the tanned legs currently ! ( though I have a couple of good fake tan products )

Will investigate micronets to add another option.

Hello!

I agree business dress has got much more relaxed in recent years. I now no longer own a suit, but opt for smart day dresses most of the time. If the dress is at the knee or below, I wouldn't hesitate to go bare legged - just make sure everything is well groomed

Just as a benchmark for you, I work in PR but my clients work in the construction industry - predominently male.

If you're unsure, keep a pair of tights or hold ups in your bag.

But you muct promise me to never ever wear any kind of hosiery with a peep toe. Or I shall have to disown you Shock

Fairyliz · 01/07/2012 20:27

Fine if you have even toned legs whether white or tanned. But if you have veins, patchy skin, bruises etc looks awful without tights. Think of them like foundation for your legs.

emsyj · 01/07/2012 21:18

When I was a student, I worked (with lots of other students) in the holidays at John Lewis. During high summer, they would put up a notice in the staff canteen saying 'Tights or stockings need not be worn in store today' - and we would all have a competition for the best (99% fake) leg tan!!! I have never bought or used so much fake tan as I did during those heady summers at JL! Grin

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 01/07/2012 21:30

I hardly ever wear tights in the summer now and use Sally Hansen on them instead, which is foundation for legs Smile.

valiumredhead · 01/07/2012 21:59

Is it good? Is it a spray or a cream and does it rub off on your sheets? Grin

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 01/07/2012 22:22

It's a spray Val I apply it with a mitt. It's Like a waterproof foundation and literally takes 2 mins to apply and dries in a couple of minutes so you can apply it in the morning. I find that it doesn't rub off, in fact I have to give my legs a good scrub in the bath to get it off. So your sheets would be fine Grin

Ok this is good rule gathering !
I promise I wont do the peep toe and tights combo Curryspice and your exmpe is good - I am in similar industry - meeting senior clients from public sector eg police.
But I am going to feel braver about bare legs - my Sister gave me a fab product for pale legs below

This summer is the first I've been brave enough to go bare legged at work, no one has said anything and I am a lot more comfy than in horrible tights. No fake tan but I have been using a lot more body lotion than usual.

By the way Boots do a lovely leg oil. No tan in it but it does give a lovely sheen. It's called Silky Leg Oil

Liveinthepresent · 03/07/2012 21:16

Sounds good curry went bare legged today and spent lots of the day spotting blemishes on my not very tanned legs :(. Need a holiday.

I work in a fairly traditional environment. I would never wear open toed shoes or bare legs. Ever.

ooer · 03/07/2012 21:32

I work in the public sector, but don't deal often with members of the public.

Plenty people go bare-legged here but I never would. I just think it's a bit scruffy. And speaking personally I usually feel more comfortable in tights with tailoring - can feel a bit sticky/ grubby without, and don't like the feel of bare feet in shoes either.

Interestingly, senior women in my workplace don't seem to go tightless (I'm not one!).
