Fascinators are they still fashionable?

flowwithit · 30/06/2012 09:58

I don't really like hats but I have a nice small black feathery Fascinator with small diamanté
I have long hair but I'm nearly 40. Are they too girly or out of fashion now. Do people still wear hats at weddings?

I suspect, Flowwithit, that a lot of people on here will say that they are not fashionable and that they are the devil's own headgear ( it's an S&B regular ) - however I go against the accepted S&B policy on this one, I think they can be very attractive, you just have to choose the right one for you, not just plonk half an ostrich on your head. Yours sounds fine.

cybbo · 30/06/2012 15:10

I think they are passé now and smack a bit of the 'ladies day' at the grand national

cherrypieplum · 30/06/2012 15:13

What is s and b?

BunnyLebowski · 30/06/2012 15:14

They're not and never have been fashionable. They're naff and dated imo.

You will look like a perfectly acceptably dressed wedding guest. But you won't look stylish.

EdithWeston · 30/06/2012 15:22

I wouldn't wear a black fascinator or hat to a wedding.

As to stylishness, it depends what it looks like. Some hats are simply dreadful, some fascinators are fine.

It's 'done-up' hair clips that will never be stylish.

valiumredhead · 30/06/2012 15:32

Lots of very glam ladies were wearing them to the races last weekend.

AnnaMosity · 30/06/2012 15:46

No. No. No. No. No.

Itsgottabebags · 30/06/2012 15:55

Were they ever fashionable? Having said that if you like it wear it.

BackforGood · 30/06/2012 16:00

I don't really like them myself, but I've been to 2 weddings so far this year.
At the one, ( a third wedding for the bride, who has grown up dc - don't know if this makes a difference to the effort the guests go to ? Grin) there were no hats at all, and about 1/2 the ladies were wearing fascinators.

The other one was a bit more traditional (long white dress, chaps in hired suits and cravats) and both Mums of bride and groom and 1 sister of groom and one very elderly looking lady (Gran I'm presuming) wore hats. Probably 80% of the other ladies wore either a fascinator or a big, oversized flower, or a tiny pillbox type hat on a headband or some other kind of decorated headband.

So, from my complete survey Wink , you'll be appropriately dressed in a fascinator this season Smile

BackforGood · 30/06/2012 16:01

CherryPiePlum - 'S&B' is 'Style and Beauty' (ie, the ladies on this thread who know what they are talking about Wink

Msarsebiscuit · 30/06/2012 17:28

I'm wearing an ENORMOUS pink fascinator and a pair of white linen trousers, swigging a Fruit Shoot while I scoff Pom Bears and cocking a giant snook at all you S&B naysayers and fascinator haterz.

And Bare Minerals is SHITE.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 30/06/2012 17:30

Bare Minerals is shite.

But so are fascinators. They are the kind of thing shrieking women who drink white zinfandel wear.

Msarsebiscuit · 30/06/2012 17:35

I did warn you, OP, fascinator discussions - the sartorial equivalent of saying you're a big Gary Glitter fan.

AnnaMosity · 30/06/2012 18:54

Agreed abd obsess about shoes while being the size of a Sherman tank

FairPhyllis · 30/06/2012 21:49

Yes, Bare Minerals is shite.

I think fascinators can be OK if they are fairly substantial and follow the contour of your head. The problem is that many of them are super cheap and look it - like a bird's nest has been plonked on the head. I think hats are usually much better value for money and it is harder to get them wrong.

If you have long hair it will draw the eye down and make the fascinator look sticky-outy (that's a technical term Grin) so I suggest wearing your hair up if you do go with it.

emsyj · 30/06/2012 23:27

The ONLY stylish fascinators are made by Pearls & Swine - here. If I had balls, I would wear them. Most likely this spectacularly gross so-awful-it's-fabulous creation! (NB The cream is not part of it, disappointingly).

ENormaSnob · 01/07/2012 01:14

Very dated IMO.

yellowraincoat · 01/07/2012 01:23

emsyj, get me that peacock fascinator, NOW.

Fascinators - naff. Always have been, always will be.

They're what women who go "hiyaaaaa, how aaaare yoooooou?" wear.

FairPhyllis · 01/07/2012 06:25

emsyj, those are frickin' awesome I would wear the Stella Maris one.

flowwithit · 01/07/2012 09:49

Oh dear they are much more hated than I imagined! Hmm I think I might look for a hat instead then.

OP posts:
EdithWeston · 01/07/2012 09:54

Have the best of both - get a substantial fascinator (which looks as if it's a small hat) to get the advantages of anchorage by headband but without the drawback of it looking as if something random has landed in your hair (the problem with most clips, except possibly some flower ones).

flowwithit · 01/07/2012 09:59

Ok sounds good where should I look? Budget version of Duchess Catherine type one pls Smile

OP posts:
MrsSeanBean · 01/07/2012 18:23

This sort of thing is ok IMHO as it's more 'hat like'.

EdithWeston · 02/07/2012 07:52

Or something like this?
