having recently been given full time hours at work I have decided to start my wardrobe from scratch as my clothes are so old and worn. I am also losing weight so not necessarily wanting to buy a lot in one go but if you were to start a wardrobe from scratch what would you suggest? I don't need work clothes and don't have any children yet so just looking for comfy, casual but smart weekend clothes

How about starting off with a couple of pairs of well fitting jeans? perhaps a dark indigo and a black pair, skinnies or straight leg. They will be good for summer, rolled up and worn with sandals or winter with boots, or with converse type trainers. Then you can get some tshirts, neutral colours and perhaps some breton stripes which can be dressed up or down with scarves or chunky necklaces. H and m are great for tops that are decent quality but ded cheap. Go for longer ones so you won't feel too exposed in skinny jeans. Then maybe a blazer jacket in a neutral colour? I am looking for a lightweight short but fitted trench coat at the moment but have had no luck (wrong time of year!) but if you can find one I think that would look good. Then perhaps as we move into autumn, a denim skirt to wear with chunky jumpers, long sleeved t-shirts etc.

Also you can brighten things up with some scarves (just go for colours and patterns that you like) and some more interesting tops. Oasis and warehouse are good and there are sales on at the mo. Uniqlo is also good for plain tops and knitwear, though some of their sizing is a bit odd.
Not sure if that's at all helpful (probably not the most adventurous dresser, me!) but possibly a good starting point xx

It's a bit tricky - you'll need staples but you don't want to buy them over again if you drop sizes, that would get boring quickly.

My advice would be to experiment first and try a few styles at a lower price point - new colours in Primark for example, then when you're more focussed on your style and your size is stable or moving stably, start to pick up the wardrobe essentials.

For the few investment pieces you may have in mind, there's no harm getting something good and having it adjusted by a local tailor - sounds like a trip to top off with a hot chocolate + muffin combo!

Mewkins have given you a good list. I think she's also been nosing in my wardrobe as this is almost exactly what I wear myself day to day Grin
Having dropped 1-2 dress sizes myself in the last 12 months, I know the problem of clothes ending up too big and then having to rebuy in a smaller size. Agree with others not to spend too much until you reach a comfortable weight.
Next do lots of skinny / slim jeans in varying cuts and sizes that are not too expensive.
Breton type tops are everywhere - H&M, Zara, M&S, Gap etc...
Also some vests and T's would be good.
Topshop also have some nice open front blazers in at the moment.
How about a pair of leather sandals for summer to wear with them? Lots of sales on at the moment.
I also wear a lot of tea dresses when I fancy a change from jeans - Topshop, New Look, M&S Limited Collection, Warehouse all do nice ones.
Come the Autumn, you can think about a coat - a trench as suggested - or a parka style coat? - Warehouse, Boden, Lands End, Next all do them at differing prices to suit your budget. Also a pair of heeled ankle boots or a pair of flat knee high boots would be a good investment for colder weather.
