I have got afro hair. I grew up in a white family in a very rural part of the country where even now 99.9% of people are white so I have no idea how or what to do with my own hair let alone my DD's.

She hasn't got afro hair but that said it is curly. Not tight curls but loose I guess is how you would describe them. Up until recently she's had beautiful hair, the sort where you could have it curly or blowdry it straight. Now it just seems to be frizzy no matter what you do with it.

I don't think it's frizzy because it's dry as she does get greasy hair (I guess down to her age).

I need to know what she can put in it that will tame the frizz but without making it greasy. DD is really upset about it at the moment and has been called names on the school bus Sad

I'm not a hairdresser but a couple of things for you to ponder and check out with a proper hairdresser if you wish

There is a brand of Argan oil that also has keratin protein in it which might help with the frizz - if she used that on wet hair and then blow dried with a diffuser in a smoothing motion it might be enough to tame it a bit so its not actually wirey/frizzy but just curly

You can do the keratin kits (aka Brazillian Blowdry) - you can get them on Amazon for £25, I've used them, and recommend them, I have no idea if they are "suitable" for a 12 year old but its easy enough to do at home if you help her with it, and its not a straightening treatment as such, but it is amazing for sleekifying effect and lasts about 3 months if you use a salt free shampoo afterwards (like Tresseme Naturals)

Someone with frizzy hair or a hairdresser will be along in a while to help hopefully, but there's food for thought in the meantime...

Thanks. I use Morroccan Oil Intense Curl Cream which is a little too greasy for DD but I'll definitely check out other products for DD.

DD's hair isn't wirey just flyaway and frizzy. We need something to put in it to define the curls (I think). DD's hair dryer doesn't have a diffuser so we need to think about getting one if that would help.

Will have a look at the keratin kits on Amazon (wonder if it would work on my hair also??). Smile

My DD has mixed race hair, I only wash it 1-2 times a week using a gentle shampoo and conditioner (tresemme naturals).

I put a few drops of matrix biolage oil on while its damp and then leave to dry on its own. I find that the more I fiddle with it the frizzer it gets.

Inbetween washes I spray it daily with a water/conditioner mix and detangle with a tangle teaser brush. If it feels a bit dried out I use a few drops of the oil again.

KellyKapowski · 27/06/2012 16:43

Also I probably wouldn't use the keratin kit on a 12 year old.

They are great, I did one on my own hair last year but it did produce some nasty fumes during application that made my throat feel a bit weird.

Has your DD had a trim recently? it might be split ends that are causing the frizz especially since you say her hair used to be manageable.

DunkyWhorey · 27/06/2012 16:48

They are fumey the old keratin kits. Might be a bit hard core for a 12 year old. But then again we used to send them down t'mines. Nah. Best try something else first!!!

Of course curly girl! I knew there was something else to try. AKA the "no poo" method (no shampoo). Google should answer questions but someone will come along (Otchyanine?)

DD has hair similar to this (half Cypriot) We never brush it except when wet and has conditioner in it - in between washes we use wet fingers. Never use hair dryers as she ends up as a big ball of fluff. Frizz Ease type stuff is okay in DDs hair, but tbh I find using a small amount of heavy conditioner (one of the tub ones that's really thick, like a hair mask iyswim) on her hair when it's towel dried and then not rinsing works better. I like the 'no poo' method, but DD is only 8 and still has a habit of pushing her hair back with grubby hands (crisps are the worst...) so I think she needs to use shampoo still.

mampam · 27/06/2012 22:07

Thanks guys. As DD is going through puberty and is prone to getting greasy hair I'm not sure 'no poo' will work but will google it anyway.

We have a 'Tangle Teaser' brush so will encourage her to only brush her hair when wet and has conditioner in it.

And yes she has regular haircuts so I don't think the problem is split ends. I think it's changed since puberty has kicked in as we've never had the problem before.
