Anyone else finding it tough to know how to dress/style hair. Shortly after 40 it didn't seem so bad as could still get away with a lot. But now when I go shopping I'm constantly questioning myself about if an outfit is 'mutton'.
Ive still got a good shape - small in height and size 8, but think my face has aged badly recently (probably hormones). Have shoulder length blonde hair, which is highlighted but doesnt really have any Grey. Still have young
kids so mix with a wide age range of mums.
So what style tips would you give me or does anything go if you have the confidence to pull it off?
So what do you think looks good

I am 50,also size 8 with young kids. My hair is highlighted and cut in a Graduated bob, a bit like this

GeorginaWorsley · 23/06/2012 16:59

I have started to buy bits from the mid to higher end high street tops,eg Whistles,All Saints,Mint Velvet,Phase Eight,as well as brands like Sandwich,Noa Noa etc from local boutiques as opposed to mainstream NewLook,TopShop, etc.
I also tend to stick to classic colours like navy, cream, taupe, tan etc.
I like scarves a la the lady on the 'does my bum look 40' blog and find them in Primark,Autograph,Warehouse, local smaller shops.
I have just below shoulder length layered brunette hair with caramel lowlights.
I also always wear make up,foundation usually Clinique or Estee Lauder,Nars blusher,Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner, and am never without a lipstick or Clinique chubby stick.

HTH,am 45 btw

googlenut · 23/06/2012 18:52

Yes I think the key is to go classic and use colour well. I use Clinique foundation but it's such a pain to put make up on every day - but cant go without or skin looks blotchy.
Was so much easier when it was quick to get ready and not too much effort to look decent.

Today im wearing white converse, black leggings and a light grey dress with tiny white skulls on it. I have my hair in a Louise Brooks bob at the moment. Im 43.

The word mutton means nothing to me Grin

MittzbethSalander · 23/06/2012 19:22

I am 43 soon and wear whatever I like Grin

My hair needs a cut but is generally very short and choppy and whatever colour I feel like on the moment.

I love Skinnies and Leggings with Tunics, dresses.

Make up, also always wear foundation but again, whatever I feel like.
I am mildly aare that some stuff would make me look ridiculous but not much Grin

I'm 42.

Casual 'uniform' tends to consist of dark blue or black skinnies (M&S or Oasis usually), a top of some sort (Warehouse, White Company, M&S or Hobbs usually), leather jacket (Oasis), scarf (H&M, Warehouse) OR maxi skirt (Topshop, Gap), ballet flats (Clarks) or heeled ankle boots (Dune). I like Vivienne Westwood too, and jersey dresses from The White Company.

noddyholder · 23/06/2012 20:13

I am 46. Have what MN would consider long hair Kate moss style wavy and no grey yet! I am wearing black leggings a white gap linen tunic top black flat knee boots. I nearly always wear mascara but have had botox a few times and can go without make up sometimes. I think classic colours is good too I hate too bright or revealing. I live in jeans though and love good shoes and a nice bag.Unstructured dresses like noa noa with footless tights and ballet pumps to.I also refuse to acknowledge mutton dom

greyvix · 23/06/2012 21:04

I am older than any of the previous posters i.e. early 50s. I like classic clothes, particularly for work. PS Whistles Sale has started and some of it is 50% off!
I also like White Stuff for comfortable, casual clothes, though some of it is a bit little girly, which is a look to avoid in my opinion!

I am 43. I think the key is to buy simple quality things. Not mumsy but I just can't seem to get away with the bohemian look of my youth - start to look a bit hippy social worker (sorry to social workers by YKWIM!). Less frills and mixing it all together, more classic.

At the mo skinnies, and tunic top, or with posh t-shirt and jacket. I do like converse still but boots or wedges are good. I like some white stuff, phase eight have some nice bits lately.

Interesting thread. I'm just 50 and I've lost my way completely somewhat with fashion and style in the last few years since I got divorced. We often see newly divorced women lose lots of weight, get a fab new haircut, and a gorgeous fresh sense of style but I was the complete opposite and lost all interest in myself buying only from M&S and now looking at their stuff more objectively, I really don't like much of it!
Anyway, I'm slowly losing weight and looking with interest at finding my own style direction. I've been looking at upping the quality of my clothes so the brand suggestions here are helpful.

I am completely grey and have been since my late 30's. I colour my hair every 5 weeks. My hair style is quite short, but I'm thinking of going shorter. I'm also looking at finding a new hairdresser. I've been happy with mine but the salon is very expensive so I may try somewhere else. And then return to my current stylist with my tail between my legs. Smile

I do wear make up- at least mascara, lip gloss, blusher every day, and most days I wear foundation and eye liner too.

janmoomoo · 24/06/2012 17:07

If you need a boost, the best thing I did was go and get my colours done. Totally helps you to pull your wardrobe together. Lots of existing threads on that elsewhere.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/06/2012 17:13

I wear make up most days - a bit of foundation, blusher and mascara at least. Lancome mascara is good - I prefer Definicils to the hugely popular Hypnose. And I like Benetint for blusher. Any recs for a decent foundation now I can no longer afford Bare Minerals?

higgle · 24/06/2012 18:43

I'm 55 and actually have better skin now than when I was younger - a few wrinkles under my eyes and a couple of crows feet but a glowing complexion - I was always a bit pale and spotty in my younger years. I go for "interesting " makes, Toast, Whistles, a bit of vintage, things from the young designer's place in Park Street, Bristol. I know classics are supposed to be good but I find them very boring. What doesn't work is anything that has come round again in fashion a bit quickly - like 80's stuff. I always wear makeup but not very much and usually this includes a nudish lip gloss.

I try to keep my hair brownish ( with high and lowlights to minimise grey) and understated - I think anything that shouts "hairstyle" is rather ageing.

The one thing I find really difficult is shoes - flat styles really don't suit me if I'm in a skirt as I'm short. I need comfortable shoes because my feet are a bit worn out and it is really hard to find shoes that are not a total give away on this front. On the whole I wear what I like, which sometimes includes short skirts and I don't understand the work "mutton".

Aliceinthelookingglass · 24/06/2012 19:28

I think you have to go with what is fashionable but toned down a bit.

I'm far from adventurous with clothes but think I look okay-ish. I spend a lot on make up- qualty stuff but use every bit and don't replace until it's used up. Hair is longer these days but just touching shoulders. Sort of layered shaggy bob. I use make up every day- but subtle. Do my nails- nude polish- and try to look groomed with some simple jewellery- funky and chunky rather than classic.

I tend to wear a mix from White Company, White Stuff, Boden, Jigsaw, Mint velvet.

I avoid anything mumsy like Kalico, Alexon, etc etc.
