I can't afford posh face cream anymore

Since my 20's I've always used good face cream - not super pricey but always Lancome, Clarins, Caudalie etc. Its always been my little bit of luxury. Good face cream and a good handbag! But now that i only work part time and have two kids I'm finding it harder to justify spending £100 pounds every few months on day cream, night cream, eye cream and serums etc from 'the counters'. So I've tried a couple of supermarket brands but it's just not the same is it!? Olay was like thick slop that smelt of old ladies. Nivea Visage smells good but is too rich and has caused a few pimples.
Any recommendations please - I'm in my very late 30's, olive skin which is dry in the winter, but more oily in the summer. I get about 5 minutes sleep a night and look like I've aged about a hundred years since I had kids so I need anti-wrinkle stuff.
And what about the cheaper organic ranges you can get in health food shops like Weleda or Green People? any of them worth a try?

The best I have used is the Aldi day/night creams as good as some posh creams and better than others.

DollysDrawers · 23/06/2012 20:52

I was going to start a thread about this too! Everyone on here seems to use expensive creams like Elemis etc and I just can't afford it. Currently using Olay 2 in 1 day serum and cream which was on special offer and I find it surprisingly good!

Gigondas · 23/06/2012 20:55

Body shop has surprisingly nice cleansers (not sure about face cream) and body oils. Hold out quite well against dr huashka , caudalie types.

Also avena is ok - ok not dirt cheap but in inde chemist. Also have heard good things about no 7.

babster · 23/06/2012 20:55

I normally use Boots Protect and Perfect, but just started trying Garnier UltraLift from the product test. E45 cream is very cheap and has got me through some hard winters!

chullah · 23/06/2012 20:56

I am in exactly the same situation as you - and 3 years on am still swapping creams in search of a decent one - the best do far has been Nivea but not the original stuff, the new botanic or organic one - cant recall the name but pick it up in the supermarket each fortnight for a fiver.

Good luck -they are worth it most of the time Wink

tryingtonotfeckup · 23/06/2012 20:56

Boots No7 stuff, the serum and day & night creams in the nice boxes.

mummyinspain · 23/06/2012 20:57

Hey just a thought have you tried the cosmetic shop at the discount out lets? YOu can normally pick stuff up there at about 50% off. So that expensive cream may be a possibilty?

Not sure if that helps at all!

MrsSeanBean · 23/06/2012 20:58

Nivea Pure and Natural is good - see here

GobblersKnob · 23/06/2012 20:59

I have started using Body Shop Naturalift stuff and it is amazing. I you google Body Shop there are always codes too, so you can get it quite cheaply. If you go into Body shop they will give you samples too, I got samples of the moisturiser before I invested as I have quite sensitive skin.

I used Clinique and Clarins for years, but stopped when I had kids and less money, have since used lots of organic stuff from Green People and also done the oil cleansing method, but am really happy with this range and will stick with it, my skin is much smoother and brighter.

PartialToACupOfMilo · 23/06/2012 21:00

The Olay in a tube - radiance something, but not the tinted one - is really lovely and about £7 a go. I only use it in the morning after washing face with nivea face wash, but since I started doing this (quite a long time ago now) my skin's been lovely.

Oh and every so often I buy a tube of liz earle hot cloth cleanser because I love the smell, but I find apricot scrub every couple of weeks gets better results.

Veggy · 23/06/2012 21:00

Wow that was quick. I guess that's the beauty of the football being on, it's so boring I just can't look at the screen and there's only so much littering around I can take.
Ok so good things to try. I guess it's going to trial and error. I will miss the beauty counters though. And picking my 5 trial sizes. ahhh sigh!

Exactly the same situation as me! I seem to have settled on Boots No 7. DD's eczema cream (Diprobase) is a great moisturiser too. When I am really skint I mix it with sunscreen for the day and use it plain at night.

wonkylegs · 23/06/2012 21:07

I've been using Garnier youthful radiance at the moment. Feels light enough, not greasy but deals with my dry skin. Smells nice.

KittieCat · 23/06/2012 21:07

I know the craze was ages ago but I use Waitrose baby bottom butter at night and it leaves my skin feeling lovely. Once a week I also use sweet almond oil with a couple of drops of jasmine and frankincense oil in it ( as recommended by lovely Elemis beautician).

Still not found a day cream to replace my fave Elemis one though...

TheKnackeredChef · 23/06/2012 21:08

Another vote for the Aldi stuff. Honestly, it's fab. It's about £2 a pot, smells lovely, feels lovely. Wish I'd discovered it years ago.

ceeveebee · 23/06/2012 21:08

I've changed from Clinique to boots no 7 beautiful skin and so far it seems to be fine.

chullah · 23/06/2012 21:11

Pure and Natural - that's the one !!

Spookey80 · 23/06/2012 21:13

Olay 7 signs, after research on mn. The one with the SPF in it. It's good.

BetterChoicesChair · 23/06/2012 21:15

I switched from Clarins to Boots #7. I actually like it better and my skin sounds quite similar to yours. There is a gel moisture (non-comedogenic) for combination skin that is excellent. Garnier does a similar one that is a bit richer which I use for nighttime and I buy Kirkland eye cream from Costco. It's fantastic and lasts me about 2 years! Absolutely no way am I paying $30 for a teeny-tiny tube of eye cream. George Banks says NO!

MarianForrester · 23/06/2012 21:19

I use Akamuti organic stuff. I have dry skin and am in forties. I am pleased with it, and my skin looks and feels a lot better since using it.
It smells nice too: real scents rather than fake ones.

QuinnFabray · 23/06/2012 21:25

I buy sample sizes from eBay. Elemis, Clinique and Clarins stuff is generally quite a lot cheaper on eBay.

CakeBump · 23/06/2012 21:28

The aldi ones are great, or Olay, or Nivea.

They're all same shit, different jar imho....

2to3 · 23/06/2012 21:29

Body shop vitamin E intensive is very good and smells lovely.

TheSpokenNerd · 23/06/2012 21:29

Wait till' your SO on the bones of your arse that you have to "share" the family's olive oil for your face.

One splash for the salad and one for my face.
