Best foundation for god awful spotty skin?

Doesn't look like my prescribed retinol cream will have miraculously cleared my skin in time for bro's wedding a week on Friday (at which I have to be fabulous). I so don't want to be fabulous-but-shame-about-her-skin...

Every foundation I've ever had gets crusty around spots actually making them look worse. I tend to use tinted moisturiser and a ton of concealer instead. I fear I need better coverage for this 'do'. Can anyone recommend a foundation that:

Lasts
Covers without crusts
Doesn't block pores and make it even worse
Looks like I'm just a radiant beauty who doesn't wear fondation...

I figure I'll try to get a sample just for the day cos I don't want to buy a whole tube of something I'll rarely use. Thanks in advance.

Clinique stay matt oil free make up with the stay matt powder x

LittlePandaBear · 26/06/2012 21:39

I need the same thing!

I bought a Clarins Everlasting one recently but despite getting a sample I'm not overly keen. Think I got a shade a little too pale and it smells funny too.

I got a Dior teint idole 24 sample which was okay, but I didn't think it was 'the one'.

I think I may try a Bobbi brown one as they have good reviews and a good range of colours I think!

Maybe someone else can help us out.

I have a similar prob. Would suggest you do what you normally do, and add a dusting of mineral powder. Carry your concealer and powder with you to touch up once or twice throughout the day (easy enough to quietly nip off to the loo). I think when you have bad skin like I do, to cover it up enough requires a too made up look which I don't pull off well at all. Better off doing what you're comfortable with and add a light layer of powder.

Estee Lauder Double wear light. Really, really good.

Mombojombo · 26/06/2012 21:53

I find powder doesn't help the crust issue as it seems to just gather atop or beside a carbuncle! I am basically happy with the way I do it now, it's just that a slight sweat, face-grab from DS, dab with a tissue or napkin and I'm all undone and look like a dirty scallywag....

I even tried 'fixing' my makeup with hairspray a couple of times! Didn't work & got in my mouth... If there are any such 'fixing' products I'd love to be introduced!

Second double wear. Covers really well and lasts all day.

wolvesdidit · 26/06/2012 22:23

double wear - I have acne, oily skin, wrinkles and a large scar and double wear is the ONLY foundation I have ever used ( and I wear it daily) that I don't need a concealer with.

spanishring · 26/06/2012 22:32

Mombo mineral makeup is not like traditional powders- they don't contain talc which is what causes the crusty collecting around spots.

Estée Lauder double wear will def cover - its like emulsion paint. As another poster suggested I think if you want something non pore blocking try minerals over your usual concealer. With the right brush and technique mineral makeup will give you the best cover and without feeling heavy. It's so good for spotty skin.
Try Lily Lolo or Youngblood - both excellent brands

Dior primer and Dior Forever foundation.

I have hideous skin, always have had. I wanted to look good for my wedding day last year and so tried the Dior and my skin was flawless all day! I didn't re-touch once and the photos just before the wedding were as good as the ones at the end of the garden party...

In fact I left my make up on all night (naughty girl) and when I looked in the mirror in the morning I was pretty impressed to see it all still in place Shock

Well worth a go, I also recommend their skin flash for under eyes. God I wish I could replenish my Dior but nowhere sells it where I live now.

Mombojombo · 27/06/2012 08:01

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! I have some mineral foundation (admittedly prob not the best, it's from bodyshop) and even with a good brush and the right technique still found it a bit clumpy.

I think I'll go and mooch round John Lewis to see What freebies I can muster!

If you are going to John Lewis, try bare minerals but the matte version. Their matte version is free of irritants and really should keep you flawless all day (and non-oily). Very good coverage too. Don't get their brushes to apply with as they are very scratchy. If you already use body shop, their ones are the softest.

Bobbi brown oil free fluid? Not sure whether it would work for you coverage wise as its quite light.

Hth

I don't have the budget for Dior or Estee Lauder but have been using Boots 17 Miracle Matte foundation lately and it does a really good job of covering my awful skin.

valiumredhead · 27/06/2012 12:28

Bare MInerals and Bisque concealor.

valiumredhead · 27/06/2012 12:28

YY the matt version! If you ask they will give you a sample pot to take home.

After a little jaunce today I've come home with samples of EL Double Wear and Bare Minerals (matte version). On sales pitch and amount of free stuff alone, Bare Minerals wins the prize! Got 2 pots of foundation, samples of primer, cleanser & moisturiser, plus the girl on the counter did a lovely touch up job on my face after DS had a proper grabbing/scratching session!

I think the colour she recommended may be a fraction too dark though, so tomorrow I'm going to do half my face in Bare Minerals and half in Double Wear and will see which looks and lasts better.

I've never dared let anyone else do my makeup before (I really do hate my skin, am terribly ashamed of it and have a - probably unreasonable - paranoia that they'll question my personal hygiene) but actually quite enjoyed it, so thank you for your suggestions again.

Clinique Stay Matte compact powder is the best I've found to help keep foundation in place. (I use EL Doublewear Light as a base)
