Dr Martens Boots- Too aggressiive for a 10 year old?

My niece who I look after L is 10.
She wants a pair of Dr Marten women's Boots as linked below.
www.cloggs.co.uk/invt/81048501
because apparently they are really popular in her school, with the older girls. I am undecided about the idea, because I think they are quire aggressive looking boots and not really suitable for a 10 year old, although she has pointed out these ones are very girly.

I also don't want to bend over to every playground fad, because with 2 other kids, my husband and I don't really have the cash to fund every new craze.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

fatboyslimmum · 26/06/2012 10:29

plyus v v expensive at 10 when their feet are growing vv quickly

MarianForrester · 26/06/2012 10:30

I think they are lovely Smile Would be happy if my ten year old wanted them. Not aggressive at all.

goingtoofast · 26/06/2012 10:31

My daughter has just turned 11 and is on her second pair. They don't look agressive.

Those ones are very expensive!

mejon · 26/06/2012 10:31

Well I have no problem with girls wearing DMs and those are pretty girly - but I would have a problem with paying £100 for a pair of boots for a 10 year old. Not really the right time of year to be buying boots either I'd have thought.

bigTillyMint · 26/06/2012 10:32

The only thing that puts me off is the price-tag - DD has been told she can have some if she buys them out of her own moneyWink

Are they for school? If it's a non-uniform school or one which hasn't managed to make the uniform compulsory you might be alright, but I'd be inclined to check first.

TheOneWithTheHair · 26/06/2012 10:32

I don't think those ones are aggressive. Dd had patent ones with rainbow stitching when she was two and I am wearing dm biker boots right now so I'd say that depending on which pair you choose they can be for any age.

As for giving in to a school fad, does she need new boots? If she does then I can see no harm in indulging her as long as you make it clear she may not get her way every time. And let's face it, she won't wear them out. Dms last forever!

malovitt · 26/06/2012 10:33

They're fine for a 10 year old, but I would point her towards the darker coloured 'girly' ones as she will probably get more wear out of them. The white ones are nice but are a bit overpowering I think. I have some that are 25 years old that I still wear so she will get her (your) money's worth. All the girls are wearing them around here.

peeriebear · 26/06/2012 10:36

DD1 had a black pair a couple of years ago and didn't get to wear them much so I am waiting eagerly for them to fit DD2. They are durable, comfortable, waterproof, sturdy... Not aggressive though! Confused

TheRhubarb · 26/06/2012 10:38

I wear original DM boots, not aggressive at all. Attitudes have changed now and you don't get skinheads with tartan trousers and DMs threatening to kick your head in anymore. The DM has been reclaimed and is now a funky fashion item.

The good thing about them is that they are incredibly hard wearing. I've had mine for 18 months now and they are still in good condition. Just polish them every month to keep them in shape.

It doesn't really matter that her feet are still growing either, even if she only gets 6 months wear out of them, so long as she's kept them in good condition you can get more than half your money back by selling them on ebay. Even the used ones are going for around £50 depending on their condition.

I'm more cynical about them being suitable school shoes though. They wouldn't be allowed at our school, the kids have to wear shoes not boots. Plus it is summer so they will get heavy and sweaty for her. I would do her a deal and promise to buy her some for September. But check it out with the school first as kids come home will all sorts of stories about what other kids are wearing but usually it's a gross exaggeration.

AlmostAHipster · 26/06/2012 10:41

They're gorgeous. For school, I've always got my girl DM Mary Jane shoes as they look trendy and last forever.

scentednappyhag · 26/06/2012 10:41

My sister and I were always in DMs my dad used to take us to a factory outlet in a little village, and we'd get three pairs there for the price of one in a normal shop- try googling to find one, as £100 is a fair whack for boots for a 10 year old Envy

peeriebear · 26/06/2012 10:42

It is always worth checking out larger branches of TK Maxx as they sometimes have random colours of DMs in for waaaaaaay cheaper than full RRP.

Queen0fFlamingEverything · 26/06/2012 10:48

My 4/5/6yo used to wear DMs so no, not aggressive at all. But not new £££ white ones. Look on Ebay!

TheRhubarb · 26/06/2012 10:56

Same boots for £80 new on ebay

Ormiriathomimus · 26/06/2012 11:01

No. Not at all. But bloody expensive. I got some from the factory shop for my DC when they were small. DD's were purple with ladybirds on them Grin But they only cost about £25. If I had to pay full price I'd have said no!

Not aggressive, but for school are they smart enough? When we were in the last year it was still school uniform but I wore a floor length skirt and hid dm boots underneath but at 17 my feet weren't going to grow anymore and I got them as my birthday present and it was just for a month until holidays. I would have to g

Dolallytats · 26/06/2012 15:42

They are cool, but the price tagShock!! I have a pair of DM's buried in the back of the wardrobe but I don't have the guts to break them in....that hurts!!! It was ok at 17/18....at 38 I just want comfy feet...........Oh, I think I have become my mumShockBlush:(!!!

ProcrastinatingPumpkin · 26/06/2012 15:46

I got a pair of DM's for my 11th birthday. Luckily my feet haven't grown since and I am still wearing them now - 22 years later! So I you are lucky they could turn out to be the longest lasting, most economical shines you ever buy Smile

Ephiny · 26/06/2012 15:46

They look the least 'aggressive' boots I've ever seen - they're white with little flowers all over! I'm not entirely sure how shoes can be aggressive anyway Confused.

They are expensive for a 10 year old though! Would she get enough wear out of them to justify the price?

Dropdeadfred · 26/06/2012 15:48

Not aggressive at all!!!

ProcrastinatingPumpkin · 26/06/2012 15:49
